Is it wrong to like a different college for another sport...

phew, glad I made it with your final requirement of five years

i never said that it was a requirement. i just a have a hard time accepting those fans. there are many levels of fans: gameday fans; bandwagon fans; guilted fans; fans by marriage; solid but not ravenous fans; and scarlet bleeding, michigan hating, carmen ohio memorizing, buckeye necklace wearing, last saturday of november wedding skipping/quick appearance/pocket radio/pocket tv fans. those who post here regularly -- but who weren't raised in ohio or attended/graduated from osu -- would likely trump my unofficial rundown of buckeye fan qualifications. almost necessarily, however, i would check the id of any fan who hasn't been a fan of ohio state for more than five years. i'd still welcome the fan, but the invitation into the circle would take more time. the national championship made it too easy for bandwagon jumpers.

the ONLY way I would root for another team is if it helped my pool. otherwise, no way.

i think that there's quite a difference between rooting for a team and being a fan of a team. i root for teams all the time. it's hard to watch any game and not root for a team. however, rooting for, say, michigan state to beat penn state does not mean that i'm a fan of msu -- at least not beyond the game.

so, what if tOSU and Kentucky square off in the championship game in Bball?

You got me good!

In that case, Kentucky. And if OSU won in that case, I'd be happy for them (because there is a place in my heart for both schools) but as a fan, I'd be devastated.

I guess you all are more holy than I.

The irony is, I'd be less of a "true fan" if I'd answered 'OSU' to that question. I'm 25 years old. Do you think I would (or should) throw away over half of my life to date of rooting for one of my favorite teams just to pass this fallacious litmus test?

Would you say I'm less of a fan than somebody who roots for OSU in all sports, but does stuff like planning their wedding for the day of The Game? How about the ones who sell their tickets to fans of the opponent? What about all those people who booed Justin Zwick and Ryan Hamby?

as i mentioned a previous message, and sorry for appearing sanctimonious, i think that there certainly are different levels of fans. those so-called fans who have booed zwick and hamby, and certainly those who hatemailed hamby, are not true fans in my book. in fact, i'd just as soon trade those fans to michigan for a few peanut shells, a nickel, and desmond howard. i have no issue with fans who sell tickets to opponents. now if the fan selling the tickets chooses the michigan fan over a buckeye fan, then i have a problem. fans who plans weddings on the day of the game... well, generally they're females who do that. the fiances have little pull there.

I was born in Syracuse, New York, where one side of my family is and where i lived for around 9 years. My dad grew up in Pickerington, Ohio (just outside of Columbus for those who don't know). So as a result, I ended up being a fan of both teams, by birth and family, and want each to win. I just always was a huge Ohio State fan for football because i grew up watching them with my dad. But by time basketball season came around, i was so much more exposed to Syracuse basketball and am a big fan of them. I guess you could say that im a bigger OSU fan in football, and a bigger Syracuse fan in basketball. But ive been the same way for 16 years (my life) and if Syracuse ever played Ohio State in the NCAA tourny, I would have to root for Syracuse to win. Same for Ohio State if they played in football. I see nothing wrong with being loyal to both teams because i have been the same way my entire life, and personally, dont really care if you disagree with me because i know for myself that i am not, and never will become what i hate the most : a bandwagon fan.

whoa! chill bro. I was just asking. I have been a fan of tOSU since I can remember. I never had the option of picking another team in a different sport. I was born and raised 'bout a half hour from the 'shoe.

booing tOSU players in any sport is not an option for me.

Anyway GO BUCKS! (in every sport, game, debate club, bar fight, pissing contest)

I visited Duke when I was younger and attended a golf school there. I have always respected their basketball program and root for them to win unless they play a big ten team. Does not make me less of an OSU fan.

I would also root for scUM in three conditions: Playing Notre Dame, playing any team from Florida, Bowl Game. Once again not making me less of an OSU fan.

I was born and raised inn Gahanna just 15 mins from the Shoe, and have been going to all the home basketball games since I was 7 and all the football games since I was 10. That would be 16 years of basketball and 13 years of football.

There is nothing wrong with liking another team, as long as you root for OSU when they play them

so you never root for the big ten to win bowl games? If we were the only ones to win every year, it would end up hurting us. The same is true for the tourney... the Big Ten would get even less respect if we didn't consistently have teams that go deep into the playoffs.

I think you need to distinguish between a two-headed fan (who cheers for another program in another sport) and someone who is a one school guy but roots for another when their team is gone.

Deety did not start following OSU until recently, but clearly she is an obsessed fan, and a lady at that, who posts constantly about OSU.

Are there fans who jump on the bandwagon? Sure, but its not for us to determine that fans have to follow OSU closely for a long time before they are worthy.

There are different varieties of fans. That doesn't make the non-obsessed or newer ones unworthy.

I never said any fan was unworthy. I simply stated that I was an OSU fan no matter what. The pool thing was kind of tounge-in-cheek, should've used a smiley. I don't give a rats ass when a person started rooting for a team. I never attended tOSU. But my love of the university is without question.

I always root for big ten teams in bowls. I live in GA, so fuck off sec, acc, big least.

bingo. except that I think if you start to be a fan of a certain team, you should stick with them. Liking a new team the next season because they are better is unexceptable.
