Is it wrong to like a different college for another sport...

Captain Hindsight

The Hero of the Modern Age
A question that always lingers in my head is:

Is it wrong to like another college for another sport?

It pisses me off to no end, when other people like other colleges. Like, for instance when people like Ohio State for football and then some other team for NCAA Basketball.

OSU's always #1, but I like UNC basketball, primarily because of Vince Carter and Julius Peppers. I see nothing wrong with it. It's always been harder to follow OSU bball because they don't get as much TV time as a school like UNC would.

no offense to anyone else, but i have a hard time accepting those who are fans of, say, a school's basketball team but another school's football team. most such fans are just bandwagon jumpers. barring any reason such as the one bucknut offered (even though that reason leaves me suspicious), i don't see how such a fan could be a true fan of either school. sure, the person may be a fan of the team -- but not a fan of the school.

i also have a hard time accepting fans who aren't students or graduates of the team for which they root, weren't raised in or don't live in the area where the team is located, or haven't been a fan of the team for more than five or so years. most duke fans fail the first two of my qualifications, while the third qualification carries the least weight. the easier it is to be a fan of the team, the less likely i am to respect the fan. many would say that being a fan of ohio state football is too easy; our program is among the winningest. that is the case; however, i am also a huge fan of the basketball team, and no one can claim buckeye basketball superiority... yet.

we'll have our shot very, very soon.

edit: so, yes, bcsbust, i agree with you. any fan who is a trojan, dookie, patriot, and yankee needs to be shot.

err...

weren't raised in or don't live in the area where the team is located,
umm...

or haven't been a fan of the team for more than five or so years.
uh-oh.

Eh, phooey on you. I'm staying.

I'm drawn to the tradition of the school, which translates to all sports, not just the one that became familiar first. I haven't really followed the other OSU sports very closely - yet - but always want to see Buckeye teams come out on top.

Yes, it's wrong.

what makes me even more mad are people who say, My favorite team is team A, but I also like team B (team A's biggest rival).

that shit don't fly with me. or people who "love" a certain team, but wear another teams logo, because they "like the hat/ shirt/ jacket"

phew, glad I made it with your final requirement of five years :rolleyes... there was a time when I hadn't followed OSU for more than 5 years, then again that was when my age was in months. nobody has figured out how I came to become a buckeye fan, including myself.

I'm OSU first in all sports. However, I was raised by spartan parents, and we root for each other's team. Then add in the fact that OSU is rarely in the postseason, and I become a pretty strong MSU bball fan (since they go quite deep in the tourney most of the time). Plus I think Izzo is a fantastic person and coach.

Man, I wish I didn't have to keep weighing in on this topic every six months or so.

I've been a fan of both Ohio State and Kentucky ever since I can remember. I've stuck with both of them through tough times (fuck you, Tai Streets and Christian Laettner), but I've also been fortunate that there's been plenty of good times for both as well (thank you, Craig Krenzel and Jeff Sheppard).

Growing up in the Dayton-Springfield area, there are plenty of Kentucky transplants and plenty of UK fans here (especially in my hometown). It's just the way I grew up. When it came time for me to choose a college, I narrowed my choices to those two schools (and eventually went to OSU).

I don't see it as a "split allegiance". If you want to call it that, then so be it. I know where I stand. I know I'm a better fan of either one of those two than most people I know are for the one and only college they root for.

so, what if tOSU and Kentucky square off in the championship game in Bball?

First of all, I assume you mean liking another team in b-ball (or some other sport) as your FAVORITE team, right? I root for a few other teams, but never as my favorite team. That's always the Bucks. However, the 'other' teams that I root for change from football to basketball, and most of the time it depends on the coach.

i see nothing wrong with it as long as the person has been rooting for the teams for most of his/her life, has family and personal ties to each area of the schools they root for, and is consistent with what they say season in and season out. If you like Ohio State for football and then some other team in a different conference that doesnt even play them, for example, Arizona, for basketball, i see no problem as long as you dont flip flop around, or have no ties to either school/area, and support each school in everything they do, just like to watch one more in one season and another in another season.
