iPhone/iPad App Recommendations & Reviews

This is pretty awesome:

http://blog.forecast.io/post/46290267206/announcing-forecast

We?re extremely excited to announce the launch of Forecast, a new global weather service.

About a year ago, we released a little app for the iPhone and iPad called Dark Sky, attempting to do something new and interesting for weather forecasting, a field we think had become pretty stagnant. Approaching 100k sales, it?s been fairly successful; however, we?ve been continually asked for more: international support, longer-term forecasting, an Android app, and so on.

Rather than cram these things into Dark Sky, we decided to do something grander: create our own full-featured weather service from scratch, complete with 7-day forecasts that cover the whole world, beautiful weather visualizations, and a time machine for exploring the weather in the past and far future. You can access it from all of your devices, whether it be your laptop, iPhone, Android phone, or tablet.

CONT...

So many iOS weather apps out there and they all seem to be competing to either see how ugly they can make it or how little actual weather information they can make it impart. This is the opposite of all of those... full-featured, free, looks good, and all in a web app that's compatible with any device. Brilliant.

How did you get it? Went to forecast.io and it says to "tap the icon below to Add to Home Screen", but there is no icon.

Edit: Never mind, I was in Chrome and needed to do it through Safari. Not enough coffee this morning

Been a while since I've done a roundup of good apps... here goes:

Google Drive (FREE, universal): If you need to view/edit documents on the go, this is the way to go. I use it to keep spreadsheets to track my music collection. When I go into a record store and come across a good used CD, I can check to see if I already bought it before so I don't end up with duplicates. They just updated it so you can edit/type in landscape mode on the iPhone.

MLB At The Ballpark (FREE, iPhone): Updated for 2013, not only does it allow you to check-in and track your MLB ballpark visits, it now allows you to manually enter games you've attended back to 2005. Since I'm the kind that saves every single ticket stub, I got them out and entered as many as I could. It was interesting to see all of that info compiled in one place within the app.

Thomson Reuters (FREE, universal): Finally, a news apps that doesn't bog down with social bullshit and that doesn't have stories about Kardashians and Lohans in their "top stories". Just the top stories from around the world in a clean, simple format.

Starbucks (FREE, iPhone): I don't even drink coffee. I downloaded this yesterday because they are supplementing their free "Pick of the Week" program by giving away apps, songs, and other iTunes content thru the app. This is in addition to the cards that they give out in their stores.

Little Inferno HD ($4.99, universal): Made (in-part) by the makers of World of Goo, Little Inferno is part game, part anti-game and part interactive storybook. The object is that you have a "toy" fireplace, and your character sits in front of it all day and orders various items to burn in it. The items all have different effects when you set them on fire, and different combos produce compounded effects and help you advance the plot. I found it very entertaining and I think these developers do quality work and deserve to be paid the higher price that they charge for this game compared to most. There is also a "pocket" version that is iPhone-only for a lower price. I bought it early when the HD version was iPad only, and was delighted when they made that one universal.

Wordament (FREE, iPhone): Perhaps familiar to those of you with Xbox Live, this one was new to me and I was quickly addicted to it. It's basically an MMO version of Boggle. Quite fun.

Math QuizUp (FREE, iPhone): Everybody has been making word games for the last couple years. The fact that this is a math game that borrows all of the best features from many of the leading iPhone word games makes it stand out. You have to create a profile or log in thru Facebook, but once that is established you can play against matched opponents on timed math quizzes against people around the world.

Today Weather ($0.99, universal): The App Store is lousy with weather apps, and most of them fall into one of two categories - ugly and cluttered with lots of info, or slick and good looking with virtually no info. Today Weather strikes the best possible balance between both. It's visually pleasing, but has the extended forecasts, hourly forecasts and radar that I demand.

CARROT ($0.99, iPhone): The closest thing you can get right now to turning your iPhone into GLaDOS from Portal and Portal 2. It is a to-do list with a really cool system of virtual punishments/rewards that also allows you to unlock features by "leveling-up". It has kept me coming back and has got me to actually use my to-do list more than I otherwise would.

Time Warner Cable to Offer Live Mobile TV for Apple Devices
By Alex Sherman - Apr 16, 2013 3:27 PM ET

Time Warner Cable Inc., the second- largest U.S. cable operator, is adding live out-of-home programming for the first time to its TWC TV application, letting customers watch shows on Apple Inc. (AAPL) mobile devices.

Time Warner Cable will make as many as 11 live national news, sports and entertainment channels available outside the home starting at 10 a.m. New York time tomorrow, according to Maureen Huff, a company spokeswoman. They include the Big Ten Network, the Pac-12 Network, TV Guide Network and BBC America. In addition, customers will have access to some local channels, including NY1 for New Yorkers. The programming will be available for Apple?s iPad, iPad Mini, iPhone and iPod Touch.

CONT...

Up until now, you had to be on your home's TWC wi-fi network to watch live TV thru these apps. Now it's TV everywhere for this small handful of channels. Don't know that this changes much for people since TWC customers already had access to the same feed thru the BTN 2Go app, but it's nice to see the network at the front of a change like this for a large carrier. As a user of both the TWC app and the BTN app, I'll probably switch to start watching thru the TWC app since I don't have to enter my login info ever damn time I try to use it.

An update on my adventures in jailbreaking...

One of the earlier paid tweaks that I had gone for was Auxo. Seemed really useful at first. Little by little I found other tweaks that did each of its best features a little bit better. It also turned out to be an unstable battery killer. My battery drains at half the speed now that I have gotten rid of it. I guess having your phone constantly save and discard screenshots for those multitasking "cards" kinda uses the processor a lot. Go figure. The most important feature was the easy way I could use it to kill all apps in the tray. I replaced it with SwipeAway though which does the job elegantly as well.

I ended up buying Zephyr. At first I though this tweak was creating the problems that I was having with Auxo. This tweak allows you do do advanced multitasking gestures - with more options and better responsiveness than Activator. It's kinda pricey, but I wouldn't want to go without it. It started working much better once Auxo was gone too. Two features that I used all the time - the one-finger swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the tray, and a three-finger pinch to close an app.

I use my phone as an alarm clock. It's a habit that I picked up almost a decade ago when I was on call as a substitute teacher. One of the pitfalls of doing that is if your ringer volume is down, you can miss hearing your alarm and then you're fucked. Alarming overrides the volume for the rest of the device, allows you to set the alarm volume to "high" (or whatever you want) and it will always go off at that level regardless of how the ringer volume is otherwise adjusted.

I just started using FolderEnhancer so I can keep more items in folders and reduce the number of home screen pages I have to use. I had stayed away from this initially because all of the screenshots made it look ugly, and I can't stand ugly on my phone. Turned out the look is fairly customizable, and I was able to make it fit in (but not match) with the translucent gray that I have employed in my lockscreen and notification center overlays.

Jukebox is a notification center widget that allows you to see and control whatever music you're playing. It looks like stock and is very functional and responsive. The best features - it displays album art and it's compatible with virtually any music player including the stock iPod app, Spotify, Rdio, etc. It has a "share" button where you can easily tweet your currently playing song. It also has a setting I love that will hide the widget when you kill the app that's playing music, so it's out of the way when it's not in use.

Tap to Widgets is another notification center widget that gives you quick-compose access to apps such as Twitter, Facebook, Notes, Calendar and Reminders. Stock iOS has the widgets for Twitter and Facebook, but this tweak is nice because adds the others and gives you more options for how they appear in the notification center. If you use all five you can have them side-by-side in one row rather than having five items stacked vertically and taking up more screen space. I really only use the Twitter and Calendar ones, but it's nice to have them right next to each other and the quick compose for calendars is especially nice - much easier than entering an event thru the Calendar app itself.

A couple screenshots showing the notification center widgets and FolderEnhancer:

For people who use Picasa Web Albums...

Best Album - an app that gives you access to view/edit your photo albums from you iOS device has gone on sale - it's now FREE. It's a universal app, full-featured, it looks sharp and has worked flawlessly for me for a couple years. I've tried a bunch of 'em - this one's the best.

Noticed today while picking up a coffee that the Starbucks app currently has a key for free redemption on Angry Birds Star Wars. Valid through June.

I had read that they were expanding their Pick of the Week program to the app. I guess they are not doing a new promo ever week like they do with the cards in their stores. Still though, more free stuff. A lot of times with apps I pick up the card and redeem it just in case I find a future use for it.

This is key for all "free" for the day deals...

I really don't come across too many apps that are exclusive to the iPad. The only one I can think of that I use on a regular basis is Notability - an app that allows you to use your iPad as a notepad. I like it because it allows me to write with a stylus rather than type. I've tried several other apps that do the same thing, and this one is one of the better ones.

There are plenty of apps though that while available on the iPhone too, they benefit from the larger screen and longer battery life of the iPad. That's certainly the case for anything that streams video like Netflix, WatchESPN, etc.

Magazines are another area where the iPad excels. Some are exclusive to iPad, some are on all iOS devices. Sports Illustrated is much better on my iPad than on my iPhone.
