iPhone/iPad App Recommendations & Reviews

For people who will be losing Siri functionality when they gimp it for legacy iPhones:

http://appshopper.com/blog/2011/10/...re-vlingo-goes-free-before-iphone-4s-release/

Vlingo, a company that develops a competing voice-centric personal assistant app for the iPhone and other smartphone platforms, has made full functionality within its own app free. Using Vlingo to create text messages and emails by voice used to cost $6.99 each, or $9.99 for both services when purchased at once, via in-app purchase. Vlingo?s offerings aren?t as comprehensive as Siri Assistant in iOS 5 will be but it works on older iOS devices, unlike Siri Assistant in iOS 5 that will only work on the iPhone 4S.

Some more cool apps that have come out in the last few days:

Scribblenauts Remix: Apparently this game was ported from Nintendo DS and is fairly popular. This was the first I'd heard of it. It's clearly geared toward kids and looks kinda crude on the larger screen of an iPad, but it's still fun as hell. You solve puzzles by summoning just about anything you imagine. Just type it in, and it shows up in the game and can be used by the character. I haven't been able to stump it yet. You can ask for just about anything that isn't a proper noun, copyrighted or inappropriate. The puzzles are fairly easy, but the fun is in using your imagination to come up with more creative solutions. $5, universal.

iTunes Movie Trailers: I don't actually give a shit about movie trailers. However, it also happens to be the simplest, slickest movie times app out there. I got rid of Flixster when I downloaded this. Free, universal.

AccuWeather: not a new app, just a cool new function. It now has calendar integration, which if you set the AccuWeather app to allow, will add the daily forecast as an all-day event on your iOS calendar. I normally check my work calendar as I head out the door each morning to see what I'm up against, and it's nice to have some basic weather information right there. I only have the iPhone version of this app (I prefer WeatherBug on the iPad) but it shows up in my calendar on both devices. Free, iPhone & iPad.

For any musicians/pianists out there, Moog Music Inc has released Animoog for the iPad.

http://moogmusic.com/products/apps/animoog

Animoog is a "anisotropic" synth that can generate most of the tones the Moog product family has been famous for since the late 60s -- sounds popularized by the legendary prog acts of the day (Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, ELP, Genesis, etc). What makes this really incredible is the multitouch capability where you can 'visually' shape the sound by directly manipulating the oscilloscope. This is a really, really incredible app.

So, if you want to pretend you're Rick Wakeman, Richard Wright or Keith Emerson or somebody check it out. Includes MIDI in/out. The retail price of the app is $30 (which puts it in the established price class of other "professional" iPad audio tools such as the Korg iMS-20). However, for 30 days only, Animoog is being priced at $1. Don't miss it.

I don't think I'll ever be a musician again, and I'm not really a prog rock fan either. However, I do appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into a top-notch app. I also appreciate the history and craftsmanship of Moog synthesizers. For a buck, I'll buy the app just to play around with it. It seems like a work of art in its own right.

Also Dryden, do you listen to the Sound Opinions podcast? Maybe it's all stuff you already knew or have heard before, but a while back they did an entire show on the history and legacy of the Moog that I thought was very interesting.

I've downloaded a bunch of music/synth apps for my pad, like SoundPrism Pro, MorphWiz, Seline HD, GarageBand. Animoog is just on another level. It's not just the sounds, but the additive record/loop and being able to change tones without tethering the Pad to a MIDI controller or Mac running Logic Pro that takes this to another level. This isn't like any other app I've seen. This is more akin to old-school tracking on an Amiga without the archaic input plotting or having to rip samples from other sources.

It's incredibly simple to explore and play. My kids will have a blast playing with this. If this were an actual Moog-factory instrument, it would cost thousands and thousands of dollars. Instead it's currently $.99. Crazy.

Having played with it now, I'm honestly surprised they've priced this at just $29.99 after the introductory period ends. It's that good.

Nope. Can't say I've ever heard of it.

It's currently the #1 paid iPad app in the US store. I'd say it has caught on just a bit.

Well, it's an hour-long public radio show based in Chicago. Their episode with the Moog retrospective is archived here: http://www.soundopinions.org/shownotes/2010/102210/shownotes.html

EDIT: [strike]And of course, it's unusable. Instant crash.[/strike] Works after unininstalling & reinstalling the app.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/10/the-ipad-gets-a-facebook-app-finally/

The folks at FB also added that some of the newly released features will be integrated into the iPhone app as well,

Picked up the iPhone 4S Friday, and the first app I installed was Facebook. I really am inpressed with it...far better than the FB app I had on my Blackberry Storm. The Check-In function works light-years better than the Blackberry's (which didn't work at all at times).

File under: It's about time.

Mint.com iPad app "will be out very shortly"

A while ago I wrote about four websites that need iPad apps: Facebook, Mint, LinkedIn, and Google Docs. Facebook stepped up to the plate, and now an official Mint.com rep has confirmed publicly what two Mint employees had told me in private a while ago: the Mint.com iPad app is coming soon.

In a tweet posted October 11th, Mint mobile designer Jaanus Kase said "the @mint iPad app is nearly done and will be out very shortly." He followed that up three days later with a posting on Mint's satisfaction forums which states that the next Mint app will be universal (both for iPhone and iPad) and that it will require iOS 5, which is one of the reasons the company could not release it before now.

Also, for those of you with iPhone 3G units, the new Mint app will not work since the maximum iOS on that device is 4.2.1. However, Kase states that Mint will continue to support its current iOS app for those running iOS 4.

Anyone with a Smart Cover Can Break into Your iPad 2

We've confirmed the security flaw with our own Smart Covers and iPad 2s running iOS 5 and it's just like the video above?the bug easily exposes your iPad 2 to unwanted eyes. And though you have to jump through a few hoops to get there, it works like this:
? Lock a passcode enabled iPad 2
? Hold down power button until it reaches the shutoff slider screen
? Close Smart Cover
? Open Smart Cover
? Click cancel

...

I don't know how anyone would've figured that out but it definitely works. Going through those steps exposes an iPad 2's entire home screen and apps (you can delete them but can't open any apps) and even Spotlight previews. Perhaps more damning is that if you have an app open before you lock it (like Mail or Messages), the user who broke into your iPad 2 will have full access to that app (and can see and send messages, etc.). The smart cover break in is limited, yes, but could be used maliciously to peep e-mails that weren't supposed to be peeped.
The only way to fix this bug is to disable Smart Cover unlocking in the General settings menu.
