At the end of the first half they got a first down around the 30 yard-line with 6 seconds to play and no timeouts left. No problem - the first down stops the clock temporarily, you just need to have the team line up and spike the ball within 5 seconds of the refs having it ready for play after the chains are moved, and then kick the FG as the last play of the half.

Sparty had half of the FG team and what looked like an assistant trainer run onto the field as the refs were spotting the ball. Then when the clock was started they tried to fix it by screaming at the FG unit to get off the field, but with 1 second to go they had the offense lined up and no QB on the field to spike the ball! The clock ran out without the ball being snapped. Dantonio was asked about it by the sideline reporter seconds later, and he wasn't happy. Too bad he didn't have a memorable quote like John L.'s "The coaches are screwing it up", because that's what happened.

If the FG holder was the QB, or they might have gotten the ball spiked in time. But it was obvious that they needed to spike the ball, rather than rush the FG unit on, they had the first down by a clear margin. Well, it was obvious to everybody except Sparty's coaches, I guess.
