Iowa 24, Georgia Tech 14 (final) Orange Bowl

So, it turns out that playing actual defense and having talent in the trenches really is a recipe for success. Who knew?

In all seriousness though, this game really did resemble the Rose Bowl (although I'd say Iowa probably had a better defensive performance than we did, if only slightly), Capitol One Bowl, and Champs Sports Bowl. All four of these games were simply flashy teams getting their asses beat by big, ugly Big Ten linemen who ground out victory like an inexorable phalanx of bulldozers. It brings a tear to my eye, it does.

Agreed on on parts. Except that I have never used phalanx in a sentence until now...and that's only to say that I haven't used it

That's a nice stat.

Great stat, great effort, But it is admittedly different to practice and scheme for a month against a team with an unusual offense versus having to play them with a week or less practice in season (the ACC has a bunch of those non-Saturday games). If Tech played Iowa a week after Iowa played tOSU, the stats might be different. Iowa would likely still have won, but not as dominantly.

I readily admit that the Hawkeyes are a very well coached and disciplined team, and that they execute the fundamentals and keep to their assignments as well as any program in the Country. Keeping your assignments and winning individual battles on the edge blocking is where you win or lose with Tech. When Iowa loses it is not because of lack of effort or conditioning, but (usually) because of having less talented athletes than their opponent. I have nothing but respect for Iowa, having played them several times recently, lost once and damn near the second time.

I am a BIG fan of Ferentz.

Ended up going to this game at the last minute. Friend called me about 7pm and had two extra tix. Went and picked up my son and headed down to the stadium.

We had great seats, first row upper deck around the 5 yard line on the GT endzone side. We were smack in the middle of the Iowa faithful, and I had my Buckeye gear on (yes, I am that guy. :)) Everyone was high fiving me, saying great job in the Rose Bowl, go Big Ten (but not the SEC! SEC! SEC! type of conference tea bagging), and whatnot. Really cool fans.

Anyway, it was cold for South Florida standards, but brought me back to my days in C-bus going to The 'Shoe for games in late October and November. Great time.

One thing I found funny, the stadium had no coffee ( at least in the upper deck) and they stopped selling hot chocolate just after halftime because beer sales were lagging. That is South Florida mentality for ya, cold beer for a cold night.

About the game. I was really impressed with Iowa's D and how they stayed in their lanes to stymie the triple option. They played it near perfect, key the QB, outside containment to force the play inside, and good side to side flow of the LBs. GT looked lost after their third series, and with out a passing threat were pretty much dead in the water.

Good game to go to at the last minute! :wink2:

No, Iowa would not have won at all had it been back then, because Stanzi was out and they were trying to get by with Vandenberg (is the Mandenberg).

Iowa would've been obliterated by GT if this game had been two months ago. On the plus side, we would've gotten a lot of long TV shots of Vandenberg's mom. Total MILF.

I disagree. OSU provided a precedence that the time between the games to switch offenses doesn't matter.

OSU played a triple option, then immediatly to a pro form, then to a spread, then to a spread option.

On all 4 games, the defense played incredibly well. Iowa was ready to play and stayed disciplined. As long as the discipline is there to stay on your assignment, you can easily prepare for it in a week. Iowa's offense didn't change.

Now it's hard to prove this as well, because I guarantee if they played again in a week, the score and outcome could be different. But it won't be due to preparedness.
