That's a very good record, but I wonder if that is where they were rated at the time of the game, or where they ended up. I tend to put a lot more weight on where they ended up. USC beating Auburn like they did at the beginning of the 2003 season was only impressive for a week, same with our win over Washington. I'm sure the records are similar, considering Coach Tressel's overall record, but I wonder if it would be better or worse based on final standings.

Tressel is a big game coach. Period. 3 Bowl wins, 2 BCS wins, 1 NC game win. 3 wins against scUM-scUM was top 10 all 3 times I believe. Washington State-top 10, NC State-top 20, huge game both times. Whatever it is that he does, Tressel is able to get the Buckeyes firing on all cylinders when the spotlight is on. The real key-and something that has not happened in the regular season during his tenure, due to scheduling-is how the Bucks will respond to Iowa, the week after the Texas game. I cannot remember 2 games of this importance in back to back weeks over the last 4 years. I am not counting the last 4 games of the NC season-those games became big as the season progressed-not just jumping out on the schedule.

Exactly.

My favorite example is from the late 90s, when UCLA "upset #3 Alabama" in September, and that win was referred to repeatedly in the media as a "great" win by the Bruins when justifying UCLA's ranking during the year.

Alabama finished 3-8, so how "great" was that win?

It doesn't happen this year either. San Diego State is after the Texas game.
