Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

i think you'll see a rotation of carmona, westbrook, masterson, sowers, then any combination of huff, laffey, carasco.

it's a total shame that adam miller's finger fell off. he'd make this rotation look semi-respectable.

That would be my guess as well. I think this is the first year in as long as can remember that they don't bring in a bargain-bin retread.
Carmona, Westbrook are the locks. I think Sowers has to fight, but wins a spot in the end. Masterson probably gets in, but I'm still not convinced his future isn't middle relief. Same with Laffey. I think that leaves out Huff and Carrasco. Huff is what he is, I don't know that there's anymore development there. Carrasco was a mess after getting the call. He didi show some electric stuff, he just needs to learn how to work. Probably best for more AAA time.

Problem is, none of those guys are close to an "ace". Hopefully Rondon is the real deal. Gomez has some promise as well and both could be ready at some point next summer. Knapp and Hagadone are a ways off, but are both promising if their health holds out.
I don't understand why you two guys are so high on Sowers. There really baffles me especially over Huff. I can see Laffey in middle relief and the same is true with Masterson but I would also take either one of those guys over Sowers when it comes to a starting role. Really, Sours has not shown me anything on a semi-consistent basis:tongue2:

I'm not high on Sowers at all, he's just one of the few options. Huff showed me little to seperate himself from Sowers. He has better stuff, but lacks the mental makeup to take advantage of that. Maybe it gets fixed this winter.

I'd love nothing more than to be rid of Sowers once and for all, but I don't see it happening. There's a lot of question marks and a lot of young pitchers. Maybe somebody beats him out.

Not high on Sowers... just a reflection of how bad our pitching will be next year. Really... none of these guys should be starting pitchers on opening day.

But Sowers would be great opening day, pitch him 5 innings where he is all-world than yank him before he gets to the mound in the 6th inning

O, before I forget, I would not mind having Bobby Valentine as the next manager of the Cleveland Indians. I think he could relate well to both our younger guys and JP (forget Hafner) not to mention the fact that he would bring an attitude to the team which has been sorely lacking.

A friend of mine, yes I do have one:wink2:, comment on the ex-Indians that were in the playoffs when they began and he came up with the number 17. Don't have the complete breakdown but that number seems to be about right.

Saw 10 names listed in Cleveland.com over the weekend that might be possible managerial candidates and none of that really turned me on. I say name Bobby Valentine the manager and call it a day. We should be so lucky.

There's gonna be competition for Valentine from teams that will offer more money (Washington) or have a more attractive roster (Florida). Doubt we get him.

I cant wait to see what treasures are snagged in free agency this year

im guessing the usual

Utility IF
mediocre veteran OFer (in the Michaels/Deullcci mold)
mediocre veteran starter
a few crappy relievers (ala Mike Gosling Vinnie Chulk)

two things:

1. they probably aren't going to sign any FA's this year due to payroll issues.

2. eric wedge isn't there to promote his "grinders" mantra which leads to FA signings like jason michaels, david delucci, and any number of bullpen scrubs.

Mattingly says that he might be interested in managing a baseball team. Cleveland or Houston or maybe just stay in Los Angeles. I guess we can find out next week now that the Dodgers are done.

Cleveland Indians morning news roundup: Former batting champ Don Mattingly wants to manage; could be for the Indians

The Cleveland Indians hoped to be in the news at this time of autumn by playing in the American League Championship Series.

Instead, after a failed season, baseball people have the Indians on radar as the team searches for a manager to replace the fired Eric Wedge.

Los Angeles Dodgers batting coach and former New York Yankees star first baseman Don Mattingly as believed to be one of the contenders for Cleveland's managerial job. The Dodgers trail the Philadelphia Phillies, three games to one, in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series, and for all we know, the Indians might interview Mattingly today, an off day in the NLCS.

it's widely thought that mattingly is being groomed to take over the Dodgers when Torre hangs it up after next season. While he may have interviewed, I really wonder how viable a candidate he really is.

I was thinking about that when I was making my post. I don't think I want the manager from Columbus because he really doesn't have that much experience and from what I have read about Valentine is that he knows nothing about the current Indians and very little about our Division. In addition to the fact, he may want some major dollars to sign the contract. So to summarize, I guess that would leave us with the ex-Nationals manager if Mattingly does not want to sign a multi-year contract if he is interested.
