Winter Haven, Fla. -- The Indians and Winter Haven were a marriage of convenience from the start. In 1993, after nearly 50 years in Arizona, the Indians were bound for a brand new spring-training site in Homestead, Fla., until Hurricane Andrew shattered the ballpark and their plans.
And after 27 springs, the Red Sox had just bolted Winter Haven for a snazzy new place in Fort Myers.

Cleveland Indians Insider: Josh Barfield, Scott Elarton sent to Buffalo

Winter Haven, Fla. -- It's Tom Mastny and Craig Breslow for the last spot in the bullpen following several roster moves by the Indians after a 7-5 victory over the Yankees on Tuesday.
Jorge Julio will make the bullpen and Scott Elarton was reassigned to Class AAA Buffalo. In other moves, left-hander Aaron Fultz was officially designated for assignment and second baseman Josh Barfield was optioned to Buffalo.
The Indians purchased Julio's contract and added him to the 40-man roster. The former Baltimore closer came to camp as a spring-training invitee. He has a 1.64 ERA in nine appearances this spring.

Winter haven, Fla. -- Ryan Garko knows it never works.
You tell yourself, "Don't think about it . . ."
No matter what it happens to be, it doesn't take long until that's all you think about -- especially when you are sweating out the final cut of spring training, as Garko was doing with the Indians a year ago.
He remembers lying in his bed, staring at the ceiling. Over and over, his mind whirled: What if they really keep two utility infielders instead one? What if they go with an extra pitcher? What if I go back to Buffalo . . . again?
Back to Class AAA for a third year at the age of 26? Am I forever stuck in Buffalo?

Cleveland Indians bullpen taking shape as Elarton heads to Buffalo

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. -- The Indians bullpen situation is down to two relievers -- Tom Mastny and newcomer Craig Breslow.

Goodyear, Ariz. -- After 16 seasons in Winter Haven, Fla., spring training in the desert will be an adjustment for the Indians and their fans.

Cactuses instead of palm trees. Scorpions, not gators. The clock a few hours behind.
In reality, the move is a homecoming, because the Indians and Arizona go way back -- back to just after World War II. Colorful Indians owner Bill Veeck moved spring training from Florida to Tucson, where he owned a ranch, and persuaded his buddy with the old New York Giants to do the same.

Indians' Julio, Breslow likely earn final two roster spots

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. The Indians made a series of roster moves Tuesday that all but cemented the final spots on the Opening Day roster.

Cleveland purchased the contract of right-hander Jorge Julio from Triple-A Buffalo and designated left-hander Aaron Fultz for assignment. Julio and left-hander Craig Breslow, claimed on waivers from Boston on Sunday, will likely take the two open jobs in the Indians bullpen.

Is it just me or does it seem like the Tribe has a lot of players that are running out of Minor League options? I really hope they can work some trades rather than letting any good young players walk just because they don't have room on the roster.

Wonder if they can predict the '03 Series winner too?

In their Transactions section, espn.com today lists the following deal as having taken place on Monday, March 24, 2008 by the Indians:

"Traded pitcher Brian Anderson to the Kansas City Royals for outfielder Trey Dyson, pitcher Kieran Mattison and cash."

Knowing this was not correct, a quick check proved that this was the August 25, 2003 trade made by the Tribe and Royals.

So, just what are they smokin' in Bristol these days?

Indians cut Francisco, keep Dellucci

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. The Indians made their final roster move of spring training this morning, optioning outfielder Ben Francisco to Triple-A Buffalo.

Francisco was cut despite having had an outstanding spring. He batted .362 with a .404 on-base percentage and .617 slugging percentage in 16 games. Six of his 17 hits (three doubles, three home runs) went for extra bases. His nine RBIs ranked fourth on the club.

The final cut was not made until it was determined outfielder David Dellucci was healthy enough for the Opening Day roster. Dellucci was sidelined March 16-23 with soreness in his left wrist and forearm. He was able to play nine innings Wednesday against Houston and singled, doubled and tripled in five at-bats.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. The 2008 Indians are now a team.

The competition for roster spots all but ended Wednesday morning when right-handed reliever Tom Mastny was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. That move clinched the final spots in the bullpen for right-hander Jorge Julio and newly acquired left-hander Craig Breslow.

"Everybody knows Julio has a great arm," Manager Eric Wedge said of the former Baltimore closer. "He has also pitched with consistency this spring. He has pitched himself into situations, but he's been able to get right back out of them.

INDIANS 7, ASTROS 6 C.C. Sabathia pitched seven strong innings and David Dellucci singled, doubled and tripled as the Indians (14-12-3) defeated Houston at Osceola County Stadium. Sabathia allowed three runs, striking out six without issuing a walk. He retired the last eight Astros he faced. CF Franklin Gutierrez triggered the play of the day, firing a rocket to Victor Martinez at home plate to gun down Lance Berkman. Martinez then completed the double play when he threw to first base, where Miguel Tejada had overrun the bag. Jensen Lewis allowed three runs in the eighth, but Rafael Perez pitched a perfect ninth.

Kissimmee, Fla. -- I'm a sucker for spring training.
I can watch Tribe second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera short hop tricky ground balls, coolly turn double plays and think, "This kid will win a Gold Glove one day."
I can smile as Grady Sizemore runs out every ball, even routine pop-ups, in these games because that's how Grady Sizemore plays.
I can see Cliff Lee throw five scoreless innings using three different pitches as he did Saturday and think, "Maybe he will win 15 games."

Insider: Gutierrez is the quiet star of Indians' spring

Kissimmee, Fla. -- It was four years ago at this Osceola County Stadium that Milton Bradley exploded and out of the rubble came Franklin Gutierrez.
Bradley didn't run out a pop-up, and manager Eric Wedge mentioned it. He was not happy.
Bradley was furious, believing he was being picked on. He stormed off the field, changed his clothes and took a cab ($64) back to the Tribe's spring base in Winter Haven, Fla.
He never wore a Tribe uniform again, as he was traded to the Dodgers for two players who became Andrew Brown and Gutierrez, the Tribe's starting right fielder.
