New York Yankees batter Cleveland Indians' chance to sweep

Friday, May 09, 2008Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
New York- The Indians haven't swept the Yankees in the Bronx in 19 years. They still haven't because Paul Byrd couldn't keep the ball in the confines of Yankee Stadium on Thursday.
The Indians took the first two games of the series on David Dellucci's three-run pinch hit homer off Joba Chamberlain and a superb pitching performance by Cliff Lee, Rafael Perez and Rafael Betancourt. They were poised for the sweep Thursday afternoon, but the Yankees hit four homers on the way to a 6-3 victory.
"Yankee Stadium is a tough place to play," said manager Eric Wedge, "but when you win the first two, you want to win the last one. We had our opportunities, it just didn't happen."

As Fausto Carmona's sinker fails, walks rising for Cleveland Indians pitcher

Friday, May 09, 2008
New York- Fausto Carmona's sinking fastball is going the wrong way.
"Instead of going down, it's going up," said Carmona.
Carmona's wayward sinker is the main reason he's walked 31 batters in seven starts over 39 2/3 innings this season. After his first seven starts last year, when Carmona's sinker was the hottest pitch going in the American League, he'd walked 13 in 49 1/3 innings.

Cleveland Indians have their share of memorable moments at New York's Yankee Stadium

Friday, May 09, 2008 Mike Peticca

Plain Dealer Reporter
Most of the Indians' best moments against the New York Yankees have been in Cleveland. The Tribe's storied doubleheader sweeps of the Bronx Bombers during the 1948 and 1954 seasons were in cavernous Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The dramatic Indians' wins in games 4 and 5 of the 1997 American League Division Series happened at Jacobs Field, now Progressive Field.
The Indians, though, have been part of some notable moments in the history of Yankee Stadium since "The House That Ruth Built" opened in 1923.
Aug. 27, 1938: Yankees pitcher Monte Pearson, a former Indian, tosses a no-hitter in a 13-0 rout of the Indians. It is the first no-hitter in Yankee Stadium.

Power surge zaps Cleveland
Slumping Yankees hit four home runs

AP BASEBALL WRITER

NEW YORK Jason Giambi and the sluggish New York Yankees suddenly turned sluggerish.

The Yankees played home run derby Thursday, with Giambi, Johnny Damon, Robinson Cano and Wilson Betemit connecting in a 6-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians that prevented a three-game sweep.

"There were big hits up and down the lineup," Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said.

A day after Damon called the Yankees' recent output "pitiful," a lineup missing injured Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada matched a season high for homers.

"I think we're going to be fine," Damon said.

Giambi, Cano and Betemit each began the day hitting well under .180. Damon has done better from the leadoff spot, and he homered for the Yankees' first run in the fourth inning and hit a go-ahead double in the fifth.

Figures the Pirates would trade for Michaels. Worst organization in baseball.
.
The Pirates only have to pay around $500,000 of his $2.2 mil contract so the Indians took a big bite on that one. $1.7 mil for two months of nothing is pretty bad for the Indians.

Still better than $2.2 million for 4 more months of watching him suck.
