Jhonny on the spot
Peralta's three-run homer is big blow in win over Yankees

CLEVELAND: All the parts meshed flawlessly, like the gear box in a Porsche 911 or one of Michael Symon's impromptu concoctions on the Food Network.
Paul Byrd hung on for dear life, holding the New York Yankees' offense within manageable bounds. The Indians' on-again, off-again attack put just enough of a hurt on Andy Pettitte to forge a lead.
Then there was the bullpen.

Cleveland Indians' long balls go a long way in beating Yankees

Chuck Crow/The Plain DealerTravis Hafner (48) and Victor Martinez (41) congratulate Jhonny Peralta after his three-run homer in the fifth inning scored them and put the Tribe ahead of the Yankees, 4-3, on Friday at Progressive Field. Franklin Gutierrez followed Peralta's blast with one of this own to put the Tribe up, 5-3.

The Indians used scare tactics to take care of the Yankees on Friday night. No need for midges, just good at-bats, especially with two outs.

They kept harassing New York starter Andy Pettitte until they solved the left-hander for good. It took them until the fifth inning, but it looked to be just a matter of time.
It came in sudden fashion as the Tribe put together four hits for four runs, all with two outs, and beat the Yankees, 6-4, in the opener of the four-game series at Progressive Field.

Cleveland Indians Insider: Jake Westbrook healing; Ben Francisco hoping

Jake Westbrook said he knew something was wrong right away. When he threw a fastball to Minnesota's Mike Lamb last Saturday, the pain to his left ribs was immediate. He managed to finish the inning, but wound up on the 15-day disabled list with an intercostal -- muscles between the ribs -- strain.
It was another bump in the road for Westbrook, who last season missed seven weeks with a left oblique strain.
"I actually did more [in the off-season] to prevent stuff like this," said Westbrook (1-2, 2.73 ERA). "I threw a fastball inside. I left one over the middle for [Justin] Morneau and I didn't want to do that again."

Cleveland Indians' Cliff Lee's '07 misery driving his '08 mastery

With each pitch this season, Cliff Lee has made the image in the rearview mirror appear that much smaller.
"I've got a little extra motivation given the way I pitched last year," he said. "I almost feel like I've got to prove myself again. That's how bad last year was."
The Kansas City Royals were the latest team to feel the heat of Lee's angst. The left-hander threw a three-hitter for a 2-0 victory Thursday night at Kauffman Stadium. It gave the Indians a doubleheader and three-game-series sweep.

Lee's first career shutout expanded by nine innings one of the finest season commencements for a pitcher in any era. He is 4-0 with a 0.28 ERA in four starts covering 31-2/3 innings. He has allowed 11 hits and one earned run, walked two and struck out 29.

Don't look now, but a 6-4 win over the Yanks extends the win streak to 4 games. Hopefully 2006 Jeremy Sowers shows up tomorrow and not the 2007 version.

Everytime I write something disparaging about these guys or the team, they start doing better.

I think you will be posting quite:biggrin2: a bit is this thread if that is the way your posts have on the Indians player's performance. I think CC pitches today and Sowers tomorrow with Laffey going on Monday. I would rather see Laffey pitch tomo

Ooops:blush:, my bad, Sowers pitching today and CC tomorrow.

I would like to add that I like RB as our closer. When Joe gets off the disabled list send him packing. At least, Raffy can strike out some hitters unlike Joe. I will admit that Raffy gives up an occasional home run but that is okay at least he doesn't give up numerous hits like Joe. I can live with this occasional homerun pitch.rrow and then pray for rain.

Either put Michaels or Fransisco in LF from now on...Dellucci looked like he just started playing that position today. Every fly ball hit to him he looked like he was unsure what to do. And Sowers pitched real well today, just that 6th inning I think Wedge should have taken him out before that last walk to load the bases.

Delucci just cost us 2 runs.....3-3 tie right now with New York.....6th inning......
That was a hard catch with the ball slicing away from him. He was really caught in between once he started to go in on the the ball. He either had to go for the catch or nothing at that point. There was no way he could really get back on the ball IMO.

Remember he did have a hit in the bottom of the ninth which helped us win the game.

Delucci is our leadoff hitter?!?!? Has there ever been a slower leadoff hitter in the history of baseball?

Good thing CC's on the mound today, hopefully he brings the stuff he had in his last outing.

Edit: Immediately after I post this, Delucci leads off with a hit. He's still slow though.

Midget Gaedel walks in only MLB appearance

In perhaps his most outrageous stunt, St. Louis Browns president Bill Veeck sends a midget to bat. Eddie Gaedel, all of 3-foot-7, pops out of a giant-sized cake and a few minutes later is sent up to pinch-hit for the Browns' leadoff hitter in the home first inning in the second game of a doubleheader against Detroit.

When "No. 1/8, Eddie Gaedel, batting for Saucier" is announced over the loudspeaker, home-plate umpire Ed Hurley points to the Browns dugout. Manager Zack Taylor hands Hurley the official American League contract for the 26-year-old stuntman from Chicago.

Tigers left-hander Bob Cain walks Gaedel on four pitches (all high, naturally). Replaced by a pinch-runner, Gaedel bows and doffs his cap repeatedly, to the delight of a paid crowd of 18,369.

Martinez hit in ninth lifts Indians
Tribe weathers comeback to win its fifth straight

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CLEVELAND -- Depending on your assets, a baseball team's depth can resemble a baby pool or a Pacific Ocean trench.
The New York Yankees, the entire $209 million payroll, showed up for work against the Indians yesterday in Progressive Field with a starting lineup that didn't include Jorge Posada, Hideki Matsui, Bobby Abreu and Robinson Cano.
Cleveland's Jeremy Sowers, called up from triple-A Buffalo to make his first start of the season for the Tribe, still recognized the names of Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Jason Giambi and Johnny Damon.
"It's a very intimidating franchise to play," Sowers said. "But somehow you have to convince yourself that they're just like everybody else. Their hitters get out. Even the best teams still lose quite frequently. The game of baseball is always going to have a fairly even playing field."

Snyder's promotion only lasts for one day

CLEVELAND: Outfielder Brad Snyder got his first taste of the big leagues as a Sunday call-up from Triple-A Buffalo. He didn't get to play and he didn't stay long. The Indians optioned Snyder back to Triple-A so Aaron Laffey can take his place on the roster and start tonight against the New York Yankees.
Why call up a player for one day? Why not? Laffey wasn't needed until tonight, so there was no harm in having an extra position player around, just in case.
Snyder is batting .236 with five doubles and four homers at Buffalo. He was born in Sandusky and went to high school in Bellevue.
Jeremy Sowers, who started Saturday night, was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Snyder.
OTHER STUFF ? In nine career starts against the New York Yankees, C.C. Sabathia is 1-8 with a 6.16 ERA. . . . Victor Martinez singled and has hit in nine consecutive games. In his past 11 games, Martinez is batting .417. . . . The 1-0 loss Sunday ended the Tribe's winning streak at five. . . . According to Elias Sports Bureau, Martinez's walk-off single Saturday night was his first career RBI (of 425) to end a game. The only active player with more RBI who has never driven in a run to end a game is Lance Berkman with 878.
