Indians Insider: Hafner gets some rest for ailing shoulder

Minneapolis -- Eric Wedge manipulated his lineup for Friday's game against the Twins at the Metrodome because of Travis Hafner's right shoulder and Victor Martinez's left hamstring.
Hafner missed his first start of the season because of the shoulder.
"The shoulder has been bothering him on and off since spring training," said Wedge. "The last couple of days, it's been bothering him a little more. I wanted to give him today, and with the off-day Monday, maybe it will be OK.
"The Twins are using a left-hander [Francisco Liriano] tonight, so it seemed like a good time to rest Travis. You want him in the lineup, but I don't think it's anything to be concerned about."

Lee the ace and CC

The problem is that it is very early in the season and hopefully Lee will not hold on us because we really need him to step up this season if we are going to make a run.

C. C. better get in the bullpen and worked on his "mechanical problems". If he is heading mechanical problems now what the hell did they have Spring training for. You would have thought he was having problems back then. I think one of his problems is that he tries to be a pitcher with many pitches and if he would just settle on three pitches similar to Carmona I think he would be much better off IMO

Twins' highly touted pitcher Blackburn stymies Indians, 3-0

Minneapolis -- The scouts who saw Nick Blackburn in spring training this year were right. They said he was one of the best young pitchers they'd seen in a long time and Saturday he pitched like it at the Indians' expense.

Minnesota's Nick Blackburn earned his first big-league victory with 7.2 innings of eight-hit shutout pitching Saturday in the Twins' 3-0 victory over the Indians. Blackburn didn't walk a batter, and induced four double plays.
Blackburn threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings as the Twins beat the Indians, 3-0, at the Metrodome. The loss ended the Indians' two-game winning streak, which matched their longest of the season.

This team is just plain awful offensively. I guess I'll say it, if some serious changes aren't made, they won't crack 80 wins this season. The corner outfield spots are useless, Pronk still isn't hitting, I think Blake is done, Asdrubal is still in a slumber and Peralta is average at best.

1-1 in the 10th. A whopping 6 hits tonight. :shake:

Tribe hitters still missing Another outstanding start by Byrd goes to waste in 10-inning loss to Twins
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Monday, Apr 21, 2008
MINNEAPOLIS: If there were any doubts, the math makes it clear that the Indians aren't likely to win many three-game series if they can't score more than five runs.
In a painful real-world sample over the weekend, the Tribe scored 4, 0 and 1 run against the Minnesota Twins and lost two of three, including Sunday's irritating 2-1, 10-inning finale at the Metrodome.
You want pitching, come see these Indians. Paul Byrd held the Twins to one run and six hits in seven innings, before the bullpen finally succumbed. Even then, it's difficult to fault Masa Kobayashi (two-thirds scoreless) and Rafael Perez, who threw two innings but gave up the game winner on three consecutive singles after retiring the first two batters in the 10th.
No pitching staff can hold an opposing lineup forever. Even the Tribe might have scored another run had the game droned on long enough, say 18-20 innings. That's how impotent the club's attack has looked for most of the young season.

Better fastball putsByrd back on track Published on Monday, Apr 21, 2008
Better fastball puts
Byrd back on track
MINNEAPOLIS: At least Paul Byrd is off the Indians' list of things to worry about.
After his first two starts of the season produced an 11.05 ERA, Byrd gave up only one earned run in 13 innings in his next two outings, including Sunday, when the Tribe lost 2-1 to the Minnesota Twins in 10 innings.
What happened to turn things around for Byrd?
''I really don't know,'' he said. ''It's one of those things I don't have an answer for. My fastball just showed up. Maybe I went through a little dead-arm period.''
Unfortunately for Byrd, the Tribe won neither of his past two starts, even though on Sunday he limited the Twins to one run and six hits in seven innings. He has not walked a batter in either of his past two starts.
Curiously, manager Eric Wedge pulled him relatively early in his outing against the Boston Red Sox last Tuesday and again on Sunday against the Twins. Byrd was limited to 78 pitches against the Red Sox and 85 against the Twins, and in neither game did he show signs of fading.

Cleveland Indians' sickly offense wastes strong start from Paul Byrd

Monday, April 21, 2008Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Minneapolis -- It's all right to scream. Just let it go.
All together now: "Just where in the name of Albert Belle has the Indians' offense gone?"
The Indians lost to the Twins, 2-1, in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at the Metrodome. It was so bad, manager Eric Wedge said his players' at-bats were worse Sunday than they were Saturday. The Indians were shut out, 3-0, Saturday, so that's saying something.
@StoryAd
Scott Baker and three relievers held the Indians to one run on six hits. Justin Morneau won it with a two-out single through the right side of the infield in the 10th against gasping lefty Rafael Perez (0-1), who entered in the eighth. Morneau is now 1-for-8 against Perez.
The loss ruined another fine performance by the starting rotation. Jake Westbrook took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs in seven innings. Paul Byrd escaped with a no-decision after allowing one run on six hits over seven innings.
"We didn't do a very good job with our at-bats," said Wedge. "We were better [Saturday]. We just didn't get it done."

Cleveland Indians Insider: Rafael Betancourt still waiting for chance at a save in 2008

Monday, April 21, 2008
Minneapolis- If you're a closer who doesn't get a chance to close, are you really a closer?
Rafael Betancourt was named the Indians' closer Tuesday when Joe Borowski was placed on the disabled list with a strained right triceps. Borowski can't touch a baseball for at least 10 days and could be out for as much as four weeks. That gives Betancourt, one of baseball's top setup men, plenty of time to show he can be a closer.
It all depends, of course, on the Indians creating save situations. They haven't had one in the ninth inning since Borowski's blown save against Boston on April 14. Betancourt has made one appearance since then to stay sharp.
@StoryAd
"It's good we got him in the game the other day," said manager Eric Wedge, "but we have to put ourselves in a better situation teamwise, so we can use him to close the ballgame."
Betancourt said he will take the same approach to closing that he's had as a setup man.
"I'm going to be aggressive and get the last three outs of the game," said Betancourt. "The only difference is that you're finishing the game."
Betancourt has had problems working on consecutive days - though he hasn't had to worry about that since getting the job - but seemed to overcome that problem in the setup role last year.

Punchless Tribe falls to Twins, 2-1
Indians haven't won series in last 6 tries

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

MINNEAPOLIS Well, it was a great four days.

The time span referred to here was the first series of the regular season, when the Indians took 2 of 3 games from Chicago and looked like defending division champions tend to look. Major League Baseball, however, required the Indians to play the other 159 games, anyway.

The rest of the season has not gone well. The most recent kick to the stomach came Sunday, when Justin Morneau's 10th-inning RBI single gave Minnesota a 2-1 victory at the Metrodome.

The Indians have played six series since the White Sox left town April 3.

They have won exactly none of them.

"We need something to get us over that hump," third baseman Casey Blake said. "It's just hard to come by right now."

Hitters have figured out Rafael Perez, looks like he is a 1 year wonder
I think Perez is still a quality setup guy. He just made a mistake to one of the better hitters in the AL.

If you want to get on somebody, you should try our corner outfielders and our 3rd baseman who cannot hit worth crap. Shapiro had to knows something going into this season and why he did not make a trade and give up some of our young talent is beyond my comprehension.

Also with the lack of hitting, it would be nice if Wedge
little bit about how to manufacture runs but that is beyond his baseball knowledge.
