Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Not to rain on your parade (and really I'm not), but Francisco Rodriguez looked shaky against the Rangers too...it figures a more potent lineup like what the Indians bring got to him finally.

if by potent line-up you mean line-up that has scored 2-3 runs in the last 3 games.

Anyways, you have to like Michaels approach at the plate. The guy is just the consumate professional. He makes things look easy out there. Whether Wedge puts him in the 3 or 2 hole, you can count on him to make a major impact on the game.

I feel sorry for the pitcher when he arrives at the game, sees the line-up card, and then realizes he WILL see J-Mike in the 1st inning. Nowhere to hide.

if it were June, then yes I'd agree with you. But it's the 2nd week of April.

and they did it all of last year. It's amazing how good the pitching was for the Tribe last year.

It's actually shocking, with a team with so much offensive fire power, how often they show up unable to hit.

It's abolutely been feast or famine with this team for 3 years. You either get 9 runs or 1-2 runs.

The Indians scored over 800 runs last year and will likely do the same this year.

I think you are being overly-critical of the offense but that's just me - every year is different, just ask the Tigers...

I understand your position but ask Cliff Lee from 2 years ago or Jake Westbrook from last year if I'm being overly critical.

I think it'd be a nice study to see how many of those 800+ routes came in games where we just "McNeiled" someone. We've had more than our fair share of 1-2 run outputs over the last 2 years.

Martinez gets start, told to run carefull... Published on Tuesday, Apr 08, 2008
Martinez gets start,
told to run carefully

ANAHEIM, CALIF.: Victor Martinez returned to the lineup after missing five games with a strained left hamstring.
Manager Eric Wedge isn't worried about a recurrence of the injury while Martinez is catching, but he had one piece of advise: ''One area he needs to be disciplined about is running the bases. He should not try to do too much.''
Martinez went through several drills Monday to test the leg: running the bases, throwing and catching.
WHO'S ON SECOND? ? Utility infielder Jamey Carroll gave Asdrubal Cabrera a day off by starting at second base Monday night.
''Jamey can play every position in the infield,'' Wedge said. ''But if I had to guess, he's probably played second more than anything else. And we need to keep Asdrubal fresh, mentally and physically, especially because he's a young player.''
Carroll probably will not play shortstop when Jhonny Peralta gets a day off.
''What we would do is move Asdrubal to short,'' Wedge said.

Martinez passes test to return to lineup

Tuesday, April 08, 2008Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Anaheim, Calif.- The audience included manager Eric Wedge, head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff, strength coach Tim Maxey, third base coach Joel Skinner, first base coach Luis Rivera and pitcher Paul Byrd. Britney Spears and a mob of paparazzi were turned away at the gates of Angel Stadium.
They all gathered Monday afternoon to see if catcher Victor Martinez passed his final test before returning to the lineup. Martinez passed and started Monday night against the Angels, a week after straining his left hamstring in the season opener against the Chicago White Sox.
Martinez took batting practice, circled the bases hard at least twice and went from home to second and second to home on the run a couple of times. He took throws from Skinner while in a catcher's crouch and threw to Rivera, simulating throws to second base.

"Victor is back in there," manager Eric Wedge said. "He felt pretty good. The only area he has to discipline himself is running the bases. He just can't try to do too much."
It was suggested, in a kidding manner of course, that slow-footed Martinez would no longer have the green light to steal second and third.
Wedge smiled and said: "We're going to take that part of his game away from him for a couple of days. Then we'll turn him back loose."

Indians torched by an Angel

Tuesday, April 08, 2008Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Anaheim, Calif.- Catcher Victor Martinez returned to the starting lineup Monday night. He recharged the Indians offense, but the charge didn't reach closer Joe Borowski.
After the Indians took a 4-2 lead in the ninth, Borowski gave up a grand slam to Torii Hunter in the bottom of the inning to give the Angels a 6-4 victory. The slam was Hunter's second homer of the game.
Borowski retired Chone Figgins to start the inning, but walked Gary Matthews, gave up a single to Vladimir Guerrero and walked Garret Anderson to bring Hunter to the plate. Hunter sent Borowski's 1-0 pitch high and deep over the left field wall.

The Indians rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the ninth off Francisco Rodriguez and Scot Shields .
Travis Hafner started it with a leadoff walk in the ninth. Martinez lined a double into the right-field corner that turned Guerrero every which way but lose. Pinch-runner Asdrubal Cabrera scored from first to make it 2-2. Jhonny Peralta doubled past first to bring home pinch-runner David Dellucci for a 3-2 lead.
Shields replaced Rodriguez after he walked Ryan Garko, but the fun didn't stop. Franklin Gutierrez broke an 0-for-18 slump with a bloop single. Casey Blake, whose throwing error gave the Angels their first run, singled home Garko to end the three-run rally.
