Hafner powers Tribe over Jays
DH hits first spring homer as Indians bang out 15 hits in win

INDIANS 9, BLUE JAYS 5
at Winter Haven, Fla.
Thursday, March 13
Jays at the plate: Gregg Zaun was 1-for-7 coming into Thursday's game, but he broke out in a big way. Zaun scored the Jays' first run when Lyle Overbay knocked him in with a single in the first, drove home two more with a double in the third and cranked out his first homer of the spring -- a solo shot off Aaron Laffey -- in the fifth. Indians at the plate: Big hits abounded for the Tribe on this day. Travis Hafner, who went homerless all of last spring en route to a disappointing 2007, continued his spring surge with a two-run shot off Sean Marcum in the third. Utility infielder Jamey Carroll had a nice day, driving in a run with a single in the third and two more with a triple in the fifth.

Why the hell don't they cut their losses and just let Marte go and keep Francisco or Barfield? I guess Shapiro does not want to look bad and Wedge is his boy. Just because they have made other stupid moves by letting guys go should not preclude them from letting a guy who might not live up to expectations hold up quality young players from getting experience.

My brother was at a Indians exhibition game the other day and he said Marte made three errors and looked terrible. He is betting under 200 and Francisco is leading the team in hitting and Barfield is right behind him.

I think they are a little gun shy to trade Marte after what happened to Brandon Phillips....they do not want to let him go and then....BOOM....he becomes an All-Star.....Marte needs to relax and just take it one day at a time.
Yup and watch Marte be the flop just like Phillips was the one we should not have let go. It always works that way for the Indians or at least Shapiro.

I think they've rushed some guys like Marte to the bigs to fast.

Phillips immaturity in some ways left them no choice.

I guess K. Kouzmanoff is the starting 3rd baseman for the the Padres this year...

Tribe's talent pool deep in most areas Players with big-league ability will start in minors
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Monday, Mar 17, 2008
TAMPA: All teams aspire but few achieve the goal of putting together a team with depth.
It's difficult enough to have all the bases (literally) covered at the major-league level. It is rare to manufacture a club that can withstand injuries at every position by plucking talented players from its minor-league system.
However, the Indians managed to do just that last year. When Cliff Lee went down with an injury in spring training, Fausto Carmona came to the rescue. When Lee returned, Jake Westbrook took his place on the disabled list and Carmona took over his spot in the rotation.
But that's an understatement. Carmona went on to post a 19-8 record and 3.06 ERA (second in the American League) as a virtual rookie starter.
And that was only part of the story. Tribe deep thinkers were expecting Josh Barfield to make a relatively smooth transition from the National League, where he spent his rookie season locking up the second base job with the San Diego Padres.

Sabathia walks away unhappy Lacking pitch control annoying but not tragic in 7-6 loss to Yankees
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Monday, Mar 17, 2008
TAMPA: It wasn't the sort of outing likely to make C.C. Sabathia's day.
His start was several notches above awful, but it took 74 pitches to wade through four innings of Yankee batters, as the Indians lost 7-6 Sunday at Legends Field.
Shelley Duncan hit a two-run homer to lead the New York attack against Sabathia, but most disappointing to the Tribe ace was walking three batters. He also gave up five hits and struck out three.
''I was a little erratic,'' he said. ''I was all over the place with my fastball. The walks were the toughest thing. . . . I threw a couple of pitches I wouldn't throw in situations (during the season), but I threw some good cutters and changeups.''

Sabathia pitches 4 innings in Indians' 7-6 loss to Yankees

3/16/2008, 6:07 p.m. EDT The Associated Press
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? C.C. Sabathia is focused on helping the Cleveland Indians win this year. That doesn't mean speculation about his potential free agency after this season isn't already a topic.
The 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner allowed three runs and five hits over four innings Sunday in the Indians' 7-6 loss to the New York Yankees, a team that could offer the left-hander big money should he reach the open market.
"I'm focused on this season right now, playing in Cleveland and trying to win," Sabathia said. "I think we have a good chance to win. After the year we had and being able to bring everybody back, and given a chance to go at it again. I definitely feel like we've got a confidence in here."
Asked if in a perfect world he would stay with Cleveland, Sabathia said "Of course."

Tribe roster about set; let countdown begin
Monday, March 17, 2008
BY Andy Call
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

TAMPA, Fla. Two weeks until Opening Day.

Perhaps that statement won't actually make the remainder of winter pass any more quickly, but at least there's hope.

The Indians and White Sox are indeed scheduled to play baseball March 31 at Progressive Park. That gives fans exactly two weeks to purchase blankets, warm socks and those hats with the furry ear flaps. It also gives the Indians exactly two weeks to determine the makeup of their roster as well as the roles for those 25 players.

"We're definitely getting ready," right-hander Jake Westbrook said. "I'm very excited about the (pitching) rotation we have. It's going to make for a fun year, to watch those guys pitch and compare yourself with them."

Starting pitching is expected to be the backbone of the 2008 Indians, and the top four pitchers in that rotation (knock on wood, Indians fans) have all appeared healthy and effective this spring. Westbrook has been even a bit better than effective, working eight shutout innings while allowing five hits and four walks.

Sabathia 'erratic' in loss to Yankees
UPDATE: 4:58 PM, Sunday, March 16, 2008
By Andy Call
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

TAMPA The New York Yankees scored three runs off Tom Mastny in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday to defeat Cleveland, 7-6, in a spring-training game at Legends Field.

Mastny gave up two doubles, a walk and Nick Green's game-ending, two-run single.

Indians starter C.C. Sabathia threw 74 pitches in four innings, giving up five hits and three runs. "I'm going to apologize to (outfielders) Grady Sizemore and David Dellucci," Sabathia said. "It's the hottest day of the year, and I've got them out there running a track meet."

Sabathia characterized his outing as "a little erratic," citing his three walks. He had been scheduled to pitch five innings.

"I did feel good out there," Sabathia said. "I was able to throw some good fastballs and changeups and a couple pretty good cutters."

Indians' Marte wants to prove he belongs in majors
Sunday, March 16, 2008
By Andy Call
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. Andy Marte has reached a crossroads in his career. He'd like to help his bosses determine what direction that career will take.

The 24-year-old third baseman belted two home runs and drove in six runs Saturday during a 14-6 spring-training victory over a Houston split squad at Chain of Lakes Park. It was a high point in what has been a wildly up-and-down spring.

"Being consistent has been a problem for me," Marte admitted. "I have to make the changes. I have to make the team and prove I should be here."

OUT OF OPTIONS

The Indians will face a decision on Marte's future at some point this summer. He is out of minor-league options and would likely be claimed if Cleveland attempted to pass him through waivers.

Around Baseball: Sowers defies those baseball stereotypes
Sunday, March 16, 2008
By Andy Call
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

Jeremy Sowers isn't a hard guy to find in the Cleveland Indians clubhouse.

He's the guy with the book.

Stereotyping ballplayers isn't fair, of course. It is fair to say the covers of most magazines on the tables of a big-league clubhouse have an attractive young woman not exactly dressed for church. The corners on the copies of Newsweek and Time aren't usually bent.

Sowers, a 24-year-old left-hander who graduated from Vanderbilt with a degree in political science in 2005, has literary tastes with a bit more substance. On this day in spring training, he has finished reading nearly half of "In An Uncertain World," an account by former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin of his life on Wall Street and in the Clinton administration.

Reliever affirms Tribe's faith After shaky spring start, Kobayashi looks strong and improves steadily
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Tuesday, Mar 18, 2008
CLEARWATER, FLA.: It has been less than three weeks, but Masa Kobayashi seems to have made giant strides toward living up to his reputation as one of Japan's premier relief pitchers.
In his first outing of the spring, a Feb. 29 game between the Indians and Houston Astros, Kobayashi loaded the bases on two hits and an error but retired the next three batters without a run scoring. Despite the magic act he performed in extricating himself from a dire situation, Kobayashi did not impress observers with the quality of his stuff.
