Indians Insider: Marte's injury could open third to Peralta, Martinez for infield experiment

by Paul Hoynes Wednesday September 24, 2008, 10:22 PM

BOSTON -- Third baseman Andy Marte's disappointing season has come to a disappointing end. Marte is scheduled to return to Cleveland today to have an MRI on his injured left calf.
"He's done ... he won't play for the rest of the season," said manager Eric Wedge, referring to the last five games on the Indians schedule.
Marte, using crutches to get around the locker room, said he heard something "pop" in his calf as he ran to first base on a grounder to short in the third inning Tuesday. Marte's injury creates some interesting scenarios at third for the remainder of the season.
Wedge said he's going to try and use Jamey Carroll the rest of the way, but if something derails those plans, he might use shortstop Jhonny Peralta or catcher Victor Martinez at third. When Asdrubal Cabrera's three-game suspension ends after Thursday's game against Boston, it will give Wedge more options.

"When I told Victor that he might play third, his eyes lit up," said Wedge.
The Indians signed Martinez as a shortstop before switching him to catcher. He always takes ground balls at short and third during batting practice.
If Peralta plays third, it could be a harbinger. The Indians, sold on Peralta at shortstop over the last few years because of his offense, have indicated that they might be open to moving him to third next year.

Indians first pitch: Lee done for the season?

by Paul Hoynes Wednesday September 24, 2008, 7:14 PM

Clubhouse confidential: Manager Eric Wedge said it's possible that American League Cy Young favorite Cliff Lee may not start Sunday's season finale against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
"Let's just see what that game means," said Wedge. "As of right now he's starting."
Chicago held a 1 1/2 game lead over the Twins in the AL Central entering Wednesday's game at the Metrodome. The Indians open a three-game series against Chicago on Friday. If necessary, Chicago will play a makeup game against Detroit on Monday.
Lee (22-3, 2.54) has already thrown a career-high 223 1/3 innings and has shown signs of fatigue in his last three starts.
Internal discord: The Indians were not happy to find out that right-hander Brian Slocum, a September call-up, apparently arrived in Cleveland with a sore right elbow. Slocum, who will undergo surgery on Thursday at Cleveland Clinic, wouldn't have gotten the call if the Indians knew he was injured.

now that could prove very interesting. I wonder how Martinez would play at 3rd base.

I knew he came up in the minor leagues as a 3rd basemen before he was converted to catcher. I have a funny feeling he just wasn't a good 3rd basemen.

The Cleveland Indians are playing out the string on their season this weekend, but they have reason to root for the Brewers to win the National League's wild-card spot.
If Milwaukee makes the playoffs, the Indians choose the player to be named in the CC Sabathia trade; the Brewers get to make the pick if they fail to make the postseason.
The Tribe supposedly prefers outfielder Michael Brantley, a left-handed batter who hit .319 with 23 extra-base hits and 28 stolen bases with double-A Huntsville. The Brewers apparently would prefer the Indians take third baseman Taylor Green, who hit .289 with 19 doubles, 15 homers and 73 RBI in class-A.
Brantley is projected as being closer to ready for the big leagues.

Speed trap: Sowers' slow start ends Tribe chances quickly in 6-1 loss to Boston

by Paul Hoynes Thursday September 25, 2008, 11:19 PM

Charles Krupa/Associated PressAllowing five runs in the frist two innings made Jeremy Sowers' last start of the season a difficult one Thursday night in Boston. Sowers eventually settled down, but the Indians' offense never stirred in a 6-1 loss at Fenway Park.

BOSTON -- For such a simple game, baseball sure can be complicated.
Last year, left-hander Jeremy Sowers went into the off-season with orders to make his fastball faster. He didn't turn himself into Randy Johnson, but he did consistently throw between 90 mph and 91 mph this season.
This winter, following the Indians' 6-1 loss to Boston on Thursday in Sowers' final start of the season, his winter will be directed toward slowing down his change-up.

Indians Insider: Peralta will try third in Chicago

by Paul Hoynes Thursday September 25, 2008, 8:53 PM

Charles Krupa/Associated PressJhonny Peralta, who hurdled Boston's Jason Bay in turning a double play on Thursday, will shift to third base for Friday's series opener at Chicago.

BOSTON -- Jhonny Peralta, following Andy Marte's calf injury, is scheduled to make his big-league debut at third base Friday night at U.S. Cellular Field against Chicago.
The question is, will it become Peralta's permanent position next year?
"Wedgie told me I'd be playing third base Friday," said Peralta, "but he didn't say anything about next year. I want to play shortstop forever, but it's their decision."
Marte's poor performance at third following the trade of Casey Blake in July, more so than Tuesday's calf injury, has created a need at third. If the Indians can obtain a second baseman in the off-season -- it doesn't seem likely they'll give the job to Josh Barfield -- it would allow them to move Asdrubal Cabrera to short and Peralta to third.

Garko's big night sinks White Sox

Saturday, September 27, 2008 3:02 AM

From wire reports

CHICAGO -- Ryan Garko and the Cleveland Indians kept the struggling Chicago White Sox in second place.
Garko homered twice, including a grand slam in a six-run fifth inning, and had five RBI to help the Indians send the White Sox to their fourth straight loss, 11-8 last night.
Chicago missed a chance to move back into first in the American League Central when Minnesota lost at home to Kansas City 8-1. The White Sox had just dropped three straight to the Twins in the Metrodome and were hoping to regroup in U.S. Cellular Field.

Tribe puts White Sox on brink of elimination

by Paul Hoynes Saturday September 27, 2008, 11:21 PM

medium_tribe0928ap.jpg
Associated PressThe Indians look to play the role of spoiler this season as they face the White Sox.

Chicago -- There's one game left in the regular season, and the Indians haven't stopped making life miserable for manager Ozzie Guillen and the White Sox.
Zach Jackson pitched seven strong innings Saturday night, and the Indians offense pounded Javier Vazquez and Chicago's pitiful bullpen on the way to a 12-6 victory at U.S. Cellular Field. The Indians prevented the White Sox from reclaiming first place in the AL Central from the Twins for the second straight night with a one-sided victory.

If Guillen, his team facing possible elimination today, is worried, he didn't look like it. On his way to the interview room after Chicago's fifth straight loss, he stopped to shake hands with Victor Martinez's 4-year-old son outside the Indians clubhouse.

Cliff Lee scratched from Sunday's season finale against Chicago

by Paul Hoynes Saturday September 27, 2008, 6:41 PM

Chicago ---- A stiff neck has ended AL Cy Young favorite Cliff Lee's season.
Lee was scheduled to start against Chicago in Sunday's season finale, but his neck was still sore after playing catch Saturday afternoon. Manager Eric Wedge and pitching coach Carl Willis decided it was best not to let the 22-game winner make his 32nd start of the season.
Bryan Bullington will start in Lee's place.
"There was a chance Cliff could hurt himself by changing his delivery," said Wedge. "No way are we going to do that."
Lee and Arizona's Brandon Webb lead the big leagues with 22 victories each. Lee's 2.54 ERA leads the big leagues.
"I want to pitch," said Lee, "but I don't want to go out there without my best stuff. If I'm feeling something on every pitch, I don't think that makes a lot of sense to go out there. If I have to change my motion so I don't feel anything, than why do it?"

Indians Insider: Lee scratched from season finale

by Paul Hoynes Saturday September 27, 2008, 9:38 PM

Chicago -- Cliff Lee's off-season began Saturday.
The AL Cy Young favorite was scheduled to end the season today against Chicago, but Indians manager Eric Wedge wouldn't let him pitch because of a stiff neck.
Bryan Bullington, who threw five scoreless innings in relief of Fausto Carmona on Wednesday in Boston, will start in Lee's place.
"There was a chance Cliff could hurt himself by changing his delivery," said Wedge. "No way are we going to do that."
Lee ends the best season in his career at 22-3 with a 2.54 ERA. He's tied with Arizona's Brandon Webb for the MLB lead in victories. His ERA is the best in the big leagues.
"I want to pitch," said Lee, "but I don't want to go out there without my best stuff. If I'm feeling something on every pitch, I don't think that makes a lot of sense to go out there. If I have to change my motion so I don't feel anything, than why do it?"
Lee fell one victory short of tying Vean Gregg for the franchise record in wins by a left-hander. Gregg won 23 games in 1911.
