the Indians could also sign Blake after this season is over because I think he does like Cleveland. However, Marte B.A. is now over 190 so he might be a keeper.traded third baseman/outfielder Casey Blake
Agree to a certain extent because Shopach is starting to hit pretty good but how long can Victor last catching that probably is the bigger question.mstevmac;1215402; said:Why the heck would you get rid of blake for a catcher and a pitcher? I can see the pitcher, but why do we need ANOTHER catcher? Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
I don't know if he would go for it because he enjoys catching but his legs are giving him problems. Maybe that Shopach do the majority of the catching if he continues to hit like he has been lately. I am not a big fan of RGarko.mstevmac;1215412; said:Litl are you saying moving Victor to 1st? That wouldn't be all that bad

The Indians, in another move to bolster their starting pitching depth, today acquired St. Louis right-hander Anthony Reyes for Class AA reliever Luis Perdomo.
Reyes, who won Game 1 of the 2006 World Series for the Cardinals, but has been unable to recapture that magic, was 2-3 with a 3.25 ERA in 11 starts at Class AAA Memphis. He's spent 10 games with the Cardinals this year, going 2-1 in 10 appearances. Reyes will report to Class AAA Buffalo
.
Perdomo, a right-hander, has spent six years in the Indians system and is a product of their baseball academy in the Dominican Republic. He was 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA and one save in nine appearances at Class AA Akron with 17 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings.

We need a catching prospect. Victor's long term future is probably at 1st, and while Shoppach has been serviceable, this kid has the potential to be more. Not a bad move, they weren't gonna get much more for him.mstevmac;1215402; said:Why the heck would you get rid of blake for a catcher and a pitcher? Blake traded to Dodgers for prospects
Shapiro also works out deal for Reyes from Cardinals

THE PLAIN DEALER
CLEVELAND -- A trade that didn't happen led the way to one that did yesterday, when the Indians sent Casey Blake to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor leaguers Jon Meloan and Carlos Santana.
Meloan, 24, a starter for triple-A Las Vegas, was sent to triple-A Buffalo, where he'll be moved to the bullpen. Santana, 22, a switch-hitting catcher who leads all minor leaguers with 96 RBI and 88 runs scored this year, will report to class-A Kinston.
The trade gives third baseman Andy Marte and first baseman Ryan Garko a little more than two months to show they can be part of the Tribe's future. Blake's primary positions were third and first base.
The Indians told Blake that they would try to re-sign him as a free agent after the season.
When the Indians were weighing offers for CC Sabathia, the Dodgers were a key player. A deal involving Sabathia, Blake and utility infielder Jamey Carroll in exchange for a package of players that reportedly included Santana, Meloan and at least two others came close to fruition.
When the Dodgers expressed renewed interest in Blake on Friday, the two sides didn't have a lot of ground to cover.

Cleveland Indians' Fausto Carmona roughed up in first start off disabled list
Sunday, July 27, 2008 Mike Peticca
Plain Dealer Reporter
Through the turmoil of the Indi ans' lost and injury- riddled season, their roster upheaval and his own nine-week stay on the disabled list, Fausto Carmona stands where it all began, expected to flourish as one of the team's top two starting pitchers.
It was the right-handed Carmona who matched left-handed ace CC Sabathia's 19 wins last season. In the wake of the Indians' July 7 trade of Sabathia to the Milwaukee Brewers, it is Carmona whom the Indians expect to pair with another lefty, Cliff Lee, to form a dynamic 1-2 punch.Cont..
ABOUT THE INDIANS . . .
Sunday, July 27, 2008
It appears the Indians will give Franklin Gutierrez some consistent playing time for the rest of the weekend, at least that was what they were saying going into this weekend. It makes sense as the Indians insist the rest of this season is to set the stage for 2009, just as it made no sense for so many of those at-bats to go to Dave Dellucci. #=cm MDSH=# as the Indians insist the rest of this season is to set the stage for 2009. -RD%>Gutierrez is 25 and when the Indians say he is a Gold Glove-caliber outfielder, they are right. But he has to hit, not just for average, but power.

Cleveland Indians' trading of free agents to be going well, writes The Plain Dealer's Terry Pluto
Sunday, July 27, 2008
It's hard to believe the Indi ans picked up two prime prospects in catcher Carlos Santana and pitcher Jon Meloan for a 34-year-old Casey Blake headed to free agency.
That's not a knock on Blake (.289, 11 HR, 58 RBI) who is having a career year. But when a Cleveland player is this close to free agency, he's gone at the end of the season.
The Indians haven't said so, but this means Jhonny Peralta could be at third next year, with Asdrubal Cabrera bringing a Hoover of a glove to shortstop. In the meantime, they can find out if Andy Marte can grab the third-base job.
