Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

C.C. is throwing well.....I was surprised they left him in for a complete game shutout against the Giants the other night. The game was over, but they send him out for another 20 pitches. I know you probabaly won't be resigning him, but is there no concern for dead-arm down the stretch this year?

i dont think we resign him either but this from someone else is interesting:

Gagne comes off the payroll this offseason, there's $10 million.
Sheets leaves town, there's another $11 million.
We'd have to pay Cameron $10 million for his 2009 option so I'd say he's gone, there's another $5 million.
Chris Capuano's contract is up after this season, $3.75 million.
Turnbow aswell, $3.2 million.
Counsell's likely done, $2.8 million.
Mota, $3.2 million
Cluadio Vargas was still getting money from us this season, $0.9 million.

That right there is $39.85 million coming off of our payroll. Take off the $11 million CC's currently getting and that's $50.85 million!

cc will get 20m somewhere, but not from us most likely. but we will have $$ to play with at least....

I don't think it will be so much the $$ that will scare teams off but I think it would be the length of the contract that he is going to want and the Brewers are not doing him any favors by pitching him and adding to his pitch count when the game is essentially over. I would take the Sheetz and Gagne money and try to re-sign him if the length of his contract demands were not as long as they are going to be.

Don't worry about the typos:wink2:

Wedge on Peralta: 'He's our shortstop'

Chuck Crow / Plain Dealer

Indians shortstop Jhonny Peralta will not be moving to third base anytime soon.

Seattle -- GM Mark Shapiro and manager Eric Wedge still think Jhonny Peralta is their shortstop for today and the immediate future.

When second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera was sent to Class AAA Buffalo, N.Y., on June 9 and played mostly shortstop, it was speculated a change was coming. Cabrera is a natural shortstop and Peralta has played third base in the minors and the Arizona Fall League.

Other factors included second baseman Josh Barfield, currently on the disabled list, being ready to play in the second half and a third base situation featuring free-agent-to-be Casey Blake and Andy Marte, who is out of options.

Wedge understands the speculation, but when asked if he and Shapiro are in agreement that Peralta will stay at shortstop for the foreseeable future, he said Sunday morning: "He's our shortstop. I don't see us making any change anytime soon."

Lee mows down Mariners for 13th win

The Indians' Cliff Lee pitched a complete game 11-hitter Sunday to help the Tribe beat the Mariners in Seattle, 6-2.Seattle -- Cliff Lee doesn't like off days during the season. Enforced rest goes against his nature. Delete to Seattle -- Cliff Lee doesn't like off days during the season. Enforced rest goes against his nature.

"If it was up to me, I'd bang all the days off if we could," said Lee, "but I know the position players need them."

Manager Eric Wedge feels differently. So after Lee started the All-Star Game on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, pitching two scoreless innings, Wedge gave him four days off before his first start of the second half.
The start came Sunday and Lee, rested and efficient, pitched the Indians to a 6-2 victory over Seattle at Safeco Field. After losing 10 straight games, the Indians have won six of their past seven.

"It's fun to catch Cliff," said catcher Kelly Shoppach. "He's been able to throw all his pitches for strikes. He always makes me look like I'm calling the right pitch."

Lee (13-2, 2.29 ERA) scattered 11 hits in his second complete game of the season. The 11 hits -- six coming after the sixth inning -- didn't bother him.

Cleveland Indians stay hot, beat the Los Angeles Angels, 5-2

Hot Tribe stops first-place Angels
Tuesday, July 22, 2008 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter

Anaheim, Calif. -- The last time Paul Byrd faced the Angels, he allowed three homers and six runs in three innings. It was April and the season was still young and full of promise for the Indians.
The promise long ago turned to dust, but the thing about baseball is that the games must be played no matter how many dreams have been crushed or realized along the way.
Monday night it was the Indians who hit the homers and Byrd who kept the ball inside Angel Stadium in a 5-2 victory over the team with the best record in the big leagues. Byrd went 5 1/3 innings for only his fourth victory of the season and Andy Marte, Casey Blake and Jhonny Peralta homered.

Cleveland Indians' Fausto Carmona expected to rejoin team and pitch Saturday

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter

Anaheim, Calif. -- Fausto Carmona is expected to rejoin the rotation and start against the Twins on Saturday at Progressive Field.
Carmona, who has been on the disabled list since May 24 with a strained left hip, joined the Indians on Monday at Angel Stadium after throwing a rehab game for Class AA Akron on Saturday. He was scheduled to throw a bullpen session Monday, which would have put him in line to start Friday against the Twins.
Manager Eric Wedge and pitching coach Carl Willis decided to have Carmona throw today so he'll be in line to start Saturday. This way they're able to place the right-handed Carmona between left-handers Cliff Lee and Jeremy Sowers.

Cleveland Indians not likely to spend much on free agency this off-season

The Indians certainly don't have a history of signing big-name, big-cost free agents and and it's unlikely to change this off-season
Tuesday, July 22, 2008 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter

Anaheim, Calif. -- For a team such as the Indians, free agency can be a risky venture. GM Mark Shapiro is on record as saying it should be the last resort when it comes to building a team.
The Indians' 25-man roster offers a hint of how management feels about the process. Paul Byrd, David Dellucci, Rafael Betancourt, Casey Blake, Matt Ginter, Masa Kobayashi and Juan Rincon are their only free agents. Betancourt, Blake, Ginter and Rincon arrived cheaply on minor-league deals.
Byrd is in the final year of a $21.5 million deal. He produced winning seasons in 2006 and 2007, including two postseason victories last year. Byrd went into Monday night's game against the Angels with a 3-10 record this year.

Indians stay hot after return from All-Star break
Tuesday, July 22, 2008
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ANAHEIM, Calif. Andy Marte, Casey Blake and Jhonny Peralta hit home runs and the Cleveland Indians beat the Los Angeles Angels, 5-2, on Monday night, snapping the AL West leaders' five-game winning streak.

Paul Byrd (4-10) allowed a run and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings for his first victory since June 6. He was 0-5 with a 7.76 ERA in his previous six starts.

The former Angels right-hander came in 1-8 with a 6.94 ERA on the road. The last time he pitched at Angel Stadium, on April 9, he retired nine of 16 batters and gave up three homers in a 9-5 loss.

Byrd worked with runners on base in five of the first six innings Monday, stranding five in scoring position.

:slappy: Marte hits a home run
It's about time... a long time. Is he up to 3 RBIs yet for this season. I just don't understand what they are doing between him and Blake and what about Garko. Someone needs to make some type of decision. We are only 11 games out and moving up fast:wink2:

Now that is good to know. It certainly does give me a lot of hope for next season:(

they are trying to give marte as much PT as possible to see if he can handle being the 3rd baseman next year, while at the same time keeping blake in the lineup to maximize his value to potential trade partners.

ryan garko has been a total flop this season. it wouldn't surprise me if he was off the roster next year.

As they should be, I just wish they had gone ahead and did it about 6 weeks earlier when the season was clearly in the tank. I was sick of seeing him sit on the bench with a .120 BA.

Blake, for all the flack he gets, has been a solid member of this team for 5+ years. We're probably not gonna get a lot for him in return, but I'm interested to see what we can get for him. He could be a valuable piece on a contender in September and October.

He's one of the most frustrating players I've seen on the Tribe in some time. He'll disappear for weeks at a time, then blow up for a 5 RBI game or hit a key HR out of nowhere. I'd expect them to keep him around another year though. Who else is gonna play 1st next year? Blake is likely gone. Hafner can't play in the field and is better suited at DH. Maybe Aubrey gets another shot in the coming weeks. Shoppach has handled the catching duties pretty well full-time, maybe Victor moves to 1B to lessen the toll catching takes on his body. LaPorta could concievably move to 1B and be ready sometime next season. Who knows.

not the least bit shocking
Nope, as long as the Dolans and Shapiro are calling the shots, we're never gonna sign anything more than the Dellucci's and Borowski's of the world. That's why it's important to improve the scouting and drafting in the organization.
