Indians Tidbits (2008 season)

Okay, I can't help it, I can't stay away. I'm weak and love a good trainwreck too much.

Anybody else find it absolutely hysterical that when the bats finally string together a few good games, the pitching goes right in the tank? I wonder if this is Willis' way of paying back Shelton for leaving him hanging all year.

The non-stop roster shuffles will continue to stifle any hope of developing chemistry (which is one of the reasons for the teams success in '05 & '07). Westbrook cannot seem to stay healthy anymore which is always bad for a pitcher in his 30's. C.C. seems unable to come around. He follows one or two good starts with 2-3 awful ones and his trade value is dropping before our eyes. I'm just glad that they were unable to extend him. The bullpen is a patchwork mess. Betancourt is a one man rally-monkey. Perez and Kobayashi have been solid, if inconsistent, but the rest are scrubs. We'll see what Bauer can do I guess. Just a big mess. Time to rebuild...again.

Time to rebuild...again
Whatever happened to the five-year plan or was last year the 5th year of the plan I would not put too much faith in Bauer if he pitched for Texas last year and they did not keep him. Oh my!

Correction: It was thought that the Indians didn't immediately option Jensen Lewis to Buffalo after Tuesday's game because they were thinking about going with an extra pitcher. Turns out they were worried that Rafael Betancourt may have been headed to the disabled list with a stiff back.
Betancourt, however, warmed up Wednesday and felt fine.
They should have put him on the DL last night the way that Milton Bradley handled him.

Dispatch

Several teams are watching the Cleveland Indians and waiting: If they fall much further out of the American League Central race, free agent-to-be C.C. Sabathia is expected to be available, and no one wants to be late to the sale if that happens.

The Indians don't want to trade their star pitcher if they don't have to, and they won't if they stay close. But the sides haven't negotiated since February, and if it's obvious Sabathia is leaving, the Tribe won't hang onto him hoping for a change of heart.

If you believe in statistical trends, the Indians might be close to being out of it.

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark recently reported that in the wild-card era, only 13 of 104 teams that have made the playoffs had losing records at the end of May. The other 91 playoff teams were better than .500 heading into June.

Indians draft player who was charged with burglary and grand larceny

They've scouted him since he was a junior in high school and have a top-ranking staffer who knows his college coach well. That's why, despite an off-the-field transgression that might have chased away other major-league clubs, the Indians selected infielder Lonnie Chisenhall with their first pick (29th overall) in the first round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft on Thursday. ''He's a guy we've targeted for a very long time,'' said Brad Grant, the Indians' first-year director of amateur scouting. ''We've got a lot of history with Lonnie.'' Chisenhall, 19, ranked the 74th-best player overall in Baseball America's draft preview, was originally drafted out of North Carolina's West Carteret High School in the 11th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2006. He turned down his initial opportunity to play professionally so he could suit up for the University of South Carolina. His stay with the Gamecocks didn't last long, however. As conference play got under way, Chisenhall was arrested, charged with burglary and grand larceny and dismissed from the team. Despite the serious off-the-field incident, the Indians -- an organization known for preferring high character over pure talent -- insist they did their homework on Chisenhall.

Up 4-2 on Detroit in the 8th. Talk about your epic flops. At least we ain't the Tigers.

I should probably shut my mouth seeing as they're into out bullpen now. I'm not sure what's more dangerous...leaving Byrd out there for the 8th, or going to the pen. :!

Borowski is an amazing 3/3 in Saves with a 0.0 ERA in 5 IP since he got off the DL
Yep. He's the same old JoeBo in that he's still allowing guys to get on base, but now he's not grooving meatballs to watch sailing over the fence like in April. He's definately a step up from Betancourt/Kobayashi (can't believe I typed that).

At least the bats have improved from deplorable to mediocre in the last couple weeks. Still not enough IMO to hope to compete this season, but at least a slight improvement. I'm still baffled by C.C.'s continued problems, and the injuries to Jake in Fausto are not good. Unfortunately, those injuries are timed right with Cliff Lee coming back to earth, and Byrd is still spotty, even after a very good performance tonight.

I cannot get over how bad Detroit is. I mean, as bad as things are in Cleveland, and they're bad, at least we don't have an absurd payroll of underachievers/injured stars like they do so far this year.

 you are right, the Indians have been a circus, but at least they didint go acquire a bunch of high priced vetrans in the offseason only to end up being an embarrassment

INDIANS INSIDER

Cleveland Indians will reveal pitcher Jake Westbrook's elbow injury today
Saturday, June 07, 2008

Detroit- The Indians know what's wrong with right-hander Jake Westbrook's right elbow, but aren't going to reveal it until today.
"I will confirm that Jake saw Dr. Lewis Yocum on Friday," said GM Mark Shapiro. "I will confirm the we have a clear diagnosis of his elbow. We will not say anymore until Saturday."

Westbrook was examined by Yocum, one of the country's experts on the care and repair of pitchers' elbows, Friday in Los Angeles. He was accompanied by Lonnie Soloff, Indians head athletic trainer. Soloff traveled to Los Angeles after the Indians finished a four-game series Thursday night in Arlington, Texas.

Contrite Chisenhall eager to join Tribe, says he'll overcome troubled year

Indians top draft pick Lonnie Chisenhall was forthright on Friday about his conviction for burglary and grand larceny this year, saying he was a "dumb kid" when it happened. He said he encouraged scouts and team executives this spring to get to know him.

"I thought it was better that if the teams just met with me and sat down and had a one-on-one conversation, they'd learn a lot about me," he said in a conference call from his home in Newport, N.C. "I don't want to call it an immature mistake because I was 18, and I was charged as an adult. It's something I've learned from. If they meet me, I think they realize it was a one-time mistake."

Chisenhall, a 19-year-old shortstop and third baseman, was the Indians' first-round pick (29th overall) Thursday out of Pitt Community College in North Carolina. He was kicked off South Carolina's team last year after his arrest. He and another USC player, Nick Fuller, were charged with stealing a TV and a video game system, according to published reports.
