Indians take on another big-money roster

The mission statement isn't lost on anyone in an Indians uniform. Walk through the clubhouse, and Mark Shapiro's blueprint is easily found. "To sustain a championship-caliber team that competes - passionately, relentlessly and professionally - and in the process makes a positive statement about its collective vision and core values." The real mission for the Tribe general manager is opening up the Dolan family's safe, digging up coffee cans and spending money in a mid-market city as if a U.S. mint press sits next to the clubhouse.

Starting to get it

BOSTON -- Two years ago, when C.C. Sabathia was on the cusp of, but not quite all the way to being an elite No. 1 starter, he and Indians general manager Mark Shapiro had a conversation.

''I told him, ?C' you've done everything a No. 1 has to do but pitch 225 innings and pitch Game 1 of a postseason series,'' Shapiro said.

Tonight, in storied Fenway Park, Sabathia, with 246 innings behind him, will pitch his second Game 1 of a postseason series in eight days.

''Now,'' Shapiro said, ''There is no definition of a No. 1 starter that he has failed to achieve.''

Pitching was personified in two days

BOSTON -- They were probably the two most bizarre back-to-back games of the Indians' season.

On July 24 at Jacobs Field the Red Sox beat the Indians 1-0.

On July 25 the Indians beat the Red Sox 1-0.

In the first game, C.C. Sabathia pitched seven innings and allowed one run on five hits. He had seven strikeouts, but he was out-pitched by Daisuke Matsuzaka, who pitched seven shutout innings.

The next day, Fausto Carmona pitched eight shutout innings and beat Josh Beckett.

Be afraid, be very afraid
Indians fans have reasons to fret

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

You think Cleveland Indians fans are riding high into Boston? Of course we are. Bring on the Red Sox.
Still, despite our anticipation of tonight's American League Championship Series opener in Fenway Park, a Godzilla-sized boogeyman lurks under our beds. In our closets, hiding behind our "It's Tribe Time Now!"

Armed and ready: Indians, Red Sox feature quality starters, so runs might be in short supply

BOSTON -- Of the many memorable images from the Cleveland Indians' division series win over the New York Yankees, perhaps the most lasting will be pitcher Fausto Carmona on the mound, bugs swarming, his eyes on catcher Victor Martinez.

A mature C.C. Sabathia has grown into the role of Indians pitching ace

Yogi Berra, noted baseball philosopher, once said, "When you come to a fork in the road, take it."
Funny guy, Yogi.
C.C. Sabathia was robbed at gunpoint in a Cleveland hotel room late in the evening of May 16, 2002 by former Cleveland State basketball players Damon Stringer and Jamaal Harris after a night of partying. The next morning, he stared at Yogi's fork through bloodshot eyes. No laughter could be heard.

Good article. You don't see too many of those out of Paul Hoynes.

Red Sox 10, Indians 3: Ace is a wild card

C.C. Sabathia walked three and hit a batter during Boston's four-run third inning. He gave up eight runs in 4 1/3 innings.

BOSTON -- C.C. Sabathia sat in the dugout last night with his head in his hands, his eyes watery, trying to comprehend what he just endured. It was a strange and uncomfortable sight for the Cleveland Indians.
For six months, Sabathia seemed completely in control, able to throw all of his pitches for strikes and willing to shrug off his teammates' slumps and go pitch for pitch with the best in the American League. When the stakes were highest, though, he seemed anxious, even nervous. The Boston Red Sox showed no mercy.
Sabathia allowed eight runs in 4 1/3 innings, and the Indians lost 10-3 in Game 1 of the American League championship series.

Indians notebook: Ortiz, Ramirez continue to intimidate at the plate

Travis Hafner watches his home run to right field in the first inning off Josh Beckett.

BOSTON -- Manny Ramirez walked to the plate twice last night with the bases loaded. He walked to first base each time. The Cleveland Indians were unwilling or unable to challenge him. Either way, it is a bad sign.
Ramirez and David Ortiz, the twin engine that drives the Boston Red Sox offense, reached base every time they came to the plate last night in a 10-3 win over the Indians. They have reached base 29 times in 36 plate appearances in four games this postseason.

Indians missing one of two aces up their sleeve

- With any luck, Game 1 could have some redeeming value after all.
But only if it ends all future arguments for C.C. Sabathia as the postseason cavalry. He hasn't pitched well enough on his own turn, let alone anyone else's.
Better yet, what happened Fri day night at Fenway Park in a 10-3 loss to the Red Sox should start the argument for not pitching Sabathia in a tone-setting Game 1 of the World Series if the Indians make it that far.
"I wasn't myself," Sabathia said.
Sure enough. He was Jeremy Sowers.

HOW THEY SCORED
Carmona's job just got harder

Saturday, October 13, 2007

Boston
-- Try to imagine what it will be like for Fausto Carmona in Game 2 tonight. He'll pitch at Fenway Park for the first time since 2006, when he failed twice as a closer -- blowing two saves in three days. His opponent will be Curt Schilling, who has a 9-2 record and 1.86 ERA in the postseason, including seven scoreless innings against the Angels in the division series. Then consider that the Indians just don't want to come home down, 0-2, in this best-of-seven AL Championship Series. C.C. Sabathia put the pressure directly on Carmona with a terrible performance in Friday's 10-3 loss.
Not only was he shelled for eight runs in 4 1/3 innings, his meltdown allowed Boston to use ace Josh Beckett only six innings. That means Beckett can possibly come back on three days' rest -- something he has done before with success when he shut out the Yankees in Game 6 of the 2003 World Series for Florida. Friday, Beckett threw only 80 pitches and should be rested if needed. No question, the opener was an utter disaster for the Tribe.

Agreed. While last night was disappointing, we couldn't have reasonably expected more than a split. And the way Carmona has been pitching lately, I feel good going into tonight.
