Byrd finishes off Yankees; Tribe pitchers jolt New York Selection of Shoppach proven to be wise
By Sheldon Ocker Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Tuesday, Oct 09, 2007
NEW YORK: So it all came down to the Indians' superior pitching: C.C. Sabathia, Fausto Carmona and, of course, Paul Byrd.
You probably thought Byrd was the weak link in the cast-iron chain. Think again. Byrd was the winning pitcher in a 6-4 victory over the New York Yankees on Monday night at Yankee Stadium, propelling the Tribe into the American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox that begins Friday at Fenway Park.

Indians Eliminate Yankees With 6-4 Win

By RONALD BLUM
AP Baseball Writer
NEW YORK ? Once Grady Sizemore hit a leadoff home run, the Cleveland Indians were headed to the AL championship series while the New York Yankees were braced for a showdown with their boss.
Paul Byrd and the Indians bullpen closed out New York 6-4 in Game 4 Monday night, completing the third straight first-round debacle for the Yankees, one that might cost manager Joe Torre his job.

Sizemore, Indians Eliminate Yankees

By RONALD BLUM
AP Baseball Writer
NEW YORK ? As Joe Borowski and the Cleveland Indians celebrated out on the infield, Joe Torre walked up the tunnel from the New York Yankees dugout toward the clubhouse ? perhaps for the final time. Thoughts of another season ending early went through his mind.
"It's such an empty feeling," he said. "You think it's going to last forever."

Wedge keeps ace in his hand Manager not willing to put Sabathia in harm's way by having him pitch Game 4 on short rest
By Sheldon Ocker Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Tuesday, Oct 09, 2007

NEW YORK: The question persisted, and the answer was the same: no, a thousand times no.
Why wouldn't Indians manager Eric Wedge start his ace, C.C. Sabathia, on the most important night in the Indians' season, Game 4 of the American League Division Series, Monday night at Yankee Stadium?
Over and over, media from Northeast Ohio and New York plus other outposts around the country posed the same question. Yes, Sabathia would have had to pitch on short rest, but Yankees manager Joe Torre was allowing Chien-Ming Wang to start Monday after being idle for only three days rather than four.

Byrd gives Indians exactly what they need in Game 4

10/9/2007, 1:04 a.m. EDTBy JAY COHEN
The Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) ? Paul Byrd's teammates consider him the Professor because of all the time he spends with his laptop in the clubhouse studying scouting reports.
All that attention to detail paid off for the Professor on Monday night.
Byrd pitched into the sixth inning and helped lead the Cleveland Indians past the New York Yankees 6-4 in the clinching Game 4 of the AL playoffs.

Mighty Yanks can not stop Tribe juggernaut
Tuesday, October 9, 2007
By Andy Call
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

NEW YORK The game progressed slowly, painfully so at times. But, as each minute passed, one could almost feel the final few ounces of pessimism being sapped out of Cleveland sports fans.

Their manager didn't pick the wrong guys. Their pitcher wasn't lobbing slop over the plate for hitters to crush. Their batters weren't wimping out in key situations. Their team wasn't losing simply because its aggregate salary was one-third of its opponent.

And, at 11:41 p.m. Monday, the Indians - no, we're not making this up - sent the mighty New York Yankees home for the winter with a 6-4 victory in Game 4 of the Division Series at Yankee Stadium

By JIM INGRAHAM, Morning Journal Writer
10/09/2007

NEW YORK -- Pitching wins. Pitching won.

This ain't brain surgery.

The pitching-rich Indians have ridden their arms into the American League Championship Series for the first time since 1998.

The Indians punched their ticket to an American League Championship Series showdown with Boston by beating the Yankees, 6-4, last night to win the best-of-five Division Series, 3 games to 1.

The Indians and Red Sox will now meet to decide the American League representative in the World Series. The best-of-seven League Championship Series begins with Game 1 Friday night in Boston.

Indians closer Joe Borowski reacts after the final out against the Yankees is in the books.

NEW YORK -- It takes a lot for Yankee Stadium to go quiet, even briefly. Fifty-six thousand baseball fans, raised on the adrenaline and anger of city life, can produce intimidating noise when spurred by a common cause.
