Laffey could be promoted; Miller receiving elbow treatment
By Anthony Castrovince / MLB.com
CLEVELAND -- One of the Indians' top pitching prospects is in Cleveland. Another might be on his way.

The Indians are skirting rumors and speculation that left-hander Aaron Laffey is on deck to be promoted to the big leagues from Triple-A Buffalo. In the meantime, the club has confirmed that top pitching prospect Adam Miller is at Jacobs Field this week, getting treatment and evaluation for what is being called "mild elbow soreness."

Well, C.C. pitched a good game after a few bad starts and now the bats have gone dead.:smash:

This team has been mediocre all month going 7-9 since winning six in a row heading into July. I'm all for bringing up Laffey to shake things up in the rotation. Westbrook and Lee have been pathetic all year. Thing is, who do you bump? Westbrook just signed an extension, so I'd guess Lee. Lee has been especially awful, though Westbrook hasn't been much better. Byrd has at least been serviceable.

Something needs to wake these guys up, because with the Yankees surging, we may end up on the outside looking in again like '05.

Side note: Anybody else getting concerned with Miller's arm problems?

laffey is going to the pen. the indians are going to dfa cabrera, hope he clears waivers then send him back to buffalo to figure out how to throw a strike that isn't a belt high middle of the plate 90 mph fastball.

as for tonight's game, this offense is a joke at times. trot nixon provides nothing. any other outfielder catches the ball he didn't get to. his bat is also pathetic. he couldn't hit crabs if he fell into paris hilton's snatch.

I see. I figured it would be hard to demote Westbook or Lee to the pen. Another lefty in the pen is always a plus, but ultimately the rotation will be our downfall if those two don't start pitching at a major leaue level.

Sadly, it's about time. I hope he can clear waivers too. I was very high on him, but he's been absolutely putrid since his fast start. If he does clear the wire, hopefully he can get his confidence back at AAA.

Agree 100%. Nixon is useless. I don't understand how all of our bats develop holes in them at the same time so often. Pronk is still struggling after showing a brief sign of life last week.

Like I said, these guys have been mediocre at best the past 3 weeks, and some sort of shakeup is needed. Otherwise, we'll be done in September again. Very frustrating.

BREAKING NEWS...

Fausto Carmona is amazing.

I am glad that I was wrong about this kid. He has proven that he is a SP and a filthy one at that. Can you imagine where this team would be if Fausto had not stepped up like this? With Sowers shitting the bed, Lee being all over the place and Byrd being up and down? We'd be looking up at the Twins and Detroit probably. What an incredibly pitched last couple games by both teams. Tough loses for both CC and Beckett. If Cliff can get on track and Hafner can get back to being Hafner, we could see this team playing in October.

Indians 1, Red Sox 0: Carmona building name for himself

Thursday, July 26, 2007 3:38 AM
By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CLEVELAND -- Fausto Carmona threw a 92 mph sinking fastball that appeared to nip the far corner of the strike zone. Manny Ramirez did not swing, and home plate umpire Ed Rapuano did not call it a strike. In such instances, the star slugger often gets the benefit of the doubt.

So Carmona smiled, grabbed the ball again and fired a 96 mph fastball that clearly hit the corner of the strike zone. Ramirez watched it whiz past and immediately dropped his bat and helmet. The kid left no doubt.

Shutout in favor of Tribe this time

Carmona, Gutierrez lead win over Red Sox

Cleveland Indians shortstop Jhonny Peralta (2) and right fielder Franklin Gutierrez celebrate after the Indians' 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox in a baseball game Wednesday, July 25, 2007, in Cleveland. Gutierrez's third-inning home run was the difference in the game. More Photos
CLEVELAND - That would be 18 and counting. Scoreless innings for Fausto Carmona, that is.
Scoreless is becoming a continuing theme at Jacobs Field this week. Tuesday night, the Red Sox shut out the Indians 1-0, and Wednesday night, the Tribe turned the tables, with Franklin Gutierrez's solo homer accounting for the game's only run.
That's where Carmona (13-4, 3.31 ERA) comes in. He delivered eight scoreless innings, allowing just four hits (three never left the infield) and two walks while striking out six.
So what else is new? Interrupted by a glitch or two along the way, Carmona has been dominating opposing lineups throughout the season.
``Fausto is getting to be very mature,'' Gutierrez said. ``He knows what he's doing. He's really quiet, concentrating on the game.''

Wins make trades tricky for Tribe

By Terry Pluto

CLEVELAND - Since Mark Shapiro became the Indians' general manager in November 2001, all his midseason trades have one thing in common...
Goodbye, veterans; hello, prospects.
They can't do that again. They might have to trade one of their young outfielders such as Franklin Gutierrez, Trevor Crowe or Ben Francisco.
Gutierrez is the most valuable to the Tribe, because he's superb defensively and can play all three outfield positions. That's also why he'd be so hard to let go. He slammed his sixth homer of the season Wednesday -- giving him six in 99 at-bats since being promoted from Class AAA Buffalo.
Or they might have to give up some of their prized pitchers in the low minor leagues. They will have to risk ``overpaying'' to make a deal that helps the team now.

Indians report

Red Sox fans embarrass Tribe

Vocal Boston followers journey to Jacobs Field

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - If Indians partisans don't like Boston Red Sox fanatics invading their Jacobs Field space, they have two choices: Buy more tickets or live with it.
But does it reflect badly on Northeast Ohio to be outshouted (and maybe outnumbered) in your own ballpark?
``That's a judgment call,'' said Trot Nixon, who used to play in Boston. ``You have to decide that from the fans' perspective. If they think it looks bad... '' and Nixon's voice trailed off.
C.C. Sabathia called the presence of thousands of vocal Red Sox fans ``embarrassing.''
``Yes, it does'' bother him, he said.
``This is a big homestand for us, and it's a little embarrassing. I was here when we sold out all the time, so it's embarrassing to hear people yelling `You' when Kevin Youkilis comes up. It's a little disappointing.''
Jake Westbrook echoed Sabathia's feelings.
``It bugs me for the fact that it seems like there are more Red Sox fans here than Indians fans,'' he said. ``There are so many of them, it kind of overwhelms you. It's up to our fans to make a stand and support us more.

INDIANS INSIDER
Indians' top pitching prospect Adam Miller in Cleveland, but hurt

Wednesday, July 25, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Adam Miller finally made it to Cleveland. Unfortunately, he's not here to pitch.
Miller, the Indians' top pitching prospect, was diagnosed with inflammation in the right elbow and will not throw for the next 10 to 14 days. He'll spend that time getting treatment at Jacobs Field.
After winning 15 games last year at Class AA Akron and pitching 14 scoreless innings in spring training, the Indians thought Miller could help them this year. His timing has not been the best.
When Jeremy Sowers struggled through the first 10 weeks of the season, the Indians wanted to promote Miller from Class AAA Buffalo. He strained the ligament in the middle finger of his right hand and was shut down for six weeks.
Miller returned in late June. He made his first two appearances as a reliever. The Indians talked about using him in the bullpen down the stretch.
When Miller rejoined Buffalo's rotation, he was hit hard. He felt pain in his right elbow in starts on July 14 and July 19. The Indians brought him to Cleveland on Monday. He underwent an MRI in the morning and was examined by Dr. Mark Schickendantz, Indians head physician, during Monday's game.
Bart Swain, Indians director of media relations, said the Indians do not believe Miller's elbow injury is connected to his finger injury. Miller injured his elbow in spring training in 2005 and made only 15 starts that season.

Cleveland Indians GM Shapiro in Buffalo as trade deadline nears

Thursday, July 26, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro is in Buffalo watching the Class AAA Bisons. It's probably not a coincidence that left-hander Jeremy Sowers started Wednesday and left-hander Aaron Laffey is scheduled to start tonight.
When general managers visit their farm clubs right before the trading deadline, it's usually to determine who's going to get traded or who's going to be promoted in case a trade creates an opening on the 25-man roster.
Tuesday is the deadline for making trades without waivers. Teams can continue to make trades, but must get waivers on players. A player must be acquired before the Aug. 31 deadline to be eligible for the postseason.
