Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

I see the what we have been fearing finally happened, and Borowski imploded today. 2/3 of an inning and 6 ER's? We finally get some kind of quality appearance from a starter (Carmona of all people) and our closer blows a 4 run lead?? I hope Wedge has a short leash on Borowski. Betancourt may serve as a better closer for this team. Man, I never thought I would say it, but I wish Wicky were still here!!!

Devil Rays 6, Indians 5
Tribe falls victim to own mistakes

Lapses on defense let Byrd down; Shoppach easily thrown out at plate

By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - The Indians got away with shaky defense and bad base running to slip past Tampa Bay 4-3 Friday night at Tropicana Field.
They were not so lucky Saturday night, as the Devil Rays eked out a 6-5 win, mostly because of two shoddy plays in the field and questionable judgment in sending a runner to the plate.
``A couple of plays really made the difference in the game,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ``Paul Byrd threw the ball well all night long. He deserved better. But we weren't able to do what we needed to do behind him.''
Byrd's misfortune won't show up in the box score, but the reality is he was charged with six earned runs, yet three were tainted.

St. Petersburg, Fla.- It's been hard to find something to dislike about Grady Sizemore's game over the last two years.
Those bent toward criticism, however, could point to his strikeouts. Sizemore struck out 153 times in 655 at-bats last year and 132 times in 640 at-bats in 2005. It constitutes a lot of swinging and missing for a leadoff hitter.
Manager Eric Wedge and General Manager Mark Shapiro are on record as saying they are not concerned, but Sizemore went into Saturday night's game against Tampa Bay with only nine strikeouts and a team-high 13 walks.

CLEVELAND INDIANS
Indians' problem isn't just a closer

Saturday, April 21, 2007 Bill Livingston
Plain Dealer Columnist
In the infancy of baseball, a player named Bob Ferguson, by reason of his defensive prowess, earned the remarkable nickname "Death to Flying Things."
The left side of the Indians' infield, composed of Andy Marte and Jhonny Peralta, sometimes makes the case for the monicker "Life to Rolling Things."
They're a bigger problem than closer Joe Borowski.

Indians 6, Devil Rays 4

Garko's 3-run homer makes up for mistakes

Outburst in 9th-inning comes in time to avoid painful loss to D-Rays

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - For the Indians these days, success or failure can turn on one swing of the bat, a hasty overthrow or a pitch in the dirt -- maybe all three in the same game.
The Tribe was up, the Tribe was down and the Tribe was up again in subduing the Devil Rays 6-4 Sunday at Tropicana Field.

This time a strikeout is not good enough

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - INDIANS NOTEBOOK
Brendan Harris of the Devil Rays swung and missed at Jake Westbrook's pitch in the dirt in the fourth inning for strike three, but reached first on the wild pitch.
Victor Martinez argued heatedly that he tagged Harris, but umpire Brian Runge didn't buy it.
``I got him somewhere on the leg,'' Martinez said. ``I could feel it.''
Martinez should have thrown to first, but was reluctant because a runner was on third.

Cleveland's Josh Barfield, right, throws to first base after forcing Minnesota's Alexi Casilla at second. Jhonny Peralta backs up the play in the first inning.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ryan Garko drove in the go-ahead run for the second straight game, blooping a soft single that sent the Cleveland Indians to a 7-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins last night.

Travis Hafner, who matched his career high with four hits, started the 12th with a walk against Jesse Crain (0-1). After Victor Martinez singled, Garko's hit scored Hafner, making it 4-3.
Jason Michaels followed Garko's single with an RBI double, and Shin-Soo Choo added a two-run single off Joe Nathan with the bases loaded to break it open. It took the Twins seven batters to get an out in the inning.
Roberto Hernandez (2-1) picked up the victory with two scoreless innings, highlighting an excellent night by the Cleveland bullpen.

Marte placed on disabled list

Hamstring injury puts Blake at third base, gives Choo a chance in outfield

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

MINNEAPOLIS - Andy Marte's injury has triggered a realignment of the Indians' infield and outfield.
Shin-Soo Choo was called up from Triple-A Buffalo Monday, and Marte was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring, suffered when he ran out a ground ball on Sunday.
Marte's absence creates a vacuum at third base, a position that will be filled by Casey Blake, who mostly has been playing right field against left-handed pitchers.
When Blake wasn't in right field, he generally played first base, which put lefty Trot Nixon in right against right-handers.

Choo hears boos for wrong reason

Tuesday, April 24, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Minneapolis -- Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, promoted to the big leagues Monday by the Indians, has heard boos before.
Last week, the boos took on a disturbing tone. When Class AAA Buffalo, the Indians' top farm club, played in Toledo, fans apparently associated him with Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech senior who killed 32 of his schoolmates before killing himself April 16.
"Some fans said bad things," said Choo before Monday's game. "It's pretty close to my name. My name is spelled Choo, and his name is Cho."

An awesome couple of wins. After the debacle in NY, the Tribe came right back and won. That reminds me of 2005 when they seemed unflappable.

Great job by the Bullpen last night.

It's nice to see a couple of wins, and it's early, but there are some unsettling things with this team.

1) When Blake plays first, the entire infield sans Victor is basically batting under .200
2) These guys have the foot speed of a beer league softball team
3) These guys could take defensive lessons from a beer league softball team
4) Beer league softball teams hit far better with runners on base
5) There are a couple of definite holes in the bullpen (although they did a nice job yesterday)
6) Andy Marte is overmatched at this level
7) If Peralta ever sees a pitch that is not a low and away breaking ball, shame on the AL
8) Trot Nixon is being held together by duct tape and superglue
9) Too many K's
10) No plus throwing arms in the OF

The good:
1) No one has run away with the division out of the gates like the last 2 years
2) Travis Hafner is terrifying at the plate
3) No one is more fun to watch than Grady Sizemore
4) Bewtween the weather and the lack of true home games, the hitting should turn around
5) Based on ability to make soft tossing lefties look like Warren Spahn, I'm damn glad Sowers and Cliff Lee play for us. They'd go 8-o with a 1.47 ERA against us if they were Royals
6) KC is good enough to be a thorn in the rest of the division's side, not just ours
7) Starting pitching looks good, especially since Lee is coming back
8) CC looks like a bona fide ace so far
9) I've got a good feeling that Cleveland fans will love Barfield by the end of the season
10) Young players with experience mean a few guys could be entering thier primes simultaneously.
