Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

Do you think Grady could be a 30/30 guy? Or is that too much to expect in the power department from our leadoff guy??

Not at all he had 28 homeruns last seasons and could easily hit over 30 this year. He is going to be something special. I know the Indians gave him extension in the offseason but they need to re-extend that extension as soon as possible.

Definitely, we need to lock this kid up now. He plays the game like it's supposed to be played, hard nosed and balls to the wall one every play and every at bat. You'll never see him sandbag to first base. I hated it when they traded Colon to Montreal for him and Cliff Lee, but obviously this has turned out to be one of the best trades in Indians history. This rivals the deal to the Padres back in the early 90's with Joe Carter to the Padres for Carlos Baerga and Sandy Alomar. Who knows, it could prove to even be better than that.

Which made/makes you more nervous? When Wickman came in for a save when he was here or when Borowski comes in this year? At least with Wicky, he had a track record for us of getting the saves, Borowski doesn't yet IMO. So right now, when he comes out there I'm worried.
I'm more concerned about Hernandez coughing it up before we even get to Borowski, but no, I don't have a lot of confidence in him either. I'm hoping one of the younger guys can grow into that role early on if Borowski starts to struggle.

I'd say he's a shoe in for a 30-30 season, and frankly think he has 40-40 capability, but I don't think Wedge will turn him loose enough to get to 40 steals. SB's will drop further if he does indeed get to move down to the third spot.

I've been saying all along the bullpen is the key. If they are just adequate, I think we win the division. I'm happy to see Westbrook get the extension too. He's a very good middle of the rotation guy, and sinkerball pitchers with good command are an asset to any team so long as the INF defense is at least decent. Getting Barfield at 2B and Marte at 3rd are a big upgrade over what he was working with last season.

Indians sign Westbrook to 3-year extension

This is a great move by Shapiro/Dolan. They need to lock up guys like this. Jake has been a great workhorse for the Tribe and is an anchor on the rotation. Congrats Jake.

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Jake Westbrook signed a three-year, $33 million contract extension through 2010 on Friday with the Cleveland Indians, who locked up a key starter before possibly losing him as a free agent.
Westbrook would have been eligible for free agency following this season, his seventh since coming to Cleveland in a trade with the New York Yankees.

Mentioned that just above your post. Didn't even think about linking it though. But yeah, great move. Westbrook is gonna give you 200+ innings and be a solid #3 starter every year. With our improved IF defense, I think he's good for 15-17 wins with an ERA of 3.50 - 4.00 too.

My bad, my ADD is in full effect today and apparently I did not read your entire post. :bonk:

Is anyone else still trying to remain optimistic about Carmona? It seems that every opportunity they give him he fails, miserably. I realize he has some nasty stuff, but if he can't control it or get MLB hitters out, how does he help this team. I still remember the pain of watching him try to close games last year. I just can't see letting this kid continue to try to figure out his game in the starting rotation at this level. Send him to Buffalo and let him figure it out there. Seems like Carmona or Davis could use a shot at filling this spot in the rotation until Lee comes back, or what about Adam Miller? He is supposed to be the next big thing, bring him up and give him a shot.

Anthony Castrovince, of Indians.MLB.com, reports Cleveland Indians P Adam Miller went four innings and gave up no runs on three hits while striking out two Wednesday, March 14. Miller hasn't given up a run in nine innings pitched this spring.

I would like to see them give this kid a shot. They let Sowers get his shot and he has ran with it. Time to give Miller his go and let Carmona figure himself out on the farm.

Watching the game yesterday it looked a lot like the Carmona of last year. His inconsistency will hurt this team. For one batter, he can be dominant, even unhittable. Then he'll walk the next guy on 4 pitches, and serve up a homerun to the next batter.

I'm with you on giving Miller a chance. Hopefully Lee gets back quickly.

Also, 3 for 20 (yesterday) with runners in scoring position is not going to win us many games. Gotta bring that up.

You are definitely right about the RISP percentage issue, but I have far more faith in that improving than Carmona.

Hey look! No Hernandez, no Carmona, and the bullpen holds the lead! Right that down Wedgie.

Seriously, Hernandez needs to go, and they need to option Carmona down on the farm. His stuff is too nasty to let him get thrashed in the bigs and totally lose his confidence. Anybody Remember the Carmona who subbed for C.C. early last year? That's the guy we need. He just needs some time in Buffalo to rediscover some command and confidence.

carmona needs to be in the pen. he's proving more and more that he isn't consistent enough to pitch extended innings at this point. this was clearly evidenced by holding chicago's 1-4 at 0-9 at one point, while letting 6-9 go, ironically, 6-9 against him. he geared up and was stout against thome, konerko and dye, then got wild and was forced to come in the strike zone against the bottom of the order. once lee comes back, i think he'd be a very good set up man for borowski. he had an incredible run at that spot last year before moving to closer and going apescat.

We get one hit and still pull out a victory. I'll take it.

C.C. has been nasty so far.

Looks like C.C. is carrying a little extra lbs this year. It worries me when he gets bigger, just because he seems more at risk for injury and the injury bug has not been good to him over the years and many attribute that to his size. I agree that he has been excellent in his starts, I just worry about injury with him. They need to get him extended ASAP. I hear that Pronk does not want to do any negotiating during the season, which I never blame the guys for. I would not want those distractions either during the season, especially a guy as heady as Hafner is. I could see that really mucking him up. I just can't begin to think of the negative backlash that will ensue if they let any of these core guys go. I am still not happy about them trading Coco before last season. Marte could play out to be the next George Brett, but so far, he has not impressed me.
