Incest: Should it be a crime?

kinch

Wash me
A narrow topic for your consideration: the criminality of incest.

Is it the government's role to legislate against incest?

If so, is it a crime due to medical reasons, i.e., the increased possibility of genetic diseases or handicaps of the offspring?

If so again, then is it the government's role to also legislate against older women or the mentally disabled having children? What about those with known recessive genetic ailments who have partners with the same recessive gene?

Is incest the best?

Simply put, the government for and by the people want incest to be a crime.

I'm pretty sure all those opposed to it would have their reasons boil down to either the medical issues or the moral issues involved. Legislating morality is against what I personally believe, but I would fall firmly under the possible medical issues involved.

If so again, then is it the government's role to also legislate against older women or the mentally disabled having children? What about those with known recessive genetic ailments who have partners with the same recessive gene?

Now there we are kind of jumping to a different topic. Again this is more legislating morality than medically but, for a historical reference (and I wish something else came to mind) but this would be more like the attempts by the Nazis to create the "master race" by putting people together to make the "super humans" by combining their relative traits.

Is incest the best?

I didn't have any sisters, so I couldn't tell ya.....

I think I'll defer to Donny on this one.

pains me to say this but no, it probally shouldnt be illegal... if two consenting adults what to have sex... I suppose it should be their right.. IMO that is... eww... i have no sisters but yea, the idea is bizarre, but im sure the court of public opinion and ensuing humiliation would still be a decent deterrant... ugh..

Primarily because it's a cultural artifact....like eating horsemeat in the US.

Today our gene poll is diverse enough that the medical concerns are pretty much a non-issue...that being said I still think parent/progeny relationships should be strongly discouraged, for much the same reason as teacher/student ones.

Unfortunately America's past roll in eugenics is pretty damn despicable as well.

Actually I disagree, we we see an increase in genetic deformities today. That is why it is increasingly important to breed outside of the family. Genetic code has repititions to help out these losses of information. But if 2 people are missing the same information (siblings, parent-child) the likelyhood of the offspring missing all the required genetic information increases.

Odd, I was actually just reading a story regarding incest and the law. I have always been a person that feels "whatever you do in your bedroom is your business." However, Incest is dangerous, not to the people committing the act, but to the children they could produce. Knowingly having a child that has roughly a 50% chance to have permanent problems isn't fair to the child.

Currently there's a couple in Germany who are challenging the Incest laws because he was adopted and his sister was not, they met and fell in love. It's got the feel of the most deranged fairy tale ever, however, they have had 4 children, three of them taken away. It's an interesting story, and brings up some interesting points, but as I said, I just don't feel it's fair to a potential child.

BBC NEWS | Europe | Couple stand by forbidden love

"Medical research has shown that there is a higher risk of genetic abnormalities when close relatives have a child together. When siblings have children, there is a 50% chance that the child will be disabled," he said.

Patrick and Susan say they have no other choice but to fight the current law.

"I have read that some doctors claim that children born to siblings could be disabled, but what about disabled parents who have children, or older parents?" asked Patrick.

"People have said that our children are disabled, but that is wrong. They are not disabled," said Patrick.

"Eric, our eldest child, has epilepsy, but he was born two months premature, he also has learning difficulties. Our other daughter, Sarah, has special needs," Patrick said.

Alright... we can settle this pretty easily...

Just start posting pics of your sisters (or brothers for the girls and bicurious)... and.. then we'll vote.
