These are the times that try mens souls.
You are presently vilified by one of the worst smear campaigns I have ever seen against a public figure.
Taken at face value the ESPN the Magazine articles portray you at best as a naive and out-of-touch figure, unable to control the worst excesses of institutionalized transgressions against NCAA rules. At worst, they suggest you had a direct hand in many of the poor choices a misguided and bitter young man has made while bringing shame on a proud institution.
I for one do not believe these things. Moreover, I am not alone in making that assessment of ESPN's tawdry excuse for investigative journalism.
More important for you Coach Tressel is this.
You are not alone. We and many other Buckeye fans and OSU alumni believe that you are the best thing that has happened for OSU Football since the halcyon days of Woody Hayes.
We look at the contrast between your public persona, your well established good character, and the man portrayed in the ESPN articles, its clear who is wanting, not you but your accusers.
The saddest part of this is that the charges emanate from a young man who had the opportunity to bring much praise on himself in coming years, and much joy to the school I and many others love. Marvel as we did at his feats during his one year of wearing the Scarlet & Gray we cannot now excuse him for what he is doing to you and tOSU.
Forgive him - perhaps in time, but not today.
