Illinois Fighting Illini (you'll see)

It's always fun to go back and read old threads like this. Besides all of the wild Illini predictions from ThaKid and others, here are a couple of statements that in retrospect proved to be a little bit off the mark:

What is it with you and Zook? Are you getting paid to spin him up into a recruiting giant :wink2:

Let us just go through the list of prospects you gave.
2006 Class
Cumberland - All other things being equal, he who is visited last may have the edge. Plus, it isn't equal, there is more sizzle to Jeff getting the nod in Morgantown than in Illinois. We all wanted a qualified Cumberland here in Columbus, and I'm saddened that he has to go elsewhere. That said, I'd rather he find his home in Morgantown than in the Land of Lincoln if Ohio State is not to be part of his future.
Diauntae Morrow - 2* and not listing Illinois per scouts, stated High preference Purdue.

Chris Duvalt - same thing, 2* and not listing Illinois at scout, stated High preference none, visits listed W. Va this weekend.
Michael Crabtree - yes listed - but he isn't a 4* ranked player nationally, and his areas for improvement per scout outweigh his strengths. Clearly a 2* developmental project. Visiting Illinois 1/20 per scout
Kenny Britt - 3* recruit who visits Illinois last on the weekend you list (1/20). Could be Illinois is in the lead
Anthony Jones - 3* listed as visiting Illinois this weekend. Still has the Vols as the team to beat.
Ramone Johnson - 4* recruit per scout. #1 prospect in Illinois. This could be a very interesting test for Zook's ability to reel in the best local talent. Johnson visits Knoxville this weekend, and that Southern Charm can work magic on young men's minds. Besides which there is this
"Johnson reports a 2.3 GPA/September first-time ACT" which may be a harbinger of a failure to qualify.

Perhaps rivals has a more complete list of visit dates, but that seems a little strange

Sum and substance - the best two prospects in terms of likelihood seem to be Britt and Johnson - and that assumes the Vols don't press hard on Ramone. (For perspective, the Vols presently sport a pretty anemic class by their standards, and will be pushing strong to add quality.)

2007 Class - been there explained that before. Its all about the alphabet, and way too early to go into a Zook is the Big 10's greatest recruiter rant complete with gnashing of teeth and rending of cloth.

Crabtree was a two-time Biletnikoff winner and first-round draft pick....

id take zook over meyer

why not? meyer didnt do anything last year and this year he was EXTREMELY lucky to be in the national championship game. they choked a game away from auburn and while they made the plays i still call 2 blocked FGs especially a game winning one pretty lucky against a decent south carolina team. zook didnt do much at florida but most of those recruits that won that national championship for florida were from zook and when zook was there they were all young so he never got much of a chance. zook is showing he can bring a program around looking at the recruiting being astronomically up and on the basis of where illinois was last year as opposed to the last couple years. they took us right to the wire and in the second half even outplayed us. anybody that can take a mediocre team and do that against a team in the national championship game is obviously pretty good at coaching. he seems to do a good job in bringing them around. case wasnt any different in 05 when we played them. they played pretty well against us as we went into halftime with a 13-0 lead against a "nobody" team.
:crazy:Consider the source....

Please do save it, so when Illinois is 4-7 in 2012 we all can have a good laugh. My point was that while Illinois has some good years, they have never been consistent. I didn't feel like listing your entire history, but if you'd like feel free to check out your season-by-season history which lays out all the gory details, such as:

Your 10-2 season in 2001 was sandwiched between 5-6 and 5-7 seasons.

Your 10-2 season in 1989 was sandwiched between 6-5 and 8-4 seasons.

Your 10-2 season in 1983 was sandwiched between 7-5 and 7-4 seasons.

Your 8-1-1 season in 1963 was sandwiched between 2-7 and 6-3 seasons.

Sense a pattern here, Sparky? You have to go all the way back to 1950-1951 to find two consecutive seasons with 2 or less losses (7-2 and 9-0-1). So, regardless of how great your current recruiting classes may seem, you'll have to excuse my scepticism until you put together more than one or two solid seasons.
I'm updating this one for Sparky and Pookie....

Your 9-4 season in 2007 was sandwiched between 2-10 and 5-7 seasons.

Zook can offer immediate playing time and the promise of being an up and coming program/return to glory thing...circa Iowa 2 years ago, PSU last year, Georgia Tech this year. However, just like NCSU found out, that promise wears thin once coaching deficiencies are exposed.

RZ will will shine for a while...then likely flame out quickly.
Good call Grad.

no, I mean at one time you were ThaKid....and somebody was Gatorubet saying "Zook sucks, you'll see" and you were all "OMGORZERZ!!!111! ZOOK IS DA TROOF!!!!".
Thankfully - no.

You forget that I was here in Who Dat Country when the Zooker was announced, and fully familiar with him.

I said then that it was a face saving thing by Foley who had been turned down by several guys by then, and that it was not really a big risk because he (Zooker) was a fierce recruiter who would either do well and surprise us all - or bring in some studs for the guy after the guy after the legend to coach up.

I always thought that Zook talked like a cokehead on an espresso IV - very off-putting to me. :slappy:
