Illini receiver who broke teammate's jaw will play

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Jeff Cumberland and Mikel LeShoure got into it Saturday night, a few hours after Illinois' 27-24 victory over Iowa.

But Cumberland will be in uniform Saturday when the Illini take on Western Michigan at Ford Field in Detroit. And LeShoure is out indefinitely while the broken jaw he suffered in the altercation heals.
So go the vagaries of crime and punishment in college sports, where coaches so often are the investigator, judge and jury.

Coach Ron Zook declined to discuss specifics, but his decision to let Cumberland suit up indicates he believes both players were at fault but that neither should lose playing time because of the fight. LeShoure just got the worst of it, and he's out.

"If we deemed it necessary for not to be in uniform, he wouldn't be," Zook said Tuesday.

Cumberland, a 6-foot-5-inch, 251-pound junior wide receiver from Columbus, Ohio, missed the first two games with an injury and is sixth on the team with nine catches for a 21.6-yard average and two touchdowns.

LeShoure, a 6-foot, 240-pound freshman running back from Champaign, is the Illini's fourth-leading rusher with 126 yards, averaging 3.6 yards per carry.

Dienhart still drinking the Illini Kool-aid. This douchebag said Illinois would be the best team in the Big-10 in 3 years, IIRC.

Illinois is 3-3 in conference and something like 5-5 overall....what a disappointment. While I didn't think they'd contend for the B10 title, I thought they'd be better than this. What is going on over there?

You don't lose a 1,600+ yard running back and your leader on defense and get better. I think most people were expecting Illinois not to have as good a year in 2008 as they had in 2007.

All true, however I'm sure the thinking was that Juice and Benn would pick up and move forward on offense and that the D would fair well with the solid DLine they've brought in. Seems....not so much.

U can have a good d-line and still be bad. U need good linebackers to make the tackles. Lehmen was a beast for them. They don't have a guy like that right now.

Last year Leman averaged 10.15 tackles per game (132 total counting the bowl) and was tied for 25th nationally. This year Brit Miller is averaging 11 tackles per game (110 through 10 games), leads the Big Ten and is tied for 5th nationally. Their second and third leading tacklers last year were dbs. This year Martez Wilson is second on the team in tackles. I'd say their linebackers are performing as well if not better this year from a production standpoint.

Yeah but where are they making the tackles. If they are making them three or four yards more down field then last year. Then having the same number of tackles don't matter.

Illinois' offense has turned the ball over with regularity putting their defense in bad position. Their run defense has not been all that bad, but they are brutal in pass coverage. In their 5 losses, the opposing QB's all had big days. IMO, TP will have to beat them with his arm if we want to come out of Champaign with a win. They will be ready for Beanie.

What's interesting is if you read BPs game evaluation this week, they give the position edge to Illinois more often than not...it's a really fair/honest evaluation. Yet, Illinois is not expected to win and they have struggled this year. As someone else suggested...Zook...

He's got 15.5 TFLs, which is a pretty good number.
