Does Zook have the discipline, leadership, and knowledge to make Illinois a powerhouse? No. Does he recruit enough talent to turn a very mediocre program into a respectable team? Yes. And that is good for the Big Ten and conversely for us.

But I have a suspicous feeling that when the program can't "take the next step" Zook isn't going to be able to sell with the "team on the rise" approach.

Juice was benched multiple games last year for McGee, which was later spun as a "closer" role :atom:

Juice needs to work on consistency in the big ten before even dreaming about the NFL. He might be drafted late next year... as a RB.

I don't accept that out of hand. The primary stumbling blocks for a program like Illinois to move up a level or two are not discipline, leadership and knowledge. I would put recruiting leverage at the top of the list.

This is our big rival after scUM for now and the foreseeable future. Playing at Illinois is always tough. Late in the year the wind is so bad in that stadium your really only playing a half of football.

Yes! According to Scout, this is a solid OL prospect committed to the Zooker on Tuesday.
One of the top two-way linemen in the Panhandle this year, Carter projects as an offensive tackle at the college level. He's a tremendous athlete -- especially for someone his size..

I am from the same town (Moville) as Nathans mom LuAnn. I had talked to Nathans uncle Kirk 1 week before Nathan announced for Illinois. Kirk had told me then that Nathan was going to verbal to Illinois. The main reason was because of the assistant coach at Illinois (Locksley I believe). He said that he really liked him. If Locksley leaves at the end of the season, Nathan might not stick with the commitment. Also he said that he liked Zook, and thought that he was a straight shooter. Nathan was told that Juice would likely go pro after this year, and then the job would be his. I told his uncle that I thought he was making a mistake, and that Zook was a snake oil salesman. It was also said that Nathan had been trying to contact the Iowa coaches for a couple of weeks, but they would not return his calls. I think the Iowa coaches had already decided to move on to someone else. The other thing I heard was that Cotton would verbal to Iowa.

Wait - you took this seriously? You know that Scheelhaase is an Iowa legacy right? That his dad and his uncle played at Iowa? And that Iowa fans - with their one 2-star commit as we enter August - were counting on this "lifelong Hawkeye fan" to be their pied piper, leading other top flight talent to Iowa City? And that their grapes are as sour as they've ever been?

There are many holes in that story, but giant gaping hole is this: Scheelhaase was recruited by Reggie Mitchell, not Mike Locksley. Locksley may very well leave after this year (If Maryland tanks, look for them to fire the Fridge and hire DC recruiting guru Locks). But Mitchell isn't going anywhere. And neither is Scheelhaase.

The poster came off as if he wasn't exactly 100% about Locksley being the coach....

I've seen him play a couple of times.

Good mobility and finishes well. Definitely a redshirt as I think he's only 250 or so right now. A bit like Longo but without the frame & upside. He's the kind of kid that Iowa fans would have drooled over a couple of years ago as a Ferentz "type" OL.

Tough kid, not someone we would have offered but Ullery was high on him. Not the building blocks of physical ability and athleticism of Longo but folks around the Elks think high of him. A friend of a friend on the Elks staff who played in the GCL in Cincy thinks he's the real deal.

Jake's a good kid... He was in an A.P. class I taught there this past semester... He was recovering from a stress fracture in his foot but I believe he is fine now... I wish him the best at Illinois...
