Illinois Fighting Illini (you'll see)

-Illinois is going to start churning out a lot of pro prospects...very Miami esque. Starting with the 2009 NFL Draft. Vontae Davis, "barring injury or just a horrible campaign is a 1st round pick", Will Davis (Could be another with the really big year some are expecting), Xavier Fulton (Tons of upside...just starting playing LT last year...), etc. are just some of the names for next year. It REALLY takes off with the 2010 NFL Draft (Benn, Wilson, etc.) and after.

-Illinois will win the B10 and go to a BCS this year, setting up a HUGE 2009 when they win it again and win a NC. I can also see them not winning the B10 this year, but I doubt it. I think Illinois will just be too fast, too hungry (ESPECIALLY after that Rose Bowl...a lot of players are as hungry as you can imagine), too tough, too aggressive as well as disciplined for a lot of teams. Any game where they could be unusually undisciplined, they can win just by talent and hunger IMO. I definitely have them winning the B10 and NC (Well I should change that and just say I think they will be undefeated in 2009...you never know how things could go in the BCS...).

-Illinois will become a national power in the next 5-10 years.

That is basically the sum of what I think...

We'll see right? This thread will be around in the next 2-3 years or so...by then we'll have an idea of how things are shaping up.

Thakid told me to wait and see, and that's what I'm gonna do!

Saw this yesterday and brought back some painful memories. We don't talk enough about how the 2011 Ohio State team, easily the weakest OSU team of this millennium, absolutely BROKE the Illinois football program. We still haven't recovered from that awful October afternoon almost 11 years ago.

Illini were 6-0, ranked 16th in the country, and a 3-3 OSU team was coming to town, Illinois was a rare favorite against the Buckeyes, 16 year old me was excited, the Illini are gonna win back the turtle and we were gonna have a special year. We were just waiting and we thought we were seeing.

And then we weren't. Illinois lays an egg, OSU wins 17-7, then came the nose dive to hell, losing our next 5, Zook is fired putting us on the road to Tim Beckman/Bill Cubit/Lovie Smith.

Illinois wins that game, maybe we don't lose the next 5, Zook holds on another year, maybe we never end up with Beckman, who the hell knows? I just remember being so pissed after that game if I'd have known just how deep the fallout was going to be from that loss, I would've cried.

Well, the drought is over, the Illini are #24 in the AP poll!

May have trouble staying there if Devito can't play against Minnesota, but Bielema has pulled us out of the dumpster for now! Thrilled to pass on the longest ranking drought to Rutgers!

Illinois dubbed as team to watch for College Football Playoff berth

All eyes in the Big Ten are on Ohio State and Michigan, but only one of the unbeaten arch-rivals can reach the conference championship game. The two will duke it out in the regular season finale with a berth to Indianapolis likely on the line. On the other side of the conference Illinois continues to win and looks to be the favorite to face either the Buckeyes or Wolverines in the conference title game. But the Illini shouldn't be viewed as just another stepping stone in the path to the College Football Playoff. David Pollack explained why the No. 16 ranked squad in the CFP rankings is a team to watch leading up to the coveted four-team invitational event.

"Off the radar, off the grid, a little bit down the list, a team that I think could control their own destiny to get to the playoff — like, I think if they win out — Illinois," Pollack said Tuesday on the College Football Playoff Top 25 reveal. "Illinois plays really good defense. I love what I see. They can control the clock. They've got a lot to prove, but they play Michigan. They match up with them stylistically, from a physicality standpoint, how they play D, and then you play Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game — like, I'm just saying. It's a far-fetched scheme, but you look at Illinois and the way they've played this season, they've done an unbelievable job."

*This team could spoil the Ohio State Buckeyes path to the College Football playoff.

Yeah, the Fighting Brets are exceeding their preseason expectations and have the inside tract to the win the B1G West (they should beat Sparty and the Nerds, so it might just come down to beating Purdue). However, get back to me on that* if and when they beat scUM.
