Illicit Ohio.com/Old Building "porn"

BigWoof31

"Barkin' up the wrong tree"
Very, very long story short. Went to the Braves game last night with a friend from High School. Picked him up at his house and said hello to his parents.

His father was ranting and raving about the latest televangelist on TV and the discussion turned to Jim and Tammy Baker of the 1980's. I didn't know much about them, but his father said that in his day - this guy made Joel Osteen look like Peanuts. He mentioned he even built his own theme park!

So I got up this morning and was bored (waiting for the Dawgs to kick off at noon) and starting trying to find pictures of Bakers old theme park. What I found was an amazing site called IllicitOhio.com. The site developer is from Ohio and his hobby is to travel to old/close Ohio amusement parks, snap photos of some of the wear/tear and post them.

He did a whole segment on Bakers Park/hotel. A large feature on Idora park outside of Youngstown, Chippewah Lake Park near Medina, Euclid Beach Park...etc

It's a little antiquated, but I've spent all morning reading about the wonderful history of some of these places in your state. Amazing stuff. Check it out if you aren't already slamming drinks and getting ready for "Da U"

Now, this site I knew about but haven't been to it in years... it's really cool too... I think when I saw it I found it trying to explain to someone the creepy stuff around athens...

http://www.forgottenoh.com/Counties/Athens/athenscounty.html

We used to get hammered and go sit and drink in the West State cemetery, my buddies house was literally the second house from it...

And of course, the granddaddy of Athens creepiness....

Woof- thanks, that's really cool... I grew up with relatives that had a cotttage at Chippewa lake and it was kind of a game to walk down to the gates of the park every summer and see it rot away... but, it's all very Scooby Doo Mystery type stuff.

I've always been really intrigued by the pics on this website of Cincinnati's abandoned subway:

Too bad that was never completed.

The guy behind the blog has visited similar spots around Cincy.

Americana was a park I grew up going to. The roller coaster they talk about (Screechin' Eagle) gave me and my best friend concussions when we were 7-8. :so:

More recently he stopped by Surf Cincinnati which I only went to once in HS.

There's a web page that covers abandoned areas/modern ghost towns that also has a bunch of pics from Surf Cincinnati but for the life of me I can't remember the name right now.

I live across the street from Geauga Lake and it's sad to watch what's left of the park rot. We had a membership the first year we were here, but they pulled out the 2 best coasters after the first summer and we never went back. I hope the water park makes it since it will be a good place for kids.

Sorry for the necro bump. The Chive recently did a piece on Tyson's mansion back in September, someone linked it to me this morning. I've spent the better part of the morning perusing the old IllicitOhio website, which is still standing after all this time. Kind of sad that a few other haunted/tresspasser sites are now abandoned, and all of that content is gone. I thought Forgotten Ohio was gone, but it looks like the link was just old, Googlez found it fine.

The only place we made it to on his list when I was younger was Americana after it was shut down. We visited a number of local haunts and the Powder Factory near King's Mill/King's Island, but the website owner never went to that location. The Powder Factory is less menacing during the daylight, but navigating the winding road to get to it, and seeing that big tower looming before you at midnight as you make your way down the hill to it...it's creepy.

Funny note: if you search for Illicit Ohio, this thread is the 6th hit that comes up

Tyson's house is in such a random location...Southington is out of the way but a fucking hike from Hopkins. I don't even know if there are any general aviation fields to land a private plane unless you go to Warren. The drive from Middlefield to Warren is an eyesore, though at least you go through Center of the World.
