2024 IL DE Marquise Lightfoot (Miami, FL Verbal)

I mentioned a few threads back that a re-worked NIL package was being put together for Lightfoot. That has been mostly finalized but not presented to him yet. Why? Lightfoot wants to still play the game - still talk with other coaching staffs, talk NIL with other collectives representing different universities, etc. LJ is focused on who is left on the board and he isn't giving Lightfoot attention at the level he wants it. There have been three conversations with people closer to the NIL package and Lightfoot over the past two weeks. This should be telling - all of those conversations have been initiated by Lightfoot.
Mentioned on another Buckeye message board. But it lines up with info I've heard that LJsr isn't going after Lightfoot all that hard. And his recruiting isn't as aggressive when recruits aren't on campus.
But I think this scenario, OSU doesn't want to play games with kids. If you want to be a Buckeye, then prove it. If you want to keep looking for bigger deals from more teams than there's not going to be much interaction.

While I'm not thrilled about the NIL shopping/Miami commitment, I would like to get back in here even if we land Houston (assuming there are no major character flaws, which I would assume is not the case considering we pursued him up to his commitment). I know our staff's approach to that whole subject, but the reality is we are hurting at DE recruiting and there doesn't seem to be many contingency plans out there. There is no recruit in Ohio that I think is OSU caliber and we keep striking out nationally.

Now if the staff thinks he will be more of a headache and problem in the locker room, then leave it alone. But with the new landscape of NIL, I think there are plenty of kids who will be good team players but are just figuring out the process and trying to get the best deal they can. Not sure where Lightfoot falls on that spectrum, but I would certainly kick the tires with what is going on with NIL at the U if there are no character concerns.

The offensive coaches seem to have found away around the NIL/locker room conundrum for elite talent. Defensive coaches need to do the same.

I think if the proof is in the pudding, which I believe it will be this year, getting solid D studs will be easier.
As a whole for defensive recruiting, I agree. For DL, we should have a dominant unit this year to show off and I just think recruits moving forward need to know who their DL coach is going to be after years 1-2.

Regardless of the whole succession issue, a year of dominant DE play would certainly help. That can help counterbalance the NIL cash grabs with results (see offensive recruiting).

Read an article regarding the 'top 15 players yet to commit' 2024 version. 13 of 'em were 5*s, DT's, DE's etc. Soooo, connecting the dots, some of the biggest remaining names are what Pnut/RB are saying, that they're playing "Price is Right" on the NIL front. Smart on their part, to be sure, but not entirely certain that tOSU will be playing that game. At least not this year. Anticipate that there will be 4-6 players on DL moving on or out at the end of this upcoming season. And, depth appears to be thinnest at DE, including Abor's injury. Yeah, Coach J's longevity is hard to overcome, but agree with above, the big payday will be on draft day. Go Bucks!

Devils Advocate: TTUN fans have been using similar logic the last two seasons, and they don't have $#i+ recruiting payoff.

Yeah. Call it for what it is.

A swing and a miss problem is a swing and a miss problem.
This is the same conversation we were having about him leading up to the Jack Sawyer, Tuimaluloa class at some point the run will end he get's a year older every year. Just hope he knows when it's time to hang it up and doesn't hold on too long like a lot of coaches.

Other targets seem to be ahead of four-star defensive end Ernest Willor Jr. on OSU’s board right now, but that could change if he visits later this season. There doesn’t seem to be a high chance of either Dylan Stewart or Marquise Lightfoot flipping from their current commitments, but if that changes, OSU would welcome either into the fold.
