If you could have one person back from 2002....

Kept thinking about this and realized that this defense was fine as is. Yeah, who couldn't use Will Smith?...but they stopped the running game of Texas, Penn State, Minnisota and Michigan without him.

Gamble? A real shut down corner, but he got burnt bad in the Wisconsin game and again against Michigan. Shit Happens, especially at that spot, but I don't see him as crucial to this defense. The backs had a solid season against the pass.

Gamble/Jenkins as a receiver? Whoa, there's only one ball on the field at a time and Gonzo, Holmes, Ginn, and Hall give us all the talent we can use in any one game, so why waste the pick there... especially when Gamble doesn't improve your speed receiver spots? Seems to me that the problem wasn't with our receivers, it was with getting the ball to them.

No doubt a (mentally) healthy Clarett helps this club. I'm still holding out judgement on Pittman. I think you can name 5 or 6 backs in the Big 10 you'd rather have and Buckeye fans are not used to that. So maybe it's Clarett.

Everyone loves Nuge, but Huston has consistently put the ball in the end zone and hit some important fieldgoals from 40+ yards.

Then I settled on it: What we didn't have this year was a consistent punter. BJ Sander's punting gave that 02 squad a terriffic weapon that this year's team seemed to lack.

I will go a totally different route and surprised no one has mentioned this. While Smith or Gamble would be the best choices for a talent upgrade I will have to ask why did we lose the two games we lost? Because of the offense.

Yes Clarett is the pink elephant in the room but I feel Pittman has done a great job this year and Clarett would not have been the biggest improvement. It would have come from having Craig Krenzel back as the QB.

It is funny, I never liked Krenzel because I thought he was never a good enough QB and he made me throw so many things at the TV for his bad passes, but he didn't turnover the ball and he was clutch. While Troy Smith is more talented and some of his games have been unbelievable, the downsize is that he is the sole reason this year we are not in the Rose Bowl.

First off if we have Krenzel he starts and finishes the Texas game. No QB rotation no shuffling QBs. Instead with Smith he was suspended and because of that was not ready for the Texas game when we needed him. Against Penn State Krenzel doesn't throw that interception and probable pulls a Holy Buckeye again!

Not complaining about having Troy Smith now and next year. But while grabbing Will Smith or Chris Gamble would be nice for a great defense, I want to have been able to win the two games we lost and Krenzel would have affected those games the most.

The Great Eight-Eight, Ben Hartsock.

I'm not a Hamby-H8ter, but all other performances being equal, quite simply, if Hartsock were catching passes against Texas or pass blocking against Penn State, OSU wins.

everybody here is smoking crack :)

IMO, First choice would be Krenzel. 4th and 14 and Holy Buckeye. Nuff said...With him, we beat texas, and I believe he would've pulled out the Penn State win somehow someway. He was that special, no matter what the stats say. I also can't believe nobody has mentioned Tim Anderson. He CONSISTENTLY occupied two blockers, applying constant pressure up the middle to flush out the qb into the waiting arms of Smith or Scott. A man amongst men, and how many times did you see him chase down a runningback on a screen or draw. Not to take anything away from gamble, clarett, doss or even jenkins, but we won the NC on Defense, and he was the heartbeat of that defense..

Hmmm.... Well, Will Smith was pretty good. This guy was an absolute force for the Buckeyes. He was my idol on their team, while he was there because I played defense and had his number, too. Anyhow, Will Smith was simply dominant for the Buckeyes. This guy came out to play every game, and made it known that he was going to dominate the tempo of the game. Quarterbacks feared the guy. He put so much pressure on them, and made them have to get the ball off much quicker than they wanted to. 2003 Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year... Yeah, I think you all know who I'd want back the most.
