If you could buy stock in...

South Florida was my first thought for the 5-10 year span. Seeing what they've done in 7-8 years, and being in the Big East (which has gotten weaker over the past 2-3 years), I see more than one Conference Champ, and BCS berth in that time span. Cincinnati has the same potential. Minnesota looks good right now, at least in the 5 year model. Washington might be a good buy-at-the-lowest-point investment. It's too big a program to stay sub .500 for too long. Depending on the new coach, they could start paying dividends next year.

20 years is just too long to predict. I can't imagine that any program will have the same AD and head coach by then. The only investments that would make sense would be schools with a long history of success. Not going to make a ton over what you pay, but likely to keep their value. USC, Texas, and Okla are the best bets. Of course, you would have said the same thing about Nebraska 10 years ago.

5 - UNC
10 - USF
20 - Michigan (this return will be closer to 10 than 20, but the upside is undeniable, especially given it's current price.
Of course, you would have said the same thing about Nebraska 10 years ago.
Or Florida State, Miami (already mentioned) and others.

Coming into the season, Penn State was probably a good investment with a new regime upcoming. Now the buying price will increase too much to stay that way, imo.

No love for Arizona State? Dennis Erickson? Rapidly growing talent pool in AZ due to the influx of people? I would put money on ASU in the 10-20 year range. Not in the short term.
I'd short ASU... media always buys in the offseason, so I could get a pretty good return, when they do what they normally do :wink2:

I don't trust Erickson enough to buy in the short term, don't think ASU is bad enough for me to buy in the long term.

Mexicans are too small to play football. However I am bullish on ASU soccer.

Love this question!!!

Really the goal is to have to pick teams that are having rough spots right now and determine how quickly they can recover.

ONE YEAR INVESTMENT - Really hard to think of a one year wonder type school. But you have to think of schools that are underperforming. And one comes to mind, Wisconsin. After their recent losses people seem to be down on them. But they are still Wisconsin and this time next year they should be better. Another one could be Miami (Fl) as they are playing ALOT of freshman and other young players and should be much better next year.

FIVE YEAR INVESTMENT - This one seems easier to me. My #1 choice... SMU. Really... how much lower can you buy them at? But you know what will happen over the next 3-4 years. June Jones will get their offense cranking and be able to recruit better than he ever could in Hawaii. In 5 years I would not be surprised if they are 11-1 BCS buster type school. But after 5 years Jones might be moving on, so it is a perfect 5 year type ramp up, sell and then watch Jones leave and SMU go back to where they came from.

TEN YEAR INVESTMENT - A little trickier, but I hate to do this, but I must. Michigan. Michigan is such a great buy low right now how could they not be better in 10 years? I could have put them in 5 but that would be betting on Rich Rod and that isn't sound. So 10 is about right. That gives 3-4 years so Rich Rod can get fired and they can move on. But you know Michigan won't be down for long and will be back to being 10-2 and losing to Ohio State every year in no time.

TWENTY YEAR INVESTMENT - Hard to guess who could rise up in 20 years. But I am going to gamble on Florida Atlantic. Schelleberger built Miami up and he is doing the same for FAU. You know any conference trying to add teams (Big East anyone) would love to grab a Florida school. My bet will be FAU for that. You could go Central Florida but I'd rather go with the lower buy for a 20 year investment and that would be FAU.

I actually considered them. But the same could be said for your rival Arizona. Arizona will grow as a state and have better in home talent. But it is 50/50 on which of the two programs rise.

Lo siento gringo! The population influx isn't coming from Mexico - well, some of it is, but not much. If anyone has been paying attention, Arizona is becoming a much better state when it comes to football. Arizona is still growing faster than almost every other state in the union and will continue to do so as long as housing is affordable and there is job growth. That just means more football players.

Ohio State, USC, Texas. I'll gladly sacrifice the growth potential for the decreased risk and annual dividends. I play it safe whenever possible.

I have to disagree on UofA consistently beating out ASU for the best recruits in AZ. Phoenix and the surrounding cities are where the growth is. Tempe is in the middle of all of it. These new kids will grow up going to ASU games - not UofA games. Plus, have you ever been to Tucson? That town is so rundown it isn't funny. It's like being in Mexico, but an hour north. Tempe is a nice city and is close to all the major professional sports franchises and the entertainment value alone is a selling point that Tucson has none of. Plus, if you grow up a Sun Devil, you most always hate UofA.
