If defensive staff changes are coming, who should OSU be looking to hire?

I truly understand the viewpoints of all posters here, with the exception of labeling of the LJSr. negative recruiting as "message board rumors." I realize many of our posters were not around when this happened or were not privy to that information at the time, so I will explain. This was confirmed by numerous, independent sources who were very close the recruitment of players such as Devon Still, Navarro Bowman, and A.J. Wallace (and a few others). He flat out told them that Ohio State, both in the athletic programs and in the educational realm, are racist and if football did not work out for those players, OSU would turn their backs on them. He used phony statistics and completely unsubstantiated claims on players that were at the time favoring us.

I understand that recruiting is going to get dirty but using untrue, racially charged claims like he did crossed the line. I am no stranger to recruiting and what goes on...Larry Johnson crossed the line of permissible recruiting tactics. I am of the opinion that some things transcend football and that racial relations is one of those things. You can claim football is a "business" all you want and I mostly agree. But again, instigating racial tensions with 16-18 year old kids also trumps "business."

As for the rest: I have no knowledge or inkling if he was involved in the coverup. I do know LJ Sr. is objectively an outstanding coach that is probably the best recruiter of the Atlantic Coast that is out there. He kills it in MD, D.C., VA, and in the New England states particularly. I really have no doubts he will be incredible in those areas at OSU and perhaps even better with our resources and talent available. In terms of coaching prowess, recruiting ability, and likelihood of continuity, this is a homerun hire. With Holley, we did back off in the past but I know Johnson will want him in this class and frankly, I want him in this class too. While I prefer Thomas, I think Knadi is a longer shot and I have no preference. All this being said, I really don't like the hire. While he might have been the best hire in terms of coaching and recruiting, I am never going to forget his past and I think the cons outweigh the pros, although the pros are substantial. If you like this hire, I can understand why. If you hate it, I can understand that too. I hope he cuts out the racially charged recruiting tactics and produces a very successful defensive front for us. However, that does not mean I am all of the sudden ok with him.

You think Urban made this hire without talking to anyone else on his staff? Did he run this by his DC LF? or his AD? Luke would have an opinion on LJ.Sr. and I wonder if he was consulted?

I'm sure they had a staff meeting regarding the potential hires, but ultimately, it's Urban's ship.

I stand with RB07OSU. Onebuck,i think most of the issues occurred before Meyer got here. Perhaps that is why he is more inclined to ignore them. I understand why this hire happened. I believe he will improve the team. I still dont like him.

The hires seem good, but the two weak links are still on the staff; Fickle and Combs. In my opinion, find a home for Fickle and bring in Tressel from MSU. Combs should be replaced by someone who teaches technique rather than yells and jumps around. Unfinished business.
