Don't Immanentize the Eschaton

I have been convinced for some time now that the office in which I work operates on a Alice Through the Looking Glass mentality. Last Friday was the perfect example:

I walked out into our front lobby and the boss was hanging a plaque on the wall. As I went over to see what the award was for, I noticed right away that it was not for the entire office, but only for my boss. I thought this was strange since such an award would generally be placed in the person's individual office, but since my boss has an ego the size of Pittsburgh it didn't surprise me too much.

However, once the boss was finished one of my co-workers took a look at it and began laughing. I asked her what was so funny and she stated that he gave the award to himself. Not believing someone would be absurd enough to do such I thing, I asked her how she knew this. She stated that he had asked for her opinion on the wording of the award several weeks ago, she simply didn't know he was giving it to himself when he asked.

I work for one very strange and idiotic boss. Anyone else have similar stories to share?

My first job after tOSU was with the Atlanta office of a predominantly Jewish NY-based law firm. Somehow, the office's managing partner (Jewish from NY, not that there's anything wrong with that) had taken up fox hunting and took it very seriously. So, the ENTIRE office had to be decorated with English fox hunting pictures and equipment.

grad, what was stated on the plaque? Maybe I could win the same here in our office. Very bizzare guy giving himself an award.

Basically it was an award for Achievement due to his creation of a web site. The only award I can think of that comes close to this one is the "First Annual Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence."

I worked for a Berkley MBA that based our sales strategy on Civil War battles.

I worked for a Harvard MBA that wore $1,000 suits to meet with plant managers in jeans and cowboy boots.

I had a boss that was having an affair with a woman in Baton Rouge, he lived in Houston. He used the company to pay for his visits and his excuse was that he was coming over here to help me make sales. It reflected poorly on me that he had to spend so much time here. The company made huge cut backs and for only the second time in my life I was let go. On my exit interview I told the SOB he cost me my job and he did not disagree, Needless to say I got a good exit package. He was cut lose less than six months later.

I worked with a sales manager that preferred to drink his dinner at the local gentlemans club every night. Once in a while is alright and let's be honest, he had no chance with the dancers but he considered himself quite the ladies man.

Someone once said you do not leave your job, you leave your boss. Is it any wonder I used to change jobs every two years?

Man, makes me appreciate what I good boss I have right now. I have had bad ones in the past, but nothing like what you guys described. My worst one since I finished school just liked to do stuff like take credit whenever someone else did something that was well received and he would lay blame everywhere but at his own feet if those same people made a mistake.

If anyone did something like that at my firm, it would be a mistake from which they would never recover. They would be made fun of incessantly and brutally, and it wouldnt stop, even after they took it down. This is one of the things I like most about working for an investment bank - its probably one of the least PC workplaces you'll find. (Regardless of what they say on the news).

That said, Im fortunate to say that I like my current boss. Good guy.

Went to work on Monday and I was 4 minutes late. I walked in and My boss ripped Me a new one saying I need to get to work on time blah blah blah, I told Him after taking the demotion I took he better watch it before I walked out. He kept going on. Finally He left, so after He left I was getting the till ready for the bar area and noticed that the deposits from all weekend were still ine the safe (company policy is they get dropped every day in night deposits if the bank isnt open) Well I had to email My regional manager to see if maybe when I was off this weekend if company policy changed or if My Boss had just neglegeted to take them to the bank. Oppps....He neglelected to take them to the bank......I guess He shouldnt have had made such a big deal about 4 minutes

very good quote. I had a job I loved for 11 years and left because of the new boss (he was my district manager for about 7 months when I left). I never though one person would make me do that but I was wrong. I worked for some great people over the years but once you get an asshole it really makes you evaluate what you want to do in your life. Since I left I have no more stress and found a btter job.... he actually helped me out :)
