I was there...memories of The Game 2006

Wow, what an awesome experience! A couple things that jumped out to me:

5. The ROTC guys doing push-ups after each touchdown had the enitre stadium counting and cheering.
6. The flashes going off in the second half were countless. I don't know how the offense concentrated.
10. Seeing a mob on the field and the stands still jammed with people 20 minutes after the game as the band played Carmen Ohio for the second time is something I will never forget. I love how loud everyone sings.

These three things I will never forget. It was awesome how EVERYONE was counting with the ROTC guys doing their pushups. The Cameras going off we one of the best images that I saw. It seemed that everyone knew that OSU was going to score that last touchdown. On that play when Robo scored, the flashes were amazing. Hearing Carmen Ohio that second time was awesome. It was amzaing how everyone was still there and sing for that second time.

One memory that I remember, was seeing the Michigan Band having to wait for everyone to leave the stadium in order for them to move. They were just sitting there like idiots. It was awesome.

I think 20 years from now, there will have been 500,000 people at the game. Just like at the Snow Bowl. There were like 400,000 people at that game when the stands only held 75,000 at the time. Jeeze.

That 250,000 was just A Deck. Don't forget about the 1.5 million in the rest of the stadium.

It was the best time I've ever had at a game. These things stood out for me:

1. High-fiving everybody within a few feet of me of after too many big plays to count

2. Seeing Tyson Gentry go onto the field with the team

3. Seeing only about 5,000 TSUN fans in the entire stadium

4. Script Ohio before the game, knowing it was being televised, since Dr. Woods had told those of us at the Symphony/Pep Rally on Thursday that it would be on ABC

5. Troy Smith sliding his feet behind himself four times, like a bull readying for a charge, before running through the Tunnel of Pride

6. The class of the crowd, showing true respect for Bo during the entire time his contributions to tOSU and TSUN were being remembered

7. The awesone halftime show by TBDBITL

8. TD passes from Troy to 4 different receivers

9. 50+ TD runs from Beanie and Pitt, as the crowd went ape-shit for the last 40 yards each time

10. The clean recovery of the onside kick that basically finished the game

11. Seeing the crowd storm the field, while the police simply remained in triangles around each goalpost

12. Staying long enough to hear "Carmen, Ohio" played TWICE after The Game

13. Telling a kid next to after it was over, "You'll remember this for the rest of your life"

14. Being part of a "Troy Smith!" "Heisman!" back-and-forth cheer on the way out of the stadium

15. Seeing many fans walking out with pieces of the sod that saw only 1 game: the biggest game in the history of the stadium

16. Playing corn-hole and tailgating with a certain fan from our 50th state who was attending his first game in Ohio Stadium - I think he picked a good one

17. Realizing that I have been fortunate enough to see these Buckeyes in every stadium they played in during calendar year 2006

my sod has now been planted as I try and keep it alive...has anyone heard of buckeyes being put in the endzone for good luck? I stated earlier I found one under the sod I took, I'm wondering how it got there? Groundskeeper maybe puts some in the endzone for good luck is all I can think of. Any info would be appreciated.

When I worked for OSU landscaping department as a student, thirty years ago (urgh!), the old timers used to say that there were Buckeyes hidden under the field for good luck in Ohio Stadium. I always thought they were kidding. Maybe not?

Cool thing after the game: While waiting in the lonnnnnnnng line for the bus back to the Crew Stadium lot, the older guy behind me commented that when he first came to the campus the only building around there was one that he pointed to. I then found out that he is from Youngstown and started as a student in the early 40's and was on the OSU track team as a distance runner. He told us several short stories about Jessie Owens, who was still training with the team sometimes and doing exhibitions and coaching for Ohio high school teams!! He has had season football tickets for about 60+ years, but can only travel to Columbus a time or two a year now. He got to know Coach Tress when he coached in Youngstown and still is in contact with him from time to time...says he is "a very nice man with a lovely family."

Thats really cool, but I'm a little suprised that we don't have little buckeye trees springing up throughout the course of the season because of it ;-).
