...I was thinking more along the lines of being the part where we all respect his passion for his own team and the various bias that rides along with that passion.

Osugrad21, you?ve tackled a basic and difficult topic for us all. Agree that a common resolution mechanism is vital to the good order and openness and interaction in any group forum.

However, what you are asking suggests that there is no meritorious social contract for respect. Rather, as you put it ?we all just do it??regardless of the merits, the values, or the biases.

IOW, you are suggesting that, if someone is emotional [passion sounds so much cooler and the beautiful people use this term], this requires us to respect not only them, but ANY value they are representing AND any bias they display.

Well, prejudice is a bias, racism is a bias, and so forth. IOW, it is evident that neither this forum nor any place else just says respect and permits any kind of behavior as long as it is passionate enough. Furthermore, this country is chock full of special people telling other un-special people what words, gestures and a host of other nitpicking incorrect behaviors they can or cannot do. This, juxtaposed with the spectacle of what special people can do anywhere, anytime, anyhow that if you say something, you are the dreaded inappropriate, and justly deserve the slings and outrages of wonderful cool people everywhere.

So, respect anything sure sounds nice and fair as a solution. And it sure ia offered often. And it sure is?fluff. And it sure isn?t ?followed. And it sure is a gigantic spectacle of foolishness out there. Good thing the Buckeye football team is on a mission from God, focuses daily on their tasks at hand, and hones their teamwork and execution to a razor edge. Kinda NOT at all like ?the bilious BS that serves as social interaction in this country. If you want to blow off some steam, just imagine if the Buckeye football team followed our suggestion to respect anything and any bias and any passion. Picture the wonderful play vs SC where every Buckeye did their thing, and expressed himself passionately.... :wink2:

Nope...not close. Furthermore, your attempt to dissect my post and forcefeed your own interpretive tangent is pure rubbish.

How about this in as plain of terms as I can conjure...fans think their teams/players are the best. As long as it is presented intelligently and with respect, the same should be returned even if there is not agreement.

You might want to look up the Philosophical Musings forum in Open Discussion...As for me, I'll handle the forum the same way we always have.
Grazie.

.................an interesting example of walking the talk of your recent call for respecting all due to passion along with bias. :wink2:

buck68,

sorry, have to side with grad here. when you say that you need a resolution mechanism, you're missing the point. respect is not about doing something because you have to, or are guilted into, or feel shamed or like you have to be pc about something. I realize that you're ranting against being pc, but those who do are usually missing the point, as you have. if you respect other people for having different opinions, b/c they have presented an argument rationally and intelligently, you don't treat them nicely because you have to. You seem to entirely dismiss their point b/c you're so blinded by your own opinions, or feel as though you're not supporting your team by doing so. You respect an opponent and treat people accordingly b/c they are intelligent in their opposition. no one's asking you to treat an idiot like an equal, simply that you recognize why we treat others with respect, not simply that we have to or are coerced into it by some politically correct conspiracy determined to make wussies out of the world. I have no fear of defending my team against other people, and can do so logically and rationally, because my (our) team actually does kick ass. I don't have to hide behind blind homerism to support my team.

Oops. Wrong button. Looks like you chose to again take your own little tangent regardless of the true and obvious original intent.

I hate coming in 3rd.

Crimony. I feel like I'm reading the contract on Wonka's wall that the kids have to sign before entering the factory and finding the magical wonders that await them.
