5-Year-Old Says School Bus Driver Duct-Taped His Mouth

POSTED: 7:06 am EST December 14, 2005
UPDATED: 8:07 am EST December 14, 2005
<!--startindex-->DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Authorities in Pinellas County are investigating allegations that a bus driver put duct tape on a 5-year-old's mouth. The Gerber family has filed a criminal complaint with the sheriff's office and the school system. They said their son's bus driver duct taped his mouth shut Monday afternoon while the bus monitor did nothing. The boy said they took the tape off before his stop."It hurt when you take it off, and when you put it on you, it's a little bit sticky," said Kyle Gerber.Authorities said the video system on the bus was not working at the time.School officials have taken the bus driver and monitor off the route while they investigate.

I had a teacher threaten a classmate of mine with that in high school. Her response was that if you put tape over a student's mouth and the student had a cold (stuffy nose) that if the student sneezed your ear drums would pop.

It might have been a bluff but the teacher did not duct tape the kid.

I personally had velcro installed on either side of my kids' mouths. It makes it much easier to attach a muzzle.

regretably, I can understand why he did it... I can think of numerous times I wanted to do similar... when a kid is totally disrespectful, rude and beligerent.. think of a 5 year old calling you an asshole, a fuckin idiot... and that he doesn't have to listen to a fucking thing you say... and go fuck yourself... because it does come out of those little mouths... and nothing you say will make them stop.. nothing... and they keep going and going...

Easy for us to say what we'd do.. cuz we weren't there... and it wasn't happening to us...

I doubt very much if this child was saying "I'm sorry sir. I'll be quiet now. Where would you like me to sit?" and the bus driver diving for the duct tape..

This is exactly what I relay to my son working on his Masters in Teaching to be cognizant of... these brats exist... and it's a zero tolerance world

When I was five, I would have yelling fits. My mom broke me of it by taping my mouth shut with masking tape (obviously this is somewhat different than a bus driver using duck tape). I'm sure some would consider this child abuse, but it was harmless and broke me of the problem after the third time it happened.

The bus driver can have the kid removed from the bus for a week or so. Making the parents take time out of their day to drop off and pick up the kid will at least get their attention. Duct tape is a bit harsh, I would have to thump the mother fucker.

Did any of you see the article about the restaurant in the Chicago area with the sign in the front window stating something along the lines that kids are welcome but must use manners and indoor voices? I guess the owner was sick of children doing whatever they want while the parents did nothing. He has received some complaints, but lots of compliments as well.

True and good points, but it comes with the territory. Many times I've had kids and parents verbally abuse me well beyond the line of decency. The thing is, no matter what the kids says, he will get a suspension...if I return the verbal abuse, I could lose my job.

Dude... you sound like a real psycho.:wink2:

Anyway... my question is always this... now, not excusing the tactics. But, if the were to bring criminal charges against Otto... and i were on the jury... the only thing I would need to hear is that some representative of the school had told the parents that their kid had misbehaved in the past--repeatedly-- and did nothing about it... either disciplining him themselves... or probably... better yet, driving him to school themselves-- because he's obviously can't handle riding the bus as a 5 year old.... then whose at fault?
