I hate obnoxious salesmen

I just installed a 52" Sharp 1080i LCD and haven't really taken advantage of the HD signals yet. Any suggestions on whether to go with cable or satellite? I'm thinking football here, don't know if the Big Ten network is coming to T-Town though.
Like Taos, I've had DirecTv for a number of years as well. We have a 47" LCD 1080p Vizio with DirecTv DVR unit and it's great stuff. With DirecTv you can also get the NFL package.

At some point this year they are supposed to be adding a bunch of HD channels, but I don't when that is going to happen.

I have the 47" LCD 1080p (as mentioned earlier) and have been impressed so far. Got mine at Costco for $1699.

Costco now carries a 52" version for $1,999 (I think). They mailed out their summer coupons and those have that TV being $200 off in late August. I recommend them. I think they're a great buy for the money. Everyone that's watched TV at our house has been impressed.

Another nice thought is that it's a US company, based out of California, I believe. they can offer their products for lower prices (as I understand it) because they are a newer company and don't have all of the inventory and overhead of their competitors. And if you buy it at Costco, they double the manufacturer's warranty.

Edit: I also looked up some info on the additional DirecTv HD channels and it looks as though they are supposed to launch this Fall. The Big 10 Network is included in the lineup. I don't have a link to an article, but I found the information at AVS forums and they had a number of pasted articles in their thread.

I saw that you had linked to another article later from AVS - the place to find all the DirecTV alerts is under their Investor Relations directory.

This one
talks to the launch of DirecTV 10 (their 10th satellite) and the pending launch of #11. Pretty soon they will have the ability to carry 1,500 local HD and at least 150 HD nationwide channels.
This article discusses the roll-out of new HD channels - the subject being highlighted by the pending roll-out of all the HBO and Cinemax channels in HD. It also discusses the "big launch" to which you refer - it is slated for September. Additional channels roll-out throughout 2007.
The new HBO channels will be among the up to 100 national HD channels DIRECTV is planning to rollout by the end of 2007 following the launch of its D10 satellite in July. The new services will be available beginning in September and will continue to roll out through the end of the year.
So with D-10 and D-11 Dish is put well behind the 8-ball. Still, there are some things I wish DTV would be better about.
I would really like to see them redo the deal on the HD DVR unit. Right now we run an HD receiver and a regular DVR in parallel. The benfit is redundancy in case conditions make HD iffy we have the regular feed. The downside is bulk and wiring. I wish to consolidate into one HD-DVR receiver, but just have knee-jerk negative reaction to their $399 cost increment. A call to customer retention may be in my future.

DirecTV is the way to go, imo.

Better pricing, packages... and better HD coverage.

They pick up new channels faster (ESPNU, BTN) and with more consistency. They also have guaranteed support for the overflow channels, so they'll have all 5 games that are on at once on the BTN (it may be a premium, but cable is still iffy on whether they will offer any overflow channels).

no crap. that is the one thing that is turning me away from direct tv. i know direct tv has more HD channels and their service and quality is much better, but i can get HD DVR and all the premium channels on demand from time warner for a lot less than direct tv simply because of their ridiculous step up price for their HD DVR component which only offers the 100 buck rebate after a 2 year agreement. i havn't finalized a decision yet, but i am leaning towards going with time warner HD DVR full digital with the premiums on demand. the downside is i dont believe TWC carries the big 10 network.

depends what you want. i am really picky and particular when it comes to big purchases like a HDTV. different types of HDTVs have different pros and cons...as do different manufacturers. vizio makes a pretty good product for the money, but i just want more and i am willing to pay the lil bit more for it. things like VGA inputs, how many HDMI inputs do you want, how much do you value 1080p, picture geometry, accuracy of colors and black levels, do you want HDMI 1.3, and other big and little things along that nature influence how you go about picking a set. i would suggest using the avsforums for info if you want it. tons of info there...although a lot of bias as well, but info nonetheless.

The only reason I have Slime Warmer cable is as backup for when it rains hard here and the satellite signal drops and also for the Hawaii football pay-per-views. Actually, the Hawaii games are probably the sole reason...I can live with the rare satellite signal drops. I'm seriously thinking upgradin my DirecTV to HD, regardless of the initial cost because I know it'll be far better than Slime Warmer...
