I don't ever want to see this crap from Ohio State.

Sadly, crap like this is becoming more and more common among orientation staffs across the country.

And to think, those of us in academic affairs who want to talk with students about things like like coursework, curriculum, research, and professional goals have to compete for time and resources with this shit.

Not to mention, they structure these programs so they have to sit thru all the musical numbers, team-building exercises and ice cream socials just to get to the useful stuff at the end of the day. They are all completely glazed over by the time I get to work with them.

Our first program of the summer was a week ago. We have a two-day program and I'm doing my day one presentation explaining how smart students will take the initiative to go to the open computer lab hours in the evening to browse the schedule of classes and create a tentative schedule so they are ready for registration on day two. Of all people, a PARENT asks me, "But isn't that when they are supposed to be doing fun stuff?" :smash:

You should have responded "no, the fun stuff for the students begins when you leave." Then do this

What always gets a good laugh from us is that our orientation office has the students evaluate all of the programs by asking them to rate on a Likert scale how much they "enjoyed" each session. Not how useful, informative, beneficial, or helpful the session was, but how much they enjoyed it.

And then every Fall when doing a post-review of programs they complain to us that the academic sessions have the lowest scores. As if a talk about academic success or scheduling courses is going to compete with the the comic they hired to entertain them during the evening. :shake:
