Good thing IU got rid of that bastard Mike Davis. :slappy:

As much as I like to take shots at the loosiers I can't say I'd want MD coaching my team or in the B10 for that matter (unless its scUM).

His teams at UAB are the typical mid major that has a punchers chance when they shoot lights out but make some seriously boneheaded moves almost every game.

I saw a game against Arizona last year where in the last few seconds after UAB hits two free to tie the game and force OT they intentionally fouled an Arizona player attempting a half court heave. The refs tried not to call it but they had to, it was one of the most memorable dumb fuck moments in my recent sports memory.

My opinion of Mike Davis is this:

  • good recruiter
  • good developer of talent
  • poor tactician
If you say he's well-suited to do pretty well at a mid-major program, but will screw the pooch if he tries to step up to the big time, I'd probably agree.

I agree that Davis isn't a great basketball coach, but I still enjoy seeing him have some measure of success.

But you have the story backwards there. It was Arizona that committed the stupid-ass fouls at the end of the game, not UAB. And they did it twice. :slappy:

If not, here's the deal: After Arizona battled back from a double-digit deficit to tie the game, Kyle Fogg inexplicably (and intentionally) fouled UAB's Aaron Johnson and sent him to the line for a one-and-one because he presumably thought Arizona was behind despite the game being tied . It was a stupid, sure, but it worked out because Johnson missed the front end and Arizona actually got the ball back with the score still tied. So the clock ticked away and Nic Wise took a jumper that was perfectly timed. If it swished, Arizona would win. If not, all UAB could do was rebound and launch a halfcourt shot that would almost certainly do something besides go through the rim. So when Wise missed and the ball was rebounded by Paul Delaney it appeared the game was headed to overtime, but then Jamelle Horne did something that was both bizarre and sad.

What did Horne do?

He literally chased Delaney as fast as he could, lunged and intentionally fouled him 55 feet from the basket as if Arizona was behind and needed to stop the clock. Problem is, Arizona was not behind. The freaking game was still tied! So Delaney went to the line with 0.8 second left and made the first of two free throws to give UAB a 72-71 win.

My bad. I was so awed by the stupidity I got the teams wrong. :!

I was correct in saying that was some of the dumbest shit I've seen in sports in ages. :wink2:

In men's college basketball, especially during the regular season, I really don't think there are any "huge upsets". There is so much parity. I do think that you can call an upset huge once the tournament begins and you get a team seeded below 50 and they beat a team above the number 14 seed as an example.

No doubt.

UAB took down Butler last night, too....on the same night IU lost to Loyola (MD). Life is good.
