Is this different than the one that they think crashed into the Gulf of Mexico and caused a mass extinction or were they wrong about where it crashed in the past? It's probably the nerd in me, but I find this stuff fascinating. Wasn't the moon created by an asteroid impact while Earth was forming as well?

Yeah, this one is different from the one that hit the Yucatan. That rock was estimated as being 6 miles across. This one is estimated to be as large as 30 miles across.

That's the best explanation that I've heard. The only thing I can't figure out is, why is there only one moon? You would think that a molten planet, with no atmosphere, would've been hit more than once in the amount of time that it takes a planet to form. Maybe the Earth just wasn't a big enough target?
