Huge Asteroid Crater discovered

Like the song says, Breaking Up is Hard To Do.

From the way that reads, this sets aside a massive volcanic eruption as the likeliest cause of the Permian-Triassic extinction.

Is this different than the one that they think crashed into the Gulf of Mexico and caused a mass extinction or were they wrong about where it crashed in the past? It's probably the nerd in me, but I find this stuff fascinating. Wasn't the moon created by an asteroid impact while Earth was forming as well?

That's the best explanation that I've heard. The only thing I can't figure out is, why is there only one moon? You would think that a molten planet, with no atmosphere, would've been hit more than once in the amount of time that it takes a planet to form. Maybe the Earth just wasn't a big enough target?
