"It's disappointing," Johnson said. "He's given his word to coach Dantonio and you stress real hard on commitment and integrity and character, and it disappoints me." ... "I know Pat and those guys are still doing a great job recruiting him. I think he still has the opportunity to go to a great place at Michigan State"

Wow Mr. Canton McKinley coach...

Indeed, don't read too deep... maybe just pandering to this particular outlet to some degree but also not slighting OSU just stressing the importance of follow through and keeping your word. That being said this is a new set of coaches and situations have changed. This is an 18 y/o and he deserves the right to make this life changing decision right up until he signs. Pretty sure Dantonio's checks will clear either way.

Educate a recruiting rookie......is it common for a high school HC to throw his star player under the bus like this? The kid is 18 years old and wants to make sure he is making the right choice. This guy acts as if he is the one that has something at stake in where this kid goes to school.

It's not common...really strong words. Considering his circumstances (committed to MSU and then his gf switches to OSU, and they get a new coach to sure up the situation), kind of ridiculous if you ask me. I am all about a recruit being binded to his word but when there are unforeseeable circumstances as are at play here, it changes things. I say this understanding if Dunn would switch on us...though I would hate it for the rivalry, I can understand kids changing their minds. 18 was not that long ago for me, and I couldn't figure out what to order for lunch, let alone a decision of this magnitude.

He should keep his comments to himself...

Sometimes you've got to be cynical in order to understand what's really going on here. I think Coach Johnson is publicly appealing to the MSU coaching staff that he didn't encourage Se'von to visit OSU. To what effect, you may ask? So that in the future when Canton McKinley has Div. I prospects, the MSU coaching staff will not automatically cross the school off it's list of places to recruit. Canton McKinley H.S. is not one of the academic powerhouses in Stark County and...uuummmmm...Michigan State could be kind of a natural fit for some of the Division I athletes that McKinley produces. Anyway, this is how I see the situation with Coach Johnson.

was that a shot at sparty academics? This is a pretty far fetched explanation as to why the coach called the kid out. Sevon is all buckeye though...

I don't think it's really that far fetched. It's possible that Coach Johnson already knows that Se'von is headed to OSU, and just wants to telegraph the message to MSU that he didn't push Se'von into making the decision....so that it's understood that MSU is still welcome to recruit at McKinley.

Thanks guys. I for one would think that a HC would be more concerned about a young man under his wing would find the perfect fit, and less concerned about hurting the feelings of a DI school.

But the feelings of a D1 school could also mean a free college education for a future player. It is a balancing act but regardless of intentions, too strong of a statement imo. Just tell Dantonio how you feel personally, no need for something like that to be public.

I give the coach some credit. At least he gets it...There are some coaches out there giving bad advice everyday. At least this coach stands for something....Not sure he picked right time to proclaim it...or maybe he did? Who knows

He stands for kids sticking with the decisions they make when they are 17 for the rest of their lives (even when the circumstances in which the decision was made drastically change)?

Yeah, I think he might need to tweak that stance a little bit.

Step back from being a buckeye fan for a sec brother.....

There is usually more to the story than what a paper gives ya. To me...This coach is trying to teach young boys to be men. "your word is your bond" or the current one used this year.... "men of action".....The last thing a head coach with common sense wants to deal with is his kids decommitting all over the place...Its bad business! Does not look good and I know for a fact certain colleges of certain sports hold those grudges against that particular high school. Just as when high school staffs will hold grudges against certain college programs. There is usually more to the story. So who really knows what his stance is...your getting your info from a paper.
