Whoa, wait the bloody fucking minute hold my coffee cowboy am I hearing this correct? YOU moved to Oregon. Well, I guess THAT explains a lot. I'm going to need a drink (well probably a few) to digest this. Er, so, welcome? I guess. You're not from CA so that's a plus. Sort of. Is this part of some far right wing plot to take over the state? Not planning on running for any school boards are you? Have the Bundy's on speed dial?

OK, so while I realize this is a sign of that apocalypse thing I do sincerely welcome you. Really. (Dude I'm trying:drunks:). Really, welcome Milli. I really, really mean that.
Thanks...I guess. No worries, though, seeing as I live in Redmond, which is in the middle of the state (i.e., east of the Cascades) so I'll be far enough away from you.

Ok newbie, go get your shine box and leave the geography lessons to someone who lives here8D
You do realize you moved to one of the only counties east of the Cascades that is blue right? Damn, my redneck niece and her husband just moved out of Prineville for more conservative Douglas county (pretty sure their militia bought a compound there)! I think even the Greater Idaho nuts didn't even bother to include Bend/Redmond/Prineville.

You're in my old stomping grounds--the Deschutes, Crooked, Metolius. Spent a lot of time in Bend in the 80s and early 90s but as the area grew and friends moved away it became more of a stopover for lunch on the way to one of the rivers or to the southeast. Curious how the hell you ended up there (beautiful surely and hope you have a great view of the Cascades)? Retirees seem to gravitate more towards So. OR.

Anyways, it is an outdoor recreation paradise. Don't know what your hobbies are but I still have a few connections there--especially in fly fishing. And like it or not you gotta come to Portland for the airport or the VA! If you come unarmed I'll even have a drink with you.

Really, anything outdoors related (except golf) hit me up for a recommendation. I've spent almost 40 years exploring this state. Oh yeah, then there are the bars and breweries.

PS: if you go east, say to Burns, and proclaim you're from Redmond they'll roll their eyes and mutter something about little LA (which is the Bend-Redmond-Prineville "megapolis"). Keep going east until you hit Idaho and they'll just sneer and say "Fucking Oregonians". Welcome to the west!

Up here in the Great Black Swamp, they are saying that we could see a total of 1-3 inches of snow between Sunday-Tues from 2 different clipper systems. That's the most snow this year ( if it happens) In an average year we would have 15-20 inches by now.

I retired from the Air Force in January of last year and moved to LA in March temporarily with my oldest to start looking for places to live in the West. I went to Bend and looked around and didn't see anything for me, and then on a whim went up to Redmond and found a new house. It's been pretty good so far.

I have a married couple of friends who live in Bend and do triathlons, so I'll start riding and maybe swimming (can't run anymore due to a bad hip). Roberts Field is big enough airport that I don't need to go to Portland, but I've been to Portland once to pick up my household goods. The VA also has a small section in Bend, but if I have to go to Portland I'll be sure to let you know and we can have a beer (or two).

The couple I mentioned earlier just hiked at a spot about 20 minutes north of Redmond and offered to take me there next time. And if I start biking and swimming again I'll be good. I've been to about five beer places in Bend and four in Redmond...a small place in Redmond had a food truck outside, and lo and behold they're from Ohio and are huge Buckeye fans, so that place is going to be a normal stop for me.

Always assumed flying in and out of Redmond would be expensive--still tend to think of that airport as mostly a wildland fire base. Makes sense with the growth--especially with the drive to PDX getting longer every year.

It's a nice, clean small airport, and it has a fair amount of larger flights that leave early (0530-0700) in the morning. I've flown from there twice...the first was on time with no problems, but the second time the airline had issues was the flight and we left an hour late. I'm about 10 minutes from it so it's fine for me.

Cannot imagine the cost of living difference from Hawaii to Redmond.

While I'm sure it is significant for most things you'd still be surprised (at least with housing costs). Portland is one of the most expensive housing markets in the US (avg 500,00). Bend is now over 700,000 (shit, we couldn't afford to move to CO). And it is still fairly isolated. Depending on where you're at in central OR (and weather conditions) you're about 2 hours from an interstate highway.

Grants Pass is what really blew me away with the housing prices. When I was a kid we lived their briefly and it was a nice town but depressed. I passed through there in about 2002 and it was a meth hell hole. Now it has some of the highest rising housing costs in the state. Lots of Cali money from silicone valley now, building luxury homes o prime real estate has priced the locals right out. Terrible homeless problem there now.

It's a huge difference. While Bend--like Portland--is really expensive for houses, Redmond is about 15-20% less despite being only 15 minutes north. Now, Redmond is growing as fast as Bend now, and as a result housing prices are really going up, but it's still not all that bad. Everything else here--compared to Hawaii--is dirt cheap. I paid for my place with the money made from selling my house in Hawaii, and after I pay my income taxes for last year (which is going to be a shit-ton) I'll still have a fair amount of money in the bank. If I didn't go out at all for a month, I could live on $2,000 a month easily. Once the COVID settles down I plan on taking a trip or two to another country each year until I croak.
