How much would you pay to keep Jim Tressel

We know that OSU is contractually bound to negotiate a new contract should Ohio State win a BCS NC before the expiration of the current agreement in 2012. I would suggest that we wait until 6 months after said championship, whenever it occurs, and then look at the increase in Licensing Revenue since Tressel was hired.

That will certainly not be the only way in which Revenue will have increased during Tressel's Tenure; but it seems fair that we allocate a portion of that increase to him (and his assistants, as he sees fit).

This is just another way of saying that I'm ok with making him the highest paid coach with the highest paid staff in college football.

I think you have to pay JT what he wants, which I don't think will be god awful since he is usually pretty reasonable about his contracts.

That being said, I think these college coach contracts are getting out of hand. As we all know, it is being done by schools like Bama and ND who are desperate to turn their programs around.

The problem is, if you pay your coach 4 mil a year, those extra costs are going to trickle down to you and I through ticket costs and merchandise.
I wonder how this is going to affect the entire athletic department budget, including the salaries that can be paid to other coaches for other sports. Football doesn't exist in a vacuum.

It's a slippery slope. What would Gene Smith be showing Thad Matta if the University offered Tressel a 40M/8Y contract? I'd argue that the job Matta inherited was ten times more difficult than what JT walked into. Heck, the University still owes OB millions and it was over three seasons ago that he was the coach.

You look at Miami, Fla. and they've got a huge chunk of change tied up with Larry Coker and Perry Clark, the former they just fired, and the latter they fired back in 2004. Alabama just gave Shula a contract extension before firing him, and Minnesota did the same with Mason, while having to fork over a compensatory "retirement package" to basketball coach Dan Monson after Monson resigned just last month.

I cannot imagine where Alabama is coming up with this coin between all their hired and fired coaches. This contract amounts to an all or nothing title shot that the Tide is committed to through 2014. They cannot fire Saban, they won't be able to afford it.

Signing Nick Saban at Alabama for 8 years 32 mil guarenteed is going to mess up the game of College Football. I think that if Saban is getting 4Mil a year, other top coaches are going to say, "I'm a top ten coach, I should be getting more than Saban is getting." It's going to turn into the NFL now because it's going to be all about the money. It will be a money war.

Saban signing with Alabama will make a huge impact in the money world of CF and can mess up the game a little bit.

As for Tressel, if he wants like 8mil a year, we obviously can't do that. But if he likes where he is and wants to continue to win unlike Nick Saban, he should be humble and happy and ask for an intermediate contract.

I bet they could afford that if that's what it took. Personally I think JT would take something around 3.5M and make sure another 500K is split between his assistants.

I think he should be the highest paid coach in college football. Period. Heck, tOSU will make 4 million in national championship t-shirts sales on Jan. 9th 2007 ALONE!

Along with making JT the highest paid coach in college football, I also think JT should be paid a bonus of 1/4 of his salary each time he beats scUM.

Outside of BP, there is a different conversation going on among the boosters and others who fund the teams they love and the polticians and others who "regulate this gravy train we call college football".

I think these two groups could be seeing eye-to-eye a bit more often in the very near future because of this issue.

I think the conversations in the upper echelons of university leadership are going to go something like this.

Where is the lid on all of this spending? Universities around the US are struggling and laying off good teachers because of financial difficulties. Classroom enhancements are being postponed and other savings are being made, key professors are being lost and student numbers are going down because we are poring money into football? Sure, they earn money but they have fans precisely because they are associated with this Univerisity and get the support of its alumni.

If we call the Buckeyes the Franklinton Falcons tomorrow morning and privatize that business, is it going to have the same earning potential?

Is Jim Tressel worth five or six times more to the University, to Columbus, to Ohio than our top cancer researchers at the James Cancer unit? Is he worth forty times what a good engineering professor earns, when that professor teaches X students and earns the University X dollars?

Regardless of the logic of what college football earns and its value to universities with great teams and traditions, regardless of what we may all think, I believe that the Saban deal will have serious ramifications during the offseason. Logic may not prevail and logic we don't like may prevail.

I think we will see Jim Tressel getting a very good raise but not $4 million. I think his assistants will be much better taken care of. But, he has shown in the past that he will not be greedy and he is smart enough to know that this issue is going to blow up shortly. They'll do what it takes to keep him and he'll do what it takes to stay. And that is precisely why he will one day retire as the most revered coach Ohio State ever had, and I say that with all due respect to the legend in my avatar.

salary

Let's all come down to earth. Tressel is a great coach, but I think salaries have gotten way out of hand (just like CEO salaries). No one is worth that much money. Personally I would like to see a $200K per year salary cap in the NCAA. Tickets to get into the stadium are already way over-priced.

Alabama has an independently funded Athletic Department. All the money comes from Tax exempt donations.

OSU makes a heck of a lot more money with JT as head coach than they did with JC as head coach. This fact distills the sentence I put in bold to a personal statement of values. That's fine as far as they go. But placing limits on wages and prices based on social values has been a massive failure in every version it's ever been tried going all the way back to the Sumerians.

Any type of income cap in any profession will simply drive the talent to a market without one or into another market all together imo. I don't want to see CFB be the domain of the mediocre. We would all look at the "Tress to the Browns" thing in a different light if we could only pay him 200K and they can pay multi millions per year.

One way you could do it is to tie the HC's income to the programs overall profitablity. It still encourages winning and as long as the pay is a proper % of the net, no one can really bitch about his income. That being said, it obviously won't work for 90% of all CFB jobs as they are net losers financially.

Those dumbfucks at Bama have really opened a can of worms, thats for sure.

If money is an issue with Tressel, OSU will never be able to outbid an NFL team for his services. Saban's Alabama contract notwithstanding, the scale of pay for college coaches is much smaller than that for NFL coaches. If an NFL team decides Tressel is their man and starts ponying up cash, they will offer a pay raise, no matter what Tressel happens to be making at OSU. If Tressel stays at OSU despite the inevitable overtures from the NFL, it'll be because he prefers the security of a winning environment and the godlike status he enjoys in town to the challenge of a brand-new system and the money.
