How many wins will RR need next year to keep his job?

How many wins will RR need to have in the 2009 season to keep his job at TSUN?

They just coughed up a lot of duckets in that buyout deal. Unless Bill Martin is shown the door, DickRod ain't goin' anywhere unless he's chased out by a scandal. Bill Martin got drunk in Vegas and married a rotund, toothless hillbilly...now he's probably sobering up and realizing what a horrific mistake he made.

We havent beat him yet. Dont forget OSU looked like shit JT's first year too, and most people probably thought they would beat us pretty easily. I wouldnt dig his grave just yet lol. Not to mention that they paid a shit ton of money to get him, and they wont be willing to pay out like that again any time soon.

Good point, though I don't agree that Ohio State "looked like shit" in 2001. They certainly looked better than Michigan does this year. But no matter how bad Ohio State looked, they beat up on Michigan, AT Michigan, in a game that I seem to remember being not as close as the final score indicated. Even without the investment Michigan has in him, if he wins in Columbus this year, he'd likely have at least through 2010, with 2011 being his first year to truly "shine".

And assuming he doesn't win in Columbus, I don't see them firing him before the 2010 season is done. I also don't see any NFL teams luring him away from Michigan. What NFL teams would try to get a coach who only seems to be able to coach a style that is mostly unsuccessful in the NFL?

Unless some super-rich alum or group of alums steps up and plunks down enough cash to offset the costs associated with bringing in RR.

On another note... I think one of the excuses that RR is going to use to buy himself more time going into next season is that this coming off-season is going to be his first one that he can fully commit to being a head coach. He'll say that having to deal with the WVa lawsuit took precious time away from preparing his team. He won't have that excuse after next year...

scUM got themselves in WAY too deep financially with RR but how much of this will they take? I mean barring some type of miracle this is going to be a bad team next year. Granted you have a QB coming in that is a fit for your offense but he is after all a true freshman, and his initials are not TP, so expecting great things out of him that fast is unreasonable and he won't be surrounded by All Americans to help make his transition easier. And the defense, which was supposed to be the backbone of this years team, will have to be totally reworked with a host of first year players.

I think it also bears considering that even the most conservative scUM followers predicted at the worst a 7 win season for this team. There were people who believed this team would win 9 games this season simply because they had more talent on their roster than that many of their opponents. LJB in a post in the tOSU-MSU thread discussed how talent is more important than coaching, agree with it or not, it points to the fact that this scUM team has either severely played below it's talent level or the roster just isn't as full of talent as people thought, and this current class of freshman has made little or no impact this year. Neither of these scenarios bodes well for a return to importance for a program whose fans continualy trumpet their status as one of the winningest programs in history.

A second consecutive season without a bowl would end the RR era at scUM, no matter what the cost imo.

They have to stick with him to save face (the embarassment of the lawsuit makes them look like stoooopid-fucks if they fire him now), but only to a point. I don't think next year matters, but if they get to year 3 and are noticing some Gerry Faustian tendencies, he's a goner.

I just wonder if they would look at it in the sense that the damage being done in recruiting and the national perception would outweigh the damage to their wallet? Do you save face at any cost?

Here's to hoping this scenario plays out and we are enjoying another torture of a season for scUM at this same time next year.

And for good measure

Eventually, but those goddamned Princeton helmets are enough to grab the attention of a lot of recruits regardless. As far as national perception goes, their consistent losing to us since the era of JT began, bad showings in bowl games (before winning one for the Whiner last year), and loss to Appy by Gawd State already had that on the path. Michigan was lured by the idea of a "modern" offense, and I think that's what they thought would lead them back to national prominence. Thus, they'll give it a try for another year or 3, but they can't afford to go 5-7 2 or 3 tyears in a row.

I wonder (if a poll were taken today) what percentage of Michigan students, alumni, and fans would say they that they wish Lloyd Carr was still the coach.

I think the better question might be how many want to wring his neck for leaving the cupboard so bare. It was great to have all those seniors hang around, but the price is being extracted this year. The loss of Ryan "Big Ego" Mallett plays huge in this too and that can go on RR's ticket.

Agreed, there was certainly some cause for concern before now, but after all this was a team that started 11-0 and was ranked #2 in the country before it shit the bed the last two games of the 2006 season. In just 22 months this team has gone from that to being a team that can't beat a 1 win MAC bottom feeder in their own house. Appy State was a loss of epic proportions but at least they had some talent. For scUM it is "All In" right now because if this change doesn't work and they have to start over again in 2 or 3 years they will find themselves right back in the situation they are in right now. A roster full of players that don't fit the scheme they are trying to run and a multiple year learning curve. This could turn into a vicious circle. Nobody can predict the future but scUM has put themselves in a do or die situation for the foreseeable future.

Is it ironic to anyone else that the situation at TSUN mirrors the downfall of the other scUM in Coral Gables?

One day a National Title contender, the next a National Afterthought.

Doesn't help either that they're getting embarassed by Johnson taking the option to Georgia Tech and winning immediately...yes, it's the ACC, but I imagine GA Tech could beat Utah or Toledo at home.

San Diego Bucks is pretty much dead on. No, OSU hasn't beaten Meatchicken yet, and if we'll all recall, Meatchicken has upset OSU when we were more highly ranked MANY more times than the reverse. Plus, a win against OSU would 'make it all better' for DickRod. Yeah, they'll be highly motivated, so it'll make the win more sweet when OSU throws the 'spread' offense in the face of the Spread Offense Master (DickRod). But Meatchicken would like nothing better than to knock us out of the BCS with a win to 'salvage' their season.....and no matter if they're Oh-for-the season, a win would salvage it for them (as it would for OSU if the positions were reversed).

The Michigan AD and crew are another story. It was their hire, and they will lose a tremendous amount of 'face' if it's one or two years and then a buy-out. I already hear the alibis (Les Miles wouldn't come, neither would Sciano, DickRod was our 5th choice.....). Heck, if one will remember, OSU couldn't entice Stoops (Bob) to leave Oklahoma, nor Bellagio (oregon coach), etc. so OSU 'settled' on Tressel...(never coached D-I before, so how can he play with the 'big boys'?)......you rolls the dice, you takes your chances.

Political pressure says DickRod gets at LEAST two more years. If he recruits less than a stellar class in the third year (last year was one, this year is two, so next year) then he's on the way out. But Michigan is still one of the premier programs in the land, so athletes know they'll get someone good.....eventually.
