I've actually devoted a fair amount of thought towards this subject this year. In the past, my weed control strategy has been three-prong. I use the 'weed wacker' on the lawn edging and on the weeds growing along the fence in our back alley. Then, I'd occassionally spray Roundup(tm) in sidewalk cracks and other large weed infested areas to control them. Finally, we'd pull the weeds coming up in the lawn by hand.
Last summer, I became so frustrated with the bindweed in our lawn, that I bought something called Weed Free Zone, a broadleaf killer that can be applied in the lawn. Well, I didn't do my homework before I bought it, so I did some research about it once I had it at home and before I applied it. Well after reading about it, I decided that I didn't want to apply that chemical to our lawn, especially since our dog has an affinity for eating grass. So, at that point I decided to go POISON FREE in our yard. I have stopped using weed killer, 'weed and feed' and inorganic fertilzers. My turf strategy now is to nurture a healthy, thick turf using organic means and pulling weeds by hand every few weeks. In the gardens, we have put landscape fabric down and have to rarely pull weeds along the margins. And for the back alley, I still use the weed wacker.
