So, do all the homeless dudes there wear cheerleader outfits?

When your homeless, you can't be choosey about your attire!
Besides, it's all about getting your picture on Facebook with some hot co-eds! :pimp:
It's the "Homeless Rep Ring".

I think it's a bit degrading to these homeless folks. It wouldn't have been a very good publicity stunt if it wasn't.

The $20 plus panhandling is what does it for me. Treat them with some dignity - pay them like you would any other temp employee and don't allow them to panhandle while they're on the clock.

I could do without SXSW entirely. It's like Davos for hipsters. A bunch of hot air, a place to see and be seen. I'm sort of a hipster in my own right but I want no part of that stuff. I'm sure there's some great music emerging there, but it wouldn't be worth spending time in the midst of a giant circle jerk to find it.

+1.

You want a good festival to go to... Go to Bonaroo. Great established bands, great up-and-coming bands, great festival.

I'm not much of a festival person, but that's probably the best one all-around from what I can tell

I very much prefer small theater concerts. Better sightlines, better acoustics, cheaper tickets and fewer dickheads.

I'm not either. Went to Lollapalooza in 2003 and that's about it. Always have wanted to experience Bonaroo though.

Agree with you there... As far as the homeless guy in the pictures earlier.. That's Leslie, an Austin Icon who passed away a few days ago... I still remember my friends getting a picture with him when he was parading down 6th Street in a thong..

SXSW has changed a lot in the years since I've been down here... its become much more elitist, You have to pay $$$$ for a Badge to be the first ones in, you pay $$$ for a wristband which will get you in after all the badged people, then they sell tickets on top of that.... that being said the music part of the "festival" is for ADD folks, each band plays about an hour or less and goes on from 8 til 1am... in all sorts of venues saw a bunch of no name bands last year play in a church, was really cool venue to see a band.

the interactive and film portions are pretty neat as well. its definitely an event that's not for everyone...I could do without the traffic, but i'll take all the revenue coming in from it.

These are people who otherwise weren't going to get shit. Do you raise a fuss about treating minimum wage earners "with dignity"? Look at the reaction of the homeless folks who had the hotspot jobs...not one complained and were in fact happy about it. It gave them essentially an honest day's work, gave them some earned money and some food in their stomach, along with a chance to show "normal" folks that they weren't as bad as many thought. A "win-win" in my mind.

I do in fact raise a fuss about treating minimum wage workers with dignity. That's a different conversation though.

It simply wasn't an honest day's work. They didn't pay even minimum wage and they encouraged them to continue panhandling. They didn't hire them to work, they hired them to be homeless. Again, if they had been hired for any other reason it wouldn't have been a very good stunt.

I can see where some people might say that if they wanted dignity rather than money they could have turned the gig down. A real win-win doesn't make them choose between the two. If they had been treated like anybody else from the regular workforce, if even for a day, they could have chosen to have both.

They weren't panhandling per se but getting donations for the WiFi they were providing. Their getting only $20 a day but in turn getting to keep all the donations is like waitresses getting minimum wage but getting tips.

Servers usually don't make "minimum wage" due to the fact they are tipped personnel.

http://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm#Texas

Going rate for what the homeless were doing, since they were allowed to keep the donations as tips, would be $2.13 an hour.

So, $20 would be payment for almost 9 1/2 hours of work for the day.

I see nothing wrong with giving the homeless an opportunity at a job like this since they would most likely be turned away from any serving position which would pay the same due to the fact they have no permanent address.

Also, none of this is being taxed right now, so the homeless are faring better than servers (until the IRS comes after them next year for unpaid taxes since they like to prey on the poor and middle class and leave the rich alone).

Its a circle jerk of the progressive blogosphere. Politically, musically, and socially.

These are the people who laugh in your face when you haven't heard of a specific obscure band, turn up their nose when you offer to buy them a Bud Light, scoff at the notion of drinking Starbucks brand coffee, whisper quietly when you aren't dressed like them and mindlessly throwing money at anything holistic. All while on their $400 iPhones, natch.

Its thousands of non-conformists behaving in exactly the same way.

Wow. I listen to obscure music, have friends who are playing there this year, never turn my nose up at a beer, drink Starbucks but prefer DD, could care less what people wear and only buy something holistic if it tastes / looks good... All while on my $400 iPhone. So, there you go. Got the iPhone part right.

You may not like the culture, but you are far from having us pegged.
