Home Repairs/HoneyDo List/Advice & Tips/etc.

Q: Need recommendations for a good degreaser/detail polish to get grease & oil prints off a car. Had to have my car serviced over the weekend (water pump, timing belt) and since it was completely dead on the back of a tow truck, I've got greasy palm prints all over the trunk where it was pushed into the service bay, and palm and finger prints all over the hood and both front fender panels. Car is white, so the hand prints are pretty obvious.

Took it through the car wash last night after pickup from the mechanic and the power wash/soap/foam brush didn't do a thing. Spent another half hour at home scrubbing with my detail brush and Turtle Wax and that didn't do much of anything either. Obviously need some sort of chemical degreaser.

I hate it when a mechanic is that careless. What does that say about his work?
Your car probably needed waxed and that made the grease stick easier. Now, you have to work harder to get it clean again.
Try some" Bug and TarRemove"r or a Meguir's product.
Be sure to get a good wax on it when you're done cleaning the grease off.

I am having some problems with the outside doors latching (front and garage) of the house we bought in August. We didn't have any issues with them up until the weather turned cold over the last month or so. I'm assuming that it has to do with the house contracting in the winter. Anyone have this issue before and have any suggestions on how to fix it? I probably can adjust the latch plate, but that might be a pain.

Is the door noticeably catching anywhere? Steel, fiberglass or wood? New house, or older house? I've found that the weatherstripping or seal around the door hardens up and is harder to compress in the cold weather. Sometimes this 1/8" can make a difference. Maybe see if another person can push from the outside while you're seeing if it latches.

Exterior doors also have a threshold that can be adjusted up or down.

Check the hinges too. I recently found an interior door hard to close on a house we purchased. Prior owner or some moron he hired had used a round head screw to replace one of the screws on the door hinge. Hinge was hitting screwhead and binding. Duh! Hope you find a similar, easy to fix, problem with yours!

Strike plates are not always a pain. Many have a small metal piece that goes back into the doorjamb. You can bend that piece with a flat head screwdriver without even taking it off to give it more or less room.

Good luck!

Check the distance between the door and the weatherstripping at both the top and bottom of the door. We have straightening bars on the patio doors of our three season room because they warp severely in cold weather.

Today I took apart our washing machine and bypassed the broken lid switch with a wire jumper in the 3-pin molex connector attached to the control board. Ten minutes before that I didn't know how to take the washer apart or what any of the parts were named, which left me wondering ... How in the hell did people fix broken things before the invention of YouTube?

And yes, I know the jumper is a safety/electrical risk. It's temporary for tonight until I get the replacement lid switch from Sears.

For our anniversary my wife gave me a home depot gift card. I'm thinking of either putting it towards a bench saw or a compound miter saw. Any suggestions as to which one to get first? I'm leaning towards bench saw.
Happy anniversary. Both are great Craigslist items, as Johnny Homeowner drops $$$ and rarely uses them. But, if I had to choose I'd go fr the miter saw, I love mine. Spend your money and get a nice blade, too.

I've needed both of them. Probably used the bench more, but I've had it longer and my buddy let me borrow his miter saw when I finished my basement. Might want to check Harbor Freight as well. If you are only going to use them occasionally you might as well pay as little as possible.

Wife and I came to the realization that it's time to start working toward moving to the other side of town since it feels we're on an island on the east side. That means the first half of this year is really going to suck for me. I have to fix or hide everything that isn't up to code from when I finished my basement and I'll also need to rip out the crappy pink carpet in the dining room along with the Pergo in the kitchen and redo it all with new laminate. We also have a ton to do to improve the curb appeal since I've never really given a shit about the outside. Be nice to get it all done by the time schools out and see if we can move in with the in-laws while we try to sell it. Really need to figure out the legality of dumping my bar sink into the sump pump. Probably not going to end well for my wallet.

My lab just got done benchmarking some of the major LVT players out there. If/when you get to the point of purchase, feel free to look me up on that. Granted, you're just looking to put something in place for a sell, but I thought I'd offer nonetheless.

For this one it would just be something that looks good long enough to sell, but I'll hit you up if we need to look for something once we find a new place.
